Jury commissioners in Goshen drew May term jurors for Elkhart county. The grand jury meets next Monday, petit jurors listed, and the May 23rd date set for the petit panel. Several local officials note arrests and rewards in ongoing cases.
Hubert K. Ames a brakeman on the Big Four was injured when Local freight No. 52 backed in the yards. He was on a box car edge when the engine moved backward, throwing him down and across the tracks. His right leg was badly cut, hands bruised, face and neck scratched, clothes torn. Train stopped before wheels could strike his legs. Witnesses from Goshen Milling transported him to Bowser & Brecknell hospital. Ames' home is in Kentucky. his wife remains at Wabash.
In Elkhart Township L M Vail defeats W J Davis by a margin of 695 to 353 in the 34th circuit Republican primary. The 1051 votes signal strong turnout with Goshen Times opposing Vail and supporting Davis. Follow-up moves aim to split support in Concord and LaGrange counties ahead of June convention.
The congregation considers building a handsome church at the corner of Sixth and Purl streets. The parsonage would move to the rear of the lot. They hope to have the church ready for occupancy early in the fall.
J Wade 18 is touring the county for the Prohibition party as a full ticket is planned. In Justice Youngs court Harvey Alwine pleaded guilty to public intoxication and is jailed for twelve days after a spectacle at Main street and Lincoln avenue.
The sidewalks and bridges committee of the council has ordered many new walks around the city in the past week. It is expected that a couple of miles of walks will be built before fall.
Thieves struck Anthony Deahl's yard twice last week stealing a prized tulip collection. If suspects are identified they will be prosecuted.
Wm. Noecker, a worker at the Sadera and Egbert mill, moved to Albion last night. He leaves behind several creditors including an undertaker, a butcher, a grocer, and a baker. He earned $2.25 per day at the mills.
Extensive repairs are under way at the State bank to provide needed accommodations for the new loan association. The vault is being enlarged and rearranged. The Yellow Kide defeated the Exist Goshen baseball team 23 to 1 Saturday afternoon, witnessed by a large crowd. A new pipe organ for St James Episcopal church will likely arrive tomorrow.
Rev Howard Steininger of the Evangelical church near Syracuse is arrested after a raid on fish piracy. Associates Darwin Bartholomew and William Darr fled. all were implicated by Steininger who aided lawmen. Deputy Fish Commissioner E C Sala organized the raid with L B Whippy John H Burket and S Flickinger. The three hid on Conklin Hill and captured Steininger with a 225 foot net. Bartholomew and Darr escaped but face arrest. Prosecution heads to Warsaw with Salle monitoring the case.
An old man David Evane and his grandson escaped injury when a wagon carrying logs was hit by a southbound electric car near Fifth and Main at Herr Park. The horse bolted into a fence. the wagon suffered minor damage but no one was hurt.
Goshen merchants fault Lake Shore officials for running the plug train between Millersburg and Goshen, delaying west bound No 15 by two to four minutes each morning. General Passenger Agent Smith says it must arrive on time in Elkhart, and plans to change No 15’s schedule are likely.
City officials urge immediate attention to alleys and vaults as season begins. From now until September, alley-ways must be kept clean and well maintained to prevent hazards and improve safety for residents.
A town notice reports Mayor Desh will deliver the Memorial Day address in Syracuse on May 30 at 2 PM. The item notes local events and obituaries including William P. English of Wheeling who died in Milford of tuberculosis after visiting his sister.
Dispatches report Black and allies plan stiff resistance to removal to Michigan with lawyer-led defense in Joplin. A Chicago telegram notes Gov. Pingree seeks Kalamazoo bank robbery suspect Albert Peveritt alias Harry C White. Police pursue Lake Shore gang member Ralph Warhopper while the Richland bank robbery cost Kalamazoo county about 45000 dollars.
The big Four rail line prepares to launch regular Ben ton Harbor and St. Joe runs with occasional special trains and a Sabbath excursion to Indianapolis before June 1. Lake Shore tours begin in June, with Chicago trips and Niagara Falls, Boston and New York sailings planned for fall.

Mrs Morris of Niles dies of heart trouble and epilepsy amid initial suspicions of self harm due to medicine. Frank Hall dies from cigarette smoke in Indianapolis with skin showing poison. Indiana Music Teachers hold annual convention at Columbus June 26 27 28 29. Dr Robert Moore of Lakeville, 75, dies. LaPorte county reports sheep killing dogs.
W A Shepard of Jackson is pursued by creditors in Elkhart South Bend and Kalamazoo reports a wider reach of his alleged cons. Goshen Y’s hold an ice cream social May 16 to fund temperance work. Lake Shore retools time cards with local trains possibly stopping here. Central washout delays No 15. Indiana gubernatorial gossip centers on Kern and Burke.
