Miss Effie Witmer age 59 a long time city schoolteacher died at Goshen hospital at 6 80 this morning from complications. She taught English at Emma R Chandler and South Fifth Street schools and had planned retirement under the new pension law. Survived by her mother and sister Ida Stutsman of Long Beach Cal with a nephew. funeral arrangements to be announced.
The annual Redpath chautauqua will be held at Rogers Band Park rather than the Emma R. Chandler school lot. Past years saw events at the school after tenting at the band park in 1912 and 1915. The park is offered free this year, with historical rents and ticket values noted for 1913 and 1914.
Mortuary record notes Benjamin R. Myers aged 56 died at his Elkhart home from heart disease. Survived by his third wife, three sons, one daughter and one sister of Goshen. Rebecca Axtell, who died recently in Elkhart, was once married to Myers.
Theodore Roosevelt former president and William J. Bryan three time presidential nominee will be heard at Winona assembly this summer with David Marshall as vice president. Marshall’s date is Monday June 3.
The S. S. Saxon Co. holding the contract for paving South Seventh street has imported a number of Negro laborers for construction. They are housed at the Eugene Davis house on North Seventh street. Laborers are in demand and wages are reported as good.
Final examinations will be held in city schools next week during the last week of the school year. Exemption applies to all high school students with a grade of 85 or better. St. John's Catholic school will not close until mid June.

College comedy performed before a large audience last night by the G H S class of 1916. The play titled A Trial of Hearts proved unusually competent with gross receipts around seven hundred dollars and a net profit considerably above the usual.

A capacity Jefferson theater crowd watched Goshen High School 1916 class present the four act college comedy A Trial of Hearts. The will of Allen J. Wallace who died at his Harrison Township home May 16, 1916 was probated in the circuit court this morning. It provides a monument to Wallace and life interest in realty to Eva J. Wallace, with remainder to daughter Mable Wallace. widow remarrying triggers a $500 allowed by law and half the property. Several court actions and probate orders followed, including dismissals, divorces, and guardianships, all noting estate reporting requirements.
Water will be shut off unless it rains, Thursday morning. The outage affects Third Street from Washington to Monroe, Madison, and Jefferson streets from Third Street to the canal, and continues all day on Thursday.

Nathan Fristoe 16 Everett Copenhaver 17 and Joe Mongold 15 of Nappanee were arrested in Fort Wayne for carrying concealed weapons. Fristoe and Copenhaver held on 100 bond each for city court hearing Saturday. Mongold certified to the juvenile court. The trio rode into Fort Wayne by freight train after declaring they sought opportunity and fortune.
A good day at the U B Sabbath school with Mothers Day Fathers Day and Visitors Day. One hundred two scholars attended and visitors numbered about the same. The church was decorated with flowers and white festooning. A fine program and singing was enjoyed led by Rev Bears. Miss Josephine B Banta of Benton and Miss Laura Ott formerly of this place now of Richville sang solos. Souvenirs were given to all present.
More than 1100 actors are needed for a Fort Wayne pageant at the Indiana Centennial celebration. Opening day parade is set for Tuesday with a 2x fraternal display. Taft and Gov. Ralston will be guests of honor as the Fort Wayne Industrial Exposition runs June 5-10. Northern Indiana is expected to supply strong representation.
At the regular meeting of the common council to be held Monday night June 3 a member of the school board to succeed Leonard J Brooks progressive August 1 will be elected Milgon A Wysong retires August 1 1917 and Sol Dembufsky term lasts until August 1 1918 both are democrats Brooks willing to accept another term
The Ladies Aid society of the First Reformed church elected officers: Pres. Mrs. Frank Crowell, first vice-president Mrs. W. R. Wilt, second vice-president Mrs. M. Bradford, secretary Mrs. D. A. Zartman, treasurer Mrs. C. L. Landgraver. Mrs. Anna Hope was elected honorary president for life.
