Judge Dodge ordered a grand jury to meet next Monday to examine the killing of Erastus Paul in New Paris. The coroner has completed inquest work but filed no verdict. Mrs. Fletcher testified she knew nothing of the case. Harry Toms remains under scrutiny with possible bail or trial next week.
First Church of Christ Scientist of this city moved yesterday to the second floor of The Democrat building for a combined reading room and church. The auditorium seats 150 and can expand for larger crowds. reading rooms operate daily 3 to 5 p m except Sunday. The church, organized 18 years ago with eleven members, now has about seventy in the congregation. S W Kline and Mrs Norris Brown serve as readers. Cora Bartlemay and Mate C Thompson have also read. Lectures are held annually.
E. D. Salsbury for petitioners emailed to Supreme Court judges extra authorities bearing on last Friday’s arguments. The filing closes the case for the lawyers. the decision is awaited with interest.
On Tuesday evening Calanthe lodge starts a class titled Indiana Pythian Building Dedicatory Page Rank Class. Grand Chancellor Jonce Monahan of Orleans and Past Grand Chancellor Frank J. Dunton of Lagrange will attend. A Calanthe smoker will follow.
About 30 tickets sold at Lake Shore station for G A R members traveling to Fort Wayne for the state encampment. Others preferred the Wabash line via Warsaw. Inclement weather kept many Goshen residents at home despite fair attendance.
South Bend residents who toured the Jamestown Exposition in Norfolk Virginia criticized the fair for its unfinished condition and said they did not find sufficient interest to leave their carriages while traversing the grounds.
The Kalamazoo Gazette won a mandamus action to compel the county clerk to disclose a marriage license record to Gazette reporters. The ruling forces access to public marriage data in a case highlighting press access to vital records.
A son was born this morning to Mr Alfred Kizer of Kas Goghen.
The Western Construction company will lay asphalt pavement on Sixth street from Lincoln avenue to Purl street and guarantee the work for ten years. The firm must keep the pavement in satisfactory repair during the guarantee period.
Gene P. F. Carney, manager of the Star moving picture theatre in South Bend, reportedly left Sunday after sending his wife and three children away. About $350 of the owning company is missing. QO. H. Runyan of Grand Rapids takes charge of the Star.
The act features three child performers among the Four Andersons with two girls and a boy. The children sing well and receive encores while the boy adds comedy. The performance is praised as one of the Irwin’s best in a long time.
On Friday evening two Elk youths will perform a second show as a tryout. They prefer to have their names withheld and hope the appearance secures engagement on the circuit.
Dr Maurice Francis Egan a professor of English language and literature at the Catholic University in Washington is expected to be offered the Denmark mission. He previously lived in South Bend where he held the chair of English at Notre Dame.
Miller last night spoke to the Wayne street BH church men’s club in Fort Wayne on Our Duty and also addressed Indiana University’s law department at Bloomington.
J H Hellekson the state agent for Springfield Insurance is in the city today to adjust the fire loss at the Western Rubber Co plant.
The T and C company has 40 men at work on its interurban line out of Koendallville. Car barns are being built there.
The Milford White Sox and the Go shen Greys will play a baseball game tomorrow at Tonawanda Park.
Fisher's Worlds Fair Orchestra of Kalamazoo Michigan has been engaged to perform at the Alumnine dance event in town.
Construction on the Chicago, Lake Shore & South Bend Electric Railway advances with tracks laid in St. Joseph county and a Michigan City power house nearing completion. Poles are being installed in Porter county and cars are scheduled to run into South Bend by September 14. The Westinghouse single phase AC system will power the line with three 3,000 HP turbines and three generators, and capital stock is now $6,000,000. The S B & N I Co may extend to La Porte instead of Michigan City.
Deputy fish and game commissioner John H. Rigney walked into justice court at Lagrange and left after arraignment. On May 11, Rigney and other deputies arrested William B. Rowe Roscoe Funk Henry Misner and Frank Miller for spearing bass at Basslake Clearspring township. Cases dismissed by the prosecutor but charges filed in circuit court after Rigney affidavit. defendants re-arrested and posted 50 dollars bond each for September term appearance.
Funeral services were held for Clarence Benedict sixteen year old son of Mr and Mrs Timo thy Benedict of Cassopolis Michigan after he was killed instantly in his father's mill three miles west of town. He was adjusting a belt when his clothing became entangled and he was hurled around a line shaft about 300 revolutions before the machine stopped. His arms and neck were broken and both feet were severed below the knees as the body struck the building wall with each turn of the shaft.
The state's first sanitation inspection tabulation shows dairies drug stores groceries meat markets slaughter houses hotels restaurants bakeries and confectioneries in fair condition since the new food and general sanitation law took effect.
Alonzo D Williamson aged 54 died in a Minneapolis hospital from internal injuries received last week. He was brother of O F Williamson of Goshen and had visited there. first notice of his accident arrived May 15 with details never received. A telegram announced his death last night.
Sexton Blough has a force at work preparing Oak Ridge cemetery for Memorial Day one week from tomorrow. The backward spring will make flowers very scarce for decoration. The cemetery presents a fine appearance.
Elkhart lawyers have formed a walking club to tramp home from Dunlaps. Members include R. E. Proctor Glen Sawyer Ira H. Church H. E. Zigler E. A. Baker and P. L. Turner.
The Perfection Grease Company of South Bend has been incorporated with a capital of $25,000. Directors named are Edward J. Welsh Albert A. Funk and Dudley M. Shively.
Walter Gardner a news agent was arrested on a Lake Shore passenger train in South Bend after a complaint by the superintendent of the Union News company of Chicago.
The Goshen delegation representing the Lady Maccabees will leave on the 8 30 car tomorrow to attend the state convention in South Bend.
The Chicago, South Bend and Northern Indiana Railway plans a dispatcher's office and private telegraph line to speed Goshen to South Bend service. Full changes come next fall with double tracking into South Bend and through cars to shave trips to about one hour, replacing slow regular telephone control.
In St Joseph circuit court attorney Pattee opened the defense for Armstrong arguing insanity tied to a lifelong love of machinery. The defense will introduce evidence of Armstrong as a boy building a shop and studying gears while the state seeks capital punishment if guilty.
The appellate court held that a country road laid out sixty years prior with undefined width cannot justify city actions to plant shade trees or add a sidewalk inside a long standing fence line. The Goshen road from Fort Recovery to the Wabash river varied in practice, and only land actually used as a road becomes a highway.
Mayor Kohler received an invitation for all local officials to attend the seventh annual Municipal League of Indiana gathering in Logansport from June 18 to 20. Ex Mayors Dunne and Darrow, Chief McWeeny, and other officials will discuss municipal problems. Mayor McKee of Logansport extended the courtesy invitation, which will be accepted by many.
At the Northern Indiana Interscholastic league meet in South Bend on May 11, Goshen athletes criticize the cheap banners and medals awarded, contrasting them with the finer trophies presented when the meet was held in Goshen in 1906, despite a strong victory by Goshen teams.
At the last meeting of the Fifteen Circle it was decided not to join a merger with the Twentieth Century and Woman's Art Clubs in Elkhart. The group will cooperate with the clubs in a series of lectures if the other clubs wish to pursue such an enterprise.
Dr. T. C. Armfield of Hiwood warns that renal calculus is a newly identified affliction affecting motormen and conductors on the Indiana Union Traction lines due to daily exposure to high tension electric current. The veteran physician notes many cases among line workers.
Albert and Lavina Brothers sold 160 acres two and a half miles southeast of Goshen, part of the J M Latta farm, to A B Mier of Ligonier for 16000 dollars.
George W Farrell is listed as ill with acute indigestion at his residence on Highth Street. Authorities or caretakers note his condition as of the latest report from his home.
Arrangements underway to invite automobile owners within 100 miles of Wino na Lake for an Independence Day celebration at the assembly grounds. Nicola the magician is secured as entertainment. Two hundred cars expected to join a decorated automobile parade and touring party.
In Auburn Judge Bratton arraigned Whitey Black who bragged about escaping from the Tonia Michigan prison. The judge refused to hear alleged officers’ misconduct and ordered the convict returned to the sheriff for detention. Suspicion grows that Black and accomplices were aided in their escape.
Jesse Jacobs known as Red Jacobs was seized in South Bend on charges of stabbing bartender Andrew Clughardt near Colfax and Michigan streets. The incident began when Clughardt and friends met Jacobs and two companions. a remark escalated, leading Jacobs to draw a knife and pursue the young man.
A four year old girl named Alice was abducted by her father in Elkhart and later restored to Mrs. J Ward Case in Winnipeg. Both mother and child returned to Elkhart. The father, once a known street fakir, signed a contract forfeiting his right to possessing the child and returned to Pilkhart to work in the dispatcher’s office for the C S B N I Ry Co.
Farmer Josiah Christopher was injured when a load of hay upset at Nap panee. He struck the wagon wheel and double-tree, rendering him unconscious.
Miss Fausch won the sideboard raffle conducted by Miss Ber tha Krants. Ticket No. 49 secured the prize.
Circuit court yesterday overruled the defense request for a new trial in Helen M Baxter admr of Schuyler Baxter estate vs Johnson and Son. Several related cases were dismissed or deferred and venue changed to Judge Adair after Judge Hanan refused to sit.
Manager Haydn of Irwin invites the Goshen Greys to a theatre show tomorrow night. A special verse composed by Haydn in their honor will be sung to Colleen Bawn tune. Song sheets will display the words for all to join in.
Alfred E. Hughes a 23 year old native of Churubusco Indiana drowned off the Netherlands near Rotterdam. After four years in the American navy he became a British marine to reach foreign waters. Official reports say he was accidentally drowned.

