Amos Cripe and a neighbor were struck by shotgun pellets when a loaded gun, brought by Frank Priser’s family, discharged in a kitchen during a Saturday visit near Uroshen. The load grazed both men’s arms and touched Cripe’s cheek. minor injuries were reported.
The Imperial Manufacturing Co of Elkhart earned a silver medal in liberal arts. The L'gonier Fire Brick Co captured a silver in mining and retailing. The Lakon Co of Elkhart won a bronze in electricity and River Chilled Plow Co of South Bend a gold in agriculture. Indiana led eight of eighteen groups, earning medals and honorable mentions.
Harvey Schrock of Clinton Township believed his pocketbook and money were stolen but an investigation showed he had placed the items in a small hand satchel for safekeeping. The satchel was later found with the contents intact.
In the Indiana conference at Fairmount the Wesleyan Methodists assigned Rev S. Vanblarhorn to Ligonier and Rev H. T. Hawkins to Albion.
The Milford ball team meets Tonawandas at Red Men’s grounds this afternoon at 3:30. A large crowd is expected as Milford shows strong form and heavy practice ahead of a likely eventful match.
The post office em pires and the court house Rats played at Tonawands grounds. The game started at 1 o clock and the Rats won 11 to 6 behind a strong offense before a fair sized crowd.
Friday afternoon the Sturgis ball team plays South Pend Greens at Red Men’s grounds in this city. Both teams are strong and an interesting contest is expected.
Saturday evening at the Regulation alleys the All Stars defeated South Bend in the three games. The room was crowded to the doors as spectators packed the venue for the bowling match.
Atvodlock Sunday morning a disturbance at Mrs Mary Shea’s North Side triggered police. Pat Shea calmed and paid a fine to avoid jail. Col Geo M Studebaker’s famed Tigers regiment holds its first annual reunion at Bluffton with camp named after the colonel. Competition for the next reunion draws interest from Columbia City Marion and Lafayette.
Republicans of Middlebury Township announce nominees for township offices including Ira A Elliot for trustee, J. Fivgkrel as assessor, Jn Ve Mather and V. D. Smith for justices of the peace, Sol McNary and M. A. Page for constables, and M. A. Stu z for advisory board.
Sears Gardner of this city pursues a replevin suit with C D Sherwin acting for Gardner before Justice Redfield in Bass County Michigan. The trial ended with a jury disagreement.
Labor Day passes with routine events as Goshen reports no unusual happenings. South Bend union clerks participate in the celebration with a promised large BUCCEES event.
Dr. F D Claire became the first Goshen man to wear a shirt waist, and he eagerly awaited others to follow. The style appeared late in the season as a fashion fad.
Co C reports very small attendance for the Tiger regiment reunion at Fort Wayne this week. E W Doty, once a local music dealer, has become a traveling salesman for the Chickering Piano Mfg Company, with substantial experience in the field.
Over 20 000 excursionists spent Sunday in St Joe. During the day 102 marriage ceremonies were performed with most couples from Chicago. The council meets in regular session tonight to discuss the pump purchase and the abode tree and removal ordinances.
Sheriff returns from Baltimore with no trace on Harry Waters. Emil Opperman, 17, arrested on complaint by Klumborg & Tobias for stealing 11 sheep pelts valued at $10. Pelts traced to Dembufsky junk shop. Opperman bound over to circuit court, bond $50, jailed for lack of bail. Reports say Waters may be abroad. authorities watch coastal ports and ships.
Dr Thomas Montgomery a colored physician of Elkhart is jailed on an affidavit from Mrs Hardraph Milwaukee accusing him of abortion on her sister Mrs Brimmingstool last May. Brimmingstool and her husband run his office and rumor says he sought to refer the case to evade licensing penalties. Hearing set in City Judge Blake s court this afternoon.
At about 11 this morning the child of Mr and Mrs W E Misten on South Third Street ate poison from a fig paper. Dr J A Snapp arrived to find the baby in critical condition but a later report notes slight improvement. The mother was away when the poisoning occurred.
Elkhart attorney Henry C. Dodge announced he will seek the judge’s seat as an independent by petition. Dodge, who ran for the Republican nomination at Shipshewana, claims broad anti ring support and will draw votes from Republicans discontent with Mer Ferrall. He noted former ally J. D. Ferrall helped secure the nomination for Ferrall, prompting Dodge’s break.
Shoup and Kohler run on School Suite while C G Adams & Sons close out Ladies and Gents wear at cost. J H Jacobs offers second hand goods at moving prices. The Chicago Fair offers bargains on clothing and shoes. Goshen Fuel fills coal orders for winter as Herr & Co supply school books. Siver Bros move to new room with upcoming surprises. Beeson's headache wafers gain popularity. News Book Store targets school trade with low prices and large assortment. Newell Bros advertise broad bargains. Economy store features Rainy Way skirt sale with a $6 skirt listed at 498. Prof H E Zimmerman recommends Turkish baths for pore cleansing.
Mrs Mary Wolfe aged 42 died yesterday at her parents home after a long illness. She leaves two daughters a son four brothers and one sister. Funeral Wednesday at 9 am with service at the residence and Mennonite church Clinton township then interment at Mennonite cemetery. Cook aged 77 died yesterday at his companion home after brief cholera morbus illness. A native of England he was a Goshen stock buyer and Civil War veteran in Howell Post 90. Services at St James Episcopal church Tuesday at 3 pm under the auspices of the post with burial at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The Big Four ran four excursions to Benton Harbor with crowded cars and large crowds. The Wa bash special carried Goshen people and trains passed through Marion Muncie Greensburg and Anderson. Many peaches were bought at Benton Harbor and St. Joe and taken home free. The Sunday excursion business this season exceeds all prior years. Wawasee also sent Goshen visitors as usual.
A drunken man insulted a boy in Chicago Saturday night and robbed him of his supplies, then tossed them into the street. The offender should have been arrested and fined. Jos H. Lesh sent home his horses Carey C and Cobbett from Champaign Illinois. Carey C is lame and Cobbett unfit to race. They may race later at Terre Haute and Fort Wayne.
The insane man identified as Or. Wallace who believes he is a revenue officer will receive a hearing in Indianapolis today. It is anticipated he will be released without a recommendation for asylum. A band played at Springbrook Park last night. epee.
Health board moves to stamp out diphtheria while a 75 year old Michigan City woman dies of heart disease after a fall. Plymouth man Julius Bluebaugh killed by a train near Jonesboro, and Elyth Shock dies by self inflicted gunshot. Other items cover a church convention, farm fire losses, jail escape attempt, real estate transfers, a baseball win by Greens over Sturgis, and community notices in the South Bend region.
