Allied lines report renewed skirmishes from Mesnil to Hebuterne with heavy German losses as British patrols seize prisoners and machine guns in raids around Arras Locon Nieppe and Ypres Comines canal. German front redeployment noted as heavy in rear areas.
A tornado struck Lone Rock Wisconsin 44 miles west of Madison killing five people and injuring about 30. The northern part of the town was swept away and debris scattered over two square miles. Victims were found up to a mile from their homes.
Washington May 23 The navy department received an addition to the Cyclops crew list, with 13 D3 men transferred from other ships. The announcement says these passengers were likely aboard the Cyclops on its last voyage.
German naval authorities plan to abandon Zee Brugge and Ostend as U-boat bases due to British blockades and persistent bombing. Separate dispatch from Paris notes a Russian unit fighting with a Moroccan division on the French front has cited for bravery and leader Captain Loupanov named a chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Rostovan soldiers awarded war crosses.

The navy announced that the American tanker Willing Rockefeller was torpedoed in European waters on May 18. One engineer officer and two engineers were killed. three men were last known to be missing, with offi cers reported uninjured.
In a May 2 letter to Senate Military Affairs committees, Charles Evans Hughes urges that the Justice Department investigation not be tainted by a parallel inquiry by the committee. He notes the president’s wishes and suggests the committee may waive its right to continue and allow Hughes to conduct the probe as he sees fit.
The Iowa Synod orders Lutherans to join all patriotic meetings and use English in church and Sunday school instruction or withdraw. Ministers are to chair patriotic meetings when requested and to promote patriotism through English language use at such events.
The American forces report 48 casualties from May 23 in France including three killed, two died of wounds, two of disease, 38 severely wounded and three slightly. An American patrol northwest of Toul cut a high tension cable used for enemy wire charges and engaged German patrols near Ancervillers and Luneville with several prisoners taken.
A wartime notice from Washington reports calls to speed ship construction for a July 4 launch day. Commissioner Colby and Director General Charles Schwab promise nine ships from San Francisco as other yards race to complete vessels despite constraints.
Lake Charles Louisiana May 28 two pilots Lieuts Lathin Polk from New York City and Spencer Charles Williams of Buffalo died when two airplanes collided at eight thousand feet over Gerstner field. Announcement said.
In Madrid May 238 a German submarine interned at Ferrol attempted to break out but was halted by a Spanish destroyer. The incident underscores tense naval control in the region.
