August Von Helsbeke a soft drink parlor bartender was convicted of unlawful sale of liquor and sentenced to 30 days in St. Joseph county jail plus a 100 fine. He filed an appeal to the circuit court.

Joseph Baker of Warsaw aged over 19, Civil War veteran, died at his home at 6 this morning after several days illness. Survived by one son and two daughters. Bramwell Baker and wife of Boston were en route to Warsaw, as Mrs Baker formerly Miss Edith Thomas of Goshen.
Thirteenth District Federation of Womens Clubs held its 13th convention in Akron. Officers elected: Mrs. Ehner B. Punk Warsaw as chairman, Mrs. J Ho Marmon Mishawaka as vice chairman, Milford secretary, and Mrs. G. To Bail Michigan City treasurer. Notable reports and speakers included Miss Miande Aldrich of Winpen Lake and state president Mrs. Wo FL Tori gece. Attendees from Goshen, Bay View, Necunna, and Child Study clubs joined in meetings and discussions of value education and department work.
Boward Mc Drew, a New York Central Railroad machinist living west of ED Kuart at station 15, was fatally struck by a motor vehicle driven by J A Zeltinger. The incident occurred at the Second and Harrison streets corner as Bees and Eichart reportedly walked into the path, and Zeltinger was not blamed.
Washington May 9: Fadward H. Cunningham of Iowa was appointed by President Harding as the dirt farmer member of the Federal Reserve Board. The president also named Edward B. Fenes of Pennsylvania as an additional member of the farm loan board under the new agricultural credits legislation.
The annual Hospital day will be observed by Goshen hospital next Saturday afternoon with an elaborate program. Music will be furnished by the Goshen High School band. Window displays in downtown stores will accompany the event, and the Democrat offers printing estimates for upcoming jobs.
Chicago May 5 The state's attorney's office ruled out death by own action as a possible cause of Leighton Mount a Northwestern student whose skeleton was found under a pier in Lake Michigan Evanston Cously authorities said after questioning about a dozen people Officials also stated records on hazing of Arthur Persinger were altered showing he was bound head downward to a pier prior to the hazing incident and later changed to horizontal position The investigation continued with officials noting the Mount case remains unresolved.
Roy G. Gates of Goshen found Mrs. Jawis Parkwood’s pocketbooks southwest of New Parix. He received 6 dollars for expenses in addition to a 10 dollar reward after the original 50 dollar reward was returned, following objections by Mrs. Parkwood’s relatives.
Delegates to the 25th annual Indiana Audition society session spoke in public schools about birds and then joined a country hike to study local avifauna. The convention closed with a banquet last evening in Greensburg.

Fire of unknown origin likely from a stove under a poultry brooder destroyed the Juday family home on the Lincoln highway one mile southeast of Benton. Loss around 10000 with 5000 insured. neighbors saved most contents as the family was away at events. Fire discovered by motorists and the house was largely leveled.
A series of fires in Lagrange County causes heavy losses. Fifteen acres of valuable timber and 95 cords of stove wood burn on Gilham's farm near Brighton. Almond Wagener’s home at Belute Landing is destroyed by a fire from a defective flue. A seven room house of Mr and Mrs H A Kauffman east of Rogers Orphans Home burns, possibly from a damp incubator explosion. Homer Boyd’s home at Stroh is destroyed, with no adults present as Mrs Boyd is in hospital.
A strong quake hit northern Chile around six last night. No casualties reported though Cochiapo Lazerna and Valenar residents were alarmed. Some areas lost communications as Carrizal dispatches note ocean receded beyond low tide.
Maggie O Neal of New Paris files in circuit court to quiet her title to lot No 4 on Main Street in New Paris against Ulysses S Grant of Elkhart and others. I L Burris prepared the complaint.
U S Lesh attorney general of Indiana says the Indiana Supreme Court ruling nullifying liquor possession as a crime will have little effect. He notes possession at home falls under exemptions and the decision may simplify prima facie proof of unlawful acquiring. He adds federal law still penalizes possession and bonded liquor in businesses or excess home quantities remain evidence.
Alexander Burrows aged 42 of Elkhart fractured his left leg just above the knee in an unusual accident while dressing a blister on the bottom of his foot. He rested the foot on his other knee and, in a numb moment, twisted the leg causing the clean break.
The Elkhart Superior Court grand jury returned four indictments, including murder in the first degree against Leo Grazier, 20, a former New York Central railroad employee, linked to the April 14 slaying of railroad detective Louis Shirley. Grazier is jailed. three other indictments await arrests. The jail report criticizes redecorating needs and inmate separation. the infirmary porch should be enclosed. county farm is in fine shape. the county jail is in excellent condition. Jurors listed include Carl Berkey, Daca Leedy, David New, H. F. Stuitz, Lawrence Leer, and Amos Hoover.
Range plant Engmann Mat thews Range company announced total April sales surpassed $100000. The office noted May prospects look very bright and several departments operated overtime during the past month.
A. L. Vuillmet of this city finished a wager to walk across the continent and back with a wheelbarrow burden chained to his arms. He claimed the feat would take eight and a half months and completed it with three weeks to spare. He had been a guest at the Alder man hotel previously.
Misses Esie Winterhoff Grace Hammond and Lucretia Bender with Mesdames Henry Krutz Nevin Bretz and Prof Otto Holtkamp Gaius Baumgartner and John Thut presented a music program at Healthwin hospital in South Bend last evening. Mrs Myrtle Trump and Mrs Charles Sheap of Goshen were among patients entertained.

Beatrice Eaglebarger of Elk hart is in Elkhart General hospital with a skull fracture after a motorcycle and sidecar driven by Annie Eaglebarger struck the rear of an automobile driven by Roy Erickson of Fort Wayne at Dunlap this afternoon. Her husband and two daughters, Gertrude six and Frances four, were uninjured. She was unconscious during surgery.
Elkhart county board of commissioners will meet at the courthouse next Monday in their regular monthly session. Indications point to routine matters filling most of the agenda as road problems may arise but county unit roads 14 7 38 and 39 remain stalled pending new plans by County Surveyor Charles Kinney, to be drawn only after the commissioners So order.
In Chicago authorities reported Byron Shoup and Lina Lincoln, relatives of Warren Lincoln, living under assumed names. Lincoln, a 45 year old lawyer horticulturist, disappeared six days ago after last being seen in Aurora in January.