John Shaw of Warsaw pleaded guilty in the South Bend circuit court to grand larceny for stealing a horse owned by Fred Eberhardt of Mishawaka. Aged 27, he was sentenced to 1 to 14 years in the Indiana reformatory, three years disfranchisement, and a $10 fine.

The Indiana G A R state encampment proceeds in Fort Wayne despite bad weather. Tomorrow Company G of the First Regiment Indiana National Guard plans to march in the parade. Marion aims to host the 1908 encampment.
On Monday Purdue students took possession of the John Robinson circus at Lafayette. The side show tent center pole rigging was cut and a fight between Razorbacks and students seemed imminent, though no serious damage occurred.

The ninth annual commencement at Nappanee High School was held in the Auditorium. Fourteen graduates were presented: Harry Price, Bessie Bechtel, Ora Guiss, Clayton Blessing, Bonnie Wilson, Hugh Whiteman, Grace Neff, Harry Laudeman, Dessie Evans, Richard Johnson, Almeda Miller, Claude Coppes, Harold Johnson, and Nellie West.
The W C T U was hosted by Mrs O W Cunningham with Rev Butts of St Mark's M By church delivering an address praising women in reform and missionary work. Grace Cunningham sang solo, Hamman of Parkside played a piano solo, and Gladys Rohrer sang. A silver medal contest is planned at Mrs Daniel T Kauffman’s home next Friday with a silver offering to support contestants.
