Goshen voters prepare for the third city option election to decide wet or dry control. Reports show strong dry organizing and wet campaigning with eleven saloons at stake and local merchants split on the issue. Results from 1911 and 1913 reflect close contests and a volatile market for bets as bets surge or fade with each precinct tally.
Goshen prepares for the third city local option election with polls open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. Wets and drys mount a close race after Elkhart results. dry organizers cite strong local structure and finances. Campaigns are quiet with church appeals and literature on both sides.
Auditors Brown and the county commissioners will open bids Monday May 3 for improving the Goshen to Benton township road a five mile brick project with an estimated cost of 70000 dollars. Prospective bidders include W W Hatch and Sons Henry Cripe Ben Wise of Goshen and Indiana Paving Brick Co of Brazil.
Reid, Murdoch & Co. of Chicago will begin work soon on a 50 by 80 foot salting station west of Main Street on land owned by the Big Four. The facility will include 12 large vats and six small vats and aims to distribute funds to local farmers during the summer salt project. Also noted is reports of good fishing at Lake Wawasee and an option election with polls opening at 6 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m.
Charles Frenchy Desmond found guilty of murder in the second degree for the Benton Harbor killing. Sentencing set by Judge Bridgman for May 7 with potential life imprisonment.
Charles G. Sefrit of the Washington Herald was elected president of the La Giana Press association in Bloomington. The 2016 meeting will be held in this city.

A fire at the Joe Paulus farm two miles west of town destroyed the house occupied by Allen Reed and family. Neighbors arrived quickly but lacked equipment to reach the roof. Damaged goods were moved outside, a pump house burned but no other buildings. A dog died in the pump house. insurance covered the home and Reed’s property. The Reed family sought temporary lodging with neighbors.
Alonzo Cox of East Goshen reported a horse and buggy valued at 75 dollars stolen while he was in the Gary I Kreager saloon on West Washington street. Cox parked the rig near the sidewalk about 10 30 and found it missing minutes later. Two nearby Peru residents who bought the rig from Cox months ago are suspected of knowledge. they have not been seen since the disappearance.
Discovery of lime on the Ewsher farm north of Elkhart on the Cassopolis road last year by County Agent Coffeen leads to use of marl lime on alfalfa fields near Fort Wayne. The marl lime yields results comparable to purchased lime.
Four wagon loads of gypsies were ordered out of Lagrange county. Geo. H. Holsinger, a farmer near Valentine, was robbed of $12 by a gypsy woman who induced him to have his fortune told. The sheriff recovered some of the money.
Mrs L B Grove aged 78 claims to be the first white child born in Locke township. She says she has always lived within a mile and a half of her birthplace.
Supplies for the Goshen city local option election to be held Monday were apportioned to the ten precinct inspectors by Auditor Brown.
Listing of voting locations by precinct includes the Commissioners' Room in the Court House basement, residence at 310 Queen Street, George Howett at 52 N Main St, J A Weed at 112 Olive Street, and the Township Trustee office on Lincoln Avenue.
A committee including the county health officer, the county superintendent, and the Osolo township trustees and advisory board will decide next Monday whether to erect a consolidated school building. Funds are the main obstacle. if approved, no condemnation of existing buildings is required. Three of the four current schools are in poor condition.
The Shamrock Athletic Club dedicated its new second floor quarters at 215 South Main Street with 300 attendees. Music by the Shamrock Orchestra accompanied wrestling and boxing bouts featuring Juday Middleton Amster Rule Ulery Swanson Rigby Ridenour Cripe Hassler Bikilrty Casey. About sixty ladies attended and refreshments were served.
The opening game of the 1915 base ball season at Rogers band park will be played there tomorrow afternoon at 3 o clock with the Rogers Grays meeting the Fort Wayne Cubs Admission is 23 cents Payers for the Greys include Fogel Cotherman Shabaugh Wrysong Horton Larue Sack Pratt Kirkpatrick Rigby Trump and H Larue Tipmore of Goshen will umpire Purl Larue is manager of the club Tomorrow morning the First and Second Stramrock clubs will play at Rogers band park.
Wakarusa schools held closing exercises yesterday afternoon and evening. Deputy State Superintendent John Hoffman gave an address and County Agent Coffeen spoke on crib work for boys and girls. Superintendent A E Weaver presented a stereoptical lecture on Industrial Education. Exhibits in Manual Training and Domestic Science drew good attention from patrons and farmers.
Thirteen bids were filed for the Elkhart city hall and superior court building with H. Hilen berger of Chicago submitting the high bid of 85487 and G. W. Heinzman & Son of Indianapolis the low bid of 66252. Plumbing electrical fixtures and wiring bids were also received though no awards were made by 3 o'clock.
Mrs G A Grove of Eikhart died after a stroke Thursday afternoon while at her sister’s funeral near Karusa. She was 54. The brief obituary notes apoplexy as the cause and her age.
Paris Cablegram reports a major Allied victory as eight German submarines were drawn away by British minefield and anti-submarine nets. The dispatch notes a strategic fleet retirement and highlights the success of coordinated defense efforts.
Allied reports state ten more shells hit Dunkirk with several dead and wounded. A Paris cable says eight German submarines were destroyed in the English Channel by British forces. British Majestic and Triumph battleships damaged. Jeanne d Arc reported afire. Turkish batteries said to have hit ships. vessels beached or sunk as the Dardanelles fighting continues. Reports from Athens claim Gallipoli captured by allies with Turkish losses heavy and French progress inland.
Trustees adjourned this afternoon until Monday for the county board of education meeting. Attendance officers will be elected at that session. The notice mentions a six am close and a six pm close, with a lost blue morale bar pin reward noted for return to the office.
