Charles C. Latta a prominent Goshen citizen died after a 12 week illness starting with grip with an ear abscess leading to scopic meningitis. Born June 2 1852 he lived in Goshen most of his life and worked as traveling salesman and in various local businesses. Survived by wife Edna Case and four children with one son deceased. multiple siblings and one grandchild. Funeral at St James Episcopal tomorrow at 2:30 with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Rhodes Released From Smallpox Quarantine
John Rhodes a mason of 211 West Wilden avenue was released from smallpox quarantine today. Four of his family remain ill and will stay quarantined at least a week. Other quarantines at Arthur Stutsman’s West Oak Ridge avenue and Rodney Hill’s West River avenue will lift in a few days. Rhodes allegedly brought the disease from South Bend and infected Stutsman and Hill during a pool game. The father-in-law who came from Cisco, Indiana, slept in Rhodes’ bed and now has smallpox. Authorities say the quarantines protect the public and the illnesses are not chickenpox or the itch.

Mortuary notices report Annie Hauenstein aged 86 died at home near Elkhart in Bango township leaving four sons and two daughters. Minerva Jaycox widow of George died at her Elkhart home born in 1825 after forty years in the city. Grace Alma Moore died two miles south of Elkhart leaving a husband and two children and Grace’s parents. John Good died at his daughter’s home in Osolo township age 68 from liver failure with one son and four daughters surviving.

Freight Wreck Claims Fireman in Kalamazoo and Brakeman in Elyria
On Friday night in Kalamazoo a freight collision killed fireman Abner Weigner of Lima Ind and injured engineer Ira Miller, who escaped with minor injuries. In Elyria Ohio, 18 year old brakeman Charles Lantz, son of William and Mrs. Lantz of Millersburg, was fatally struck while flagging a train. Remains were brought to Millersburg for funeral at the Reformed church with Rev. I L Berkey officiating. Interment followed at Brown cemetery.
