The Senate privileges and elections committees ordered a sub committee to start probe into pre-convention campaign expenditures by Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. Hearings will be open and conducted with dispatch beginning May 24 in Washington.
The local Salvation Army campaign enlists Boy Scouts to canvass every business and home. Beginning this afternoon through tomorrow they will distribute enrollment blanks and seek subscriptions, with clubs and women’s groups urged to cooperate and donate.
Mrs. Bert Annis says about 4500 dollars in hundred dollar bills were taken from her husband and his niece after their Ford car was struck by a Pennsylvania train near Valparaiso while traveling from South Bend to Chicago. Tramps on the train are suspected. Annis was transporting the cash for a business deal.
Henry VP. Davidson of J. P. Morgan & Co was subpoenaed to testify before a young legislative committee probing profiteering. His testimony aims to explain the causes of discontent over the present economic situation in New York.
William Ponomarak, a South Bend window cleaner, is hospitalized in Epworth after his safety belt hook pulled out while washing a second story window at the Nickel hotel.
Guy Schultz twenty of Claypool dies at McDonald hospital Warsaw after tetanus developed from a gunshot wound. He was plowing a field when his shotgun discharged as horses frightened him from the plow. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon.
Washington May 21 Admiral Dewey's former home on Rhode Island avenue near Connecticut avenue is being remodeled into a store after the American people gifted the residence for his Manila victory. The Dewey house was sold years before his death and is now part of the city’s commercial expansion.
The Interstate Commerce Commission approved a loan of at least 27 million dollars from the 350 million dollar revolving fund to finance railroads buying equipment to meet public transportation needs. Additional disbursement recommendations include 440 thousand for claims, 120 million for short lines, 50 million for additions and betterment, and 372 million for equipment moves. The commission estimates 2000 locomotives 200 freight cars and 20000 refrigerator cars needed, with existing orders costing about 43 million, likely less than a quarter of total planned.
A serious coal shortage in Indiana is reported with the primary cause cited as lack of transportation. The shortage affects power and industry as officials note supply delays and logistical bottlenecks.
John W. McCardle vice chairman of the Indiana Public Service Commission sent a telegram to the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington. He reports idle mines and rising tonnage delays due to car shortages and urges priority movement of coal and return of empty cars to prevent utility closures.
Washington May 21 the interstate commerce commission issued emergency orders to stand until the state crisis passes. The orders suspend normal freight rules and direct common carriers to route traffic by the most available lines to relieve congestion and expedite movement. The move centralizes control of railroads with the government and aims to relieve congestion on east and west systems.
Three Warsaw men and three Milford girls were married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Scott in Fort Wayne with Rev. Smith of Dayton officiating. The couples include Leonard E. Puffer and Pauline Lentz. Trossell Hi. Phillips and Theodora Merrick. Harry Hoover and Beatrice Myers. The newlyweds will reside in Warsaw.
Noah Leer and Jemima Tabody-Leer, both 75, died of pneumonia within three days at their Wakarusa home. They were buried at Strutzman cemetery Bashor chapel after services at Old Order church two miles west of Goren. Leer predicted his wife would follow him soon.
John Feltmire and Raymond McNamara were arrested in Niles after allegedly holding up three people at gunpoint. They gave Chicago as their home addresses. McNamara reportedly has a Chicago gunman record and is described as the son of a wealthy tunnel foreman.
Chas Method bids $15.00 for the fair property now held by a receiver. Bids are being received for the office of Davis and Schaefer.
Rev. Walker W. Miller resigns as pastor of the Eighth Street Mennonite Church effective August 1 1920. The new church built at about 28000 cost with 21000 received and pledged leaving about 7000 debt. Miller came to Goshen May 1 1919 from Inglewood First Mennonite and returns there after many friends praise his Goshen work.
Mrs James Orn of Milford suffers a fractured right arm after a fall on a cement sidewalk at Mrs Rex home in Milford. She was visiting while her husband and son attended a funeral in southern Indiana.
Washington May 21 A renewed outburst in the senate today against profiteering followed a pledge from Republican leaders that legislation to require public corporations to file income and excess profits tax returns would receive immediate attention.
The Elkhart Review, founded in 1859, publishes its last issue as the plant sells to C. D. Greenleaf and A. H. Beardster of the Elkhart Truth. The sale follows a receiver's auction with the plant to be closed this evening and a full inventory planned. Former city editor M. M. Frink becomes telegraph editor in South.
Lafayette May 21 The tenth annual Indiana apple show will be held in Indianapolis November 19 20 according to an announcement by Hi E H Swaim secretary of the Indiana Horticultural Society.
Elkhart cemetery workers presented a petition to the city council protesting a threatened repeal of the Sunday burial ban. The sexton said a seven day week would make it impossible to maintain a working force, noting workers already log long hours six days a week.
Don Gorham has received a new Willys Knight sedan signaling a fresh acquisition in local automobile news. The Willys Knight replaces prior transport and will reportedly improve daily commutes.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions tonight and Saturday with little change in temperatures.

PARIS May 21 The General Federation of Labor votes 96 to 11 to end the general strike supporting the railroad men. Farmers reported discouraged by the late season.
The board awarded an alley paving contract to L. W. Seaman at 3.86 per square yard for alleys between Main and Fifth and Pike and Clinton. Petitions for sewer extensions and sidewalk moves were granted, assessments for Ninth Street sewer postponed to the next meeting, and the water mains work ordered. Goshen schools physical director received permission to use City Park for a May 25 training program.
Joseph Higgs assistant to the fax ferret leaves for Lafayette then New York to sail on the Lapland for England. On June 12 he travels to London to visit his son a lieutenant colonel in the British army. Higgs served with General Allenby in the war, earned many decorations, and is on furlough from the army in Egypt. He plans to return to Goshen around early September.
Short funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:80 o'clock at the grave in Oak Ridge cemetery. Memorial will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:51 o'clock at the Church of the Ol re.
The body of Mrs Tracey Stanley, 45, who died at St Joseph hospital in South Bend, was buried in West Union Cemetery near Wakarusa.

The youths pleaded guilty before Justice Whisler and were bound over to the May term on $300 bonds.
