Black Desperado Captured After Jail Escape
Whitey Black, alias Charles Albert Peverett of the Lake Shore gang, was recaptured at Garrett after escaping the Ionia Michigan prison. He fought fiercely during capture, was shackled and placed in a straight jacket in Auburn sheriff’s office, and faced double guard upon return. Leona Morrell of Mishawaka died after a five day illness from spinal meningitis at age 48. Born August 9 1858 in Preble County Ohio, she married Ezra Morrell July 21 1876. Survivors include daughter Iva Godfrey and son Harley Morrell, all of Mishawaka, and a grandchild ill with the disease. She moved to Mishawaka from Goshen three years ago and is a sister of Asa Aker of South Cottage Avenue.
