County officials work on the 184 requisition with old issues of form and system delaying a year budget. The county council plans to act next week as officers file estimates and the fall court term approaches. Minor incidents include a police alarm on West Lincoln and guardian appointments for minor heirs.
The Farmers' and Merchants' Fall Festival executive committee arranged use of electric lighting along a South Bend route from Clinton Street to Main and Lincoln avenues, using incandescent lamps of various colors to decorate four blocks. Extra efforts aim to ensure a successful illumination for the festival.
Mrs Henry Stamets hosts a euchre party at South Sixth Street on shoreday evening. Mrs Charles K. Gorham plans a six o clock dinner at Mouth Fifth Street. Mrs George M Richardson hosts a thimble party next Friday afternoon on Soull Seventh Street. The Lanes of First English Lutheran plan Wednesday afternoon at Mrs J Brookmeyer on Sixth Street. County superintendent H E Gillham reports peppermint cultivation yielding 355 dollars from 316 acres with 160 dollars cost, distiller John Adeline operates near Hobbs Marsh with 42 acres, and farmer John Smith has ten acres. Pomace fed to cattle, and ginseng cultivation starts with good results. Philip Nye near the city is Elkhart county’s largest peppermint raiser.

Rachael Rensberger widow of William Rensberger died at her home five miles southeast of New Paris at 2 pm from cancer. Born York County Pennsylvania November 5 1941 she leaves three sons six daughters one sister two brothers and thirteen grandchildren. Funeral at German Baptist church southeast of New Paris Thursday forenoon with friends at her late home 9 am. Interment Baintertown cemetery. Samuel Nihart aged about 74 died Monday at Mrs John Myers home Middlebury after old age illness. He was a bachelor with heart and lung trouble. Survived by four sisters and two brothers. An uncle of Mrs Melvin Wright and Mrs Bert Smith of Goshen. Funeral Wednesday 1 pm Myers home Middlebury. Interment Cornell cemetery.
Big Four engine 154 derailed at 5 am behind Goshen Churn Ladder Co plant due to a broken rail. No crew injuries. Passenger train due 9:28 am arrived about 25 minutes late after being run over Lake Shore from Elkhart. wrecking crew cleared track by 11 am. Local notices and property deals follow.
About 200 guests at the Whansetler family reunion near Swan, Noble county, fell ill after eating chicken kept in tin pans. Doctors diagnosed poisoning, possibly from tin or brass contact, with J. S. Simon, S. C. Simon, and Frank M. Smiley among the ill. Some visitors from Ohio were affected and Mrs. Myers of near Huntington was unconscious for a day.
Official two day program for the Four Generations Reunion Association gathering in Millersburg September 10 and 11. Activities include a basket picnic on the school campus with a morning program, welcome address by W. B. Barnard, and evening band concerts and a fire brigade run. The second day features visiting, storytelling, a grand barbecue, and an afternoon of toasts and speeches.
Elkhart City Attorney Wanfleet sues Indiana Railway Co for failure to provide suitable tenders per city ordinance. Papers not yet served. Also, Robert Bucklen’s remains arrive from Chicago for services at O C Hill home.
In South Bend Judge Feldman sentences Ignatz Bednarwach for wife beating. He cites lack of family support but expresses harsh alternative punishment if power allowed. Bednarwach allegedly treated his wife shamefully. she refused to prosecute.
The digging apparatus for the well at the water station is now in working order. The outer wall is completed and sinking will begin soon. Within another month the well will be completed and connections made as citizens await the shut off of the Rock Run water supply.
Mr E J England resumes charge of the stob rooms in Goshen after years away in Laporte with the Argus Bulletin and Kokomo with the News. He has many warm friends in Goshen who will welcome his return to the city. Short season ends with poor profits for resort keepers as temperatures cool and attractions wane.
The fourth annual reunion of the Christian Mehl family is held today at Cotton Lake near Shipshewana. Dr M Farber and Myre A Hostettler of Middlebury are president and secretary. A C Mehl and family attend. Duck shooting opens Sept 1 with license required Oct to Nov 10 for all game. law applies beyond ducks. North state marshes full of young ducks.
Leonard Rodibaugh sold his 206 acre Kosciusko County farm to Bel Mier of Ligonier for 15000 dollars. The deal was arranged through Deah Deahl. L M Bart of Kalamazoo, an expert stenographer, joined F Dela Claire Co. A lodging offer at 405 North 7th Street costs 3 50 weekly. Freeh pig sausage offered at Simmons.
The city will open on September 7 with primary grades admitting children aged 6 or turning 6 by April 1, 1904. No primary admits at the start of the second term. High school pupils should report for classification this Friday and Saturday. superintendent available daily this week. teachers’ meeting Saturday at 10 am in room 10, high school building. By order of the Board, Sylvester Czurkiewicz, 16, an engraver’s apprentice from South Bend, was killed at Laporte while attempting to board a Lake Shore freight train after visiting Pine Lake. he left home with a neighbor boy without parents’ knowledge. the other boy was uninjured. Now located in Mishawaka. Dr. Anna Barron today took over Dr. F. H. Irwin’s dental office after purchasing the business. she has 14 years’ experience in Goshen, Fort Wayne, and Michigan, and has made several friends here. Twenty Belgian hares owned by Frank Bangay were killed Sunday night. Bangay is active in breeding. John Winter of Goshen Eyelet Co. purchased the Peter Conrad residence at 212 East Jefferson Street for $8,000.
