Sheriff Elliott pursues Louis F. Shank through Illinois after he used his brother in law David Bechtel s name on notes over a year ago. A $25 reward is offered. Shank is alleged to have been near Kewanee and Galesburg with evidence of his movements.
A horse hitched to Stoutenour and Tiedemann’s wagon bolted after glimpsing a Standard Oil Co wagon on West Wilkinson street. It broke the single tree and harness, ran toward East Lincoln avenue, was caught by Mr. Stoutenour near the grocery, sustaining minor scratches. total damage a few dollars. This marks the fourth broken single tree by the animal.
An elderly woman crossing near Cosmo bridge narrowly escaped being struck by a 4:30 interurban car as it began to depart. The motorman hit emergency brakes, stopping the vehicle just in time.
The Elkhart park board closes a contract with the Trumpet Notes to provide music for Wednesday night open air concerts all summer. Officials anticipate strong turnout and keep up the band’s longtime popularity.
Engineer Henry Cook surveyed a planned addition yesterday in War saw for Winona park. A Reynolds Winona assembly manager oversees the project. Health foods fans may try Nutrient by Milling Co Battle Creek, Goshen pothing claimed equal to it.

Hoover Miss Nellie Hoover aged about 21, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harvey Hoover, seven miles north of Goshen in Jefferson township, died Monday. Physicians could not determine exact cause after a week of illness. She attended the HikHart Institute and became a school teacher. Funeral services set for 10 a.m. Wednesday.
The Illinois prohibition orator Dr. W. H. Boles proposes a ten day stay at Nineveh and Greenwood, then Franklin and Johnson county stirring up support before moving to Henry county. He will tour with a big tent and a singing quartet and may take one night engagements after shaking up Quaker communities. Editor Eldredge of the Middlebury Independent urges Boles to visit Elkhart county.
Charles W. Miller republican nominee for attorney general dined at the White House with President Roosevelt and Mrs Root. They discussed the Indiana state convention. Miller reported Roosevelt spoke enthusiastically about the convention but dodged a question on the platform. The president reportedly not fully satisfied with the platform. Miller departed for Indianapolis at 7 p.m.
Talk resumes on reviving summer open air concerts in Court Park. Opponents urge keeping the yard as is after heavy city and county spending and janitor Warden’s efforts. Commissioners will hear the matter soon, with a counterview favoring public square concerts and better lighting for musicians.
In New York Hospital Mr and Mrs Al Zollinger of Emer gon street were informed their 17 year old son Charles was struck by an engine in New York City. He is in a city hospital and his injuries are not serious and he is recovering nicely.
An engine ran extra on the Lake Shore road and struck a horse at 3:45 yesterday morning about a half mile west of the Misha waka station. The animal was not killed but had to be shot.
Mr and Mrs Charles Anderson of West Madison street plan to depart in June for a three month visit to Europe. Mr Anderson recently left his position with the Perfection bakery in the recent past.
Mrs Wilson Roose arrives from Logansport and will live in Goshen again. The Roose family’s many friends welcome their return. Mrs J M Bush dies at her Warsaw home yesterday.
Democratic state gathering in Indianapolis on June 4 sparks wide activity across Indiana with plans for a robust slate of nominees. While many incumbents seek second nominations, several contests for state offices emerge including auditor and attorney general races. Party leaders anticipate one of the best conventions yet, though delegates have not yet been chosen.
The document itemizes annual salaries for South Bend officials: mayor 1800, city clerk 1500, city judge 1200, comptroller 1500, city attorney 1000, city engineer 1400, health commissioner 500, board of public safety members 4100, and councilmen 150 each. Trustees of New Carlisle St Joe county grant Chicago Indiana Air Line Railway a 50 year franchise to build an electric line through the town. W Osgood Orton and George W Bryson of South Bend named as grantees. Road must operate within 12 months. Company plans South Bend to Chicago via Michigan City Indiana.
The New Paris Cemetery Association met on May 12, 1902 to elect officers for the year. Officers chosen were President J J Harriman Secretary 8 F Charpie and Treasurer H Sumaker. Members listed include J L McFerren W Mills D Buttsfield F Beckner L M Whitehead and M Rohrer. Treasury stood at 21 dollars and a memorial day cleanup was requested of lot owners.
Col James 8 Dodge of Elkhart, a prominent Grand Army man, attended the state meeting yesterday. He was a candidate for governor at the Republican convention two years ago and may decide to run again in two years. He is currently focused on business and paying little attention to politics.
Immel and Hess sold George Mutehler's Clinton township farm about eight miles southeast of Go shen to Newton Greene for 2800 dollars. The same agency sold Alonzo Weatherhead's residence on West Wilkinson street to John and Chas Lehman for 500 dollars.
Milton Meyer, tried for larceny, remained missing after yesterday's setting in South Bend. Attorneys agreed to defer the action until a later term. If he does not appear at the next setting, his bondsmen will be liable on the bond.
James P. Hornaday reports that Charles W. Miller of Goshen, the Republican nominee for Attorney General, was admitted to practice before the Indiana Supreme Court today on the motion of Senator Boveridge.
The first committee meeting selecting William Parfitt as manager set out tasks for a big Fourth of July celebration in Gosden. Plans include bands, industrial feature, G A R posts, hose-team contests, fireworks, park use, licenses funding, and a patriotic address by Prof F E Hering of Notre Dame if he accepts. Two local men were shot at near New Carlisle in a reported motive linked to Perry Runnels.
The Knights of Pythias national convention will be held in San Francisco August 10 to 20 drawing members from across the country. California officials promise warm hospitality, with side trips to orange groves Lake Tahoe Yosemite Hotel del Monte and Lick Observatory. Railroads plan reduced rates to encourage attendance and travelers are arranging trips from the region.
John Turner of the Northern Pacific and W W Richardson of the Pennsylvania lines have arranged an August excursion from Indianapolis to Yellowstone Park and back. A special train will depart from the state capital and run through to the park without changes. Turner promises the train will be the handsomest and best-equipped yet pulled from Indianapolis.
Paul Preston son of Rev A. Preston former pastor of First M E church returned home this morning after arriving Saturday with the Fort Wayne High School nine. He says the local team faces a tough game against Fort Wayne as their pitcher is a whirlwind. Goshen boys stood up before Joe Puise last week.
Police appeal for information on 17 year old Misa Elizabeth Bayley who disappeared from Muncie last Thursday. Described as 108 pounds with sandy hair, light complexion, blue eyes, stiff right index fingerprint and retiring demeanor. Also sought is 45 year old Otto Rennke, paroled thief from Michigan City.
Edith Grace Kraner of Kendallville and Martin Virgil of Bristol married Sunday afternoon at 4 at the Kraner home on Orchard street. The Rev A C Ormond officiated the ring ceremony with close relatives present. Mendelssohn’s Wedding March noted as guests enjoyed a wedding dinner, and the couple departed for Bristol to reside.
Funeral held at 10 30 am from residence near Harrison Center. Interment in German Baptist Cemetery near Southwest. Cause of death internal injury from recoil of a gun she fired to scare crows, misplacing the weapon. She was about 27 years old and survived by her husband and several relatives.
La Porte mayor Lemuel Darrow wins re election amid strong opposition and may be presented at the Monticello Tenth district convention for the Democratic nomination to Congress. Darrow’s popularity extends through northern counties and La Porte county may urge his name if he consents. Also Elkhart carpenters back a nine hour day with no pay reduction at a public meeting.
