Washington May 31 The senate finance committee considers a war tax bill to raise 80 million dollars by taxing consumers. Coffee two cents per pound tea per pound cocoa and sugar 14 cents per pound cocoa cent per pound and related changes. It also ends the 12 per cent tax on war munitions aimed at 25 million dollars.
Streetcar strike at South Bend prompts additional interurban cars to Goshen with more student conductors and motormen employed for service between the points.
Reverend and Mrs. C. L. McKay formerly of Nappanee escaped injury in the Mattoon cyclone. Mrs. McKay is the daughter of Frank Coppes of Nappanee.
Washington May 31 navy officers mourn the death of Rear Admiral John Henry Upshur 94 oldest living naval academy graduate and longest living flag officer of the United States Navy He served 54 years active 29 retired and fought in two wars Born John Henry Nottingham in 1823 in Northampton County Virginia he adopted the Upshur name at 16 and was related to Abel Parker Upshur secretary of the navy.
London reports May casualties for British forces are very heavy due to sustained fighting on the Arras front. Official May losses total 112,283 with 106,351 officers and men, while February casualties were 18,428. March and April figures are unavailable. claims of 50 percent fewer losses than the Somme are not fully supported.
Earthquake tremors were recorded on the seismograph at Georgetown University in Georgetown Washington this morning. They began at 3 57 AM and peaked at 4 20 AM before ceasing at six, with experts estimating the distance at 4000 miles.
Vienna dispatch reports Dr Gustav Gross leader of the German National league has been chosen president of the lower house of the Australian parliament. In addressing the body he stated the aim to continue the war as forced upon them.
In Washington the Italian mission head Prince Udine delivered a message from King Victor Emmanuel to the U.S. government. He appeared in an elaborate uniform and received an enthusiastic reception. Wilson Hendricks a Grand Rapids resident is held on a $1000 bond in Elkhart on a charge of surety of the peace after a police chase and growing insanity. William N. Culbertson formerly of Grand Island Nebraska had his will probated in the Goshen circuit court this morning. Richard L. Powell of Goshen qualified as administrator with will annexed by filing a 3000 dollar bond signed by Fima M. Lamb and Charles W. Lamb. The estate valued at 3000 to 4000 dollars includes a life interest to widow Mary Jane Culbertson with remainder to six children Eyama May Lamb Mary Fragzell Cora Belle Frazell Frank W. Culbertson Harry W. Culbertson and John Edgar Culbertson. Depositions of witnesses caused delay. Harry W. Culbertson resides in Utah City and did not qualify. The will was executed November 9 1906 and witnessed by Howard H. Garrett and R. R. North.

William Grandeville and William Home, both Negroes, were brought from Elkhart to serve 15 days for riding on bumpers of a northbound freight train. W. E. The Mutual Investment Credit Union of the Postal Telegraph Co announces through president Edward Reynolds that it will arrange to purchase Liberty Bonds for the employer of the company. Purchasers will receive payments from date received at 3 44 percent per annum with no charges for money advanced. The plan yields 7 percent to buyers and many bonds have been subscribed.
Mrs George L Parks and her 17 year old son Lawrence from Knox were admitted to Longcliff asylum alongside other patients. The son suffered mental decline after a severe measles illness, and worry over his condition precipitated the mother's mental breakdown.

Noble Kreider and Dwight Yoder enlisted for service in France with the ambulance corps and took oaths last evening in Chicago. They will return home to remain subject to call and are expected to sail for France within two weeks.

After marriage they will reside in Denver. Prohibitive prices force H. M. Rink to discontinue fresh meat retail at his Millersburg market. He will sell only smoked meats going forward.
Albert Russ, 18, of Elkhart, was fined $11 for smoking cigarettes. Local authorities cited underage smoking and issued the penalty to the young man.
George Broadhurst’s farce What Happened to Jones was staged by the 1917 Goshen High School graduating class at the Jefferson Theatre and Irwin Opera House. The cast featured Walter B. Kester and Ruth Jacobs with a large, amused audience. Total receipts neared $615 with $200 donated to Goshen Red Cross and $100 to the Crimson.
