Two Excellent Speeches by Good Orators

The Democratic campaign kicked off at the Jefferson theatre with Theo dore A. Bell of California and Frank E. Hering of South Bend, drawing a full house as they argued live issues before B. F. Deahl. Bell impressed with clear diction and calm style, praising Bryan while attacking trusts, tariff questions, bank deposits guarantees, and direct senatorial elections. Hering, preserving audience goodwill, linked issues to the Bryan ticket and, with sharp attacks on Republican ties to big finance, highlighted campaign contributions and the Roosevelt era’s political entanglements.
