Wealthy Philadelphian Grover Bergdoll was found guilty by a New York court martial of failing to register for military service under the selective draft. He received a five year prison sentence at hard labor, with the decision made public today. Mrs. Peter Y. Lehman 75 of Wakarusa died about midnight after a 15 year illness. Born October 1 1844 in Mahoning County Ohio she married Peter Y. Lehman November 3 1852. They had 17 children, 4 predeceased. Survived by husband 13 children 66 grandchildren 3 great grandchildren 3 sisters 8 brothers and many relatives. Funeral Thursday 2 p.m. from Yellow Creek church with Rev J I Funk and Win Weaver officiating.
In Albany on March 30 the New York State League of Women Voters warned that Republican women members will strike on election day or switch parties if the state legislature fails to act on welfare bills. The letter was sent to Will Hays, chairman of the Republican National Committee.
N S inspector E B Wetherow of Peru state high school inspector and County Superintendent A F Weaver inspected Middebury school today noting several new instructors. Wetherow is a former superintendent of Miami county and Peru city schools.

New York March 30 Samuel Gompers president of the American Federation of Labor said that the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Order of Railway Conductors would be admitted to the federation very shortly with the other two Big Four unions joining later. The merger would bring AFL membership to about 6 million and end future strikes while curbing extremism. The move, begun nearly a year ago, surprised labor leaders and is seen as a triumph for Gompers.
Mary Ellen Golding, 56, of South Bend, was killed Sunday afternoon by an automobile owned by Arthur Wolff of Elkhart and driven by Bo Rosen of Elkhart. Rosen was arrested on a manslaughter charge while Wolff was held as a witness. Wolff returned to Elkhart after the coroner's investigation led to Rosen's release on a $2000 bond.

Chicago March 80 municipal clerks, stenographers and bookkeepers began a strike for higher salaries, crippling city business operations as they walked off the job.

Private Earnest E Hill and Sgt William Bays of the First division UT S A, stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor Louisville Ky, arrived in Goshen last evening and will remain ten days to two weeks to seek recruits. They have quarters at 217 North Main Street Simon Flickinger residence for enlistment information. Headquarters opened in Elkhart. One year enlistments offered for air service field artillery engineers and quartermaster corps. Hill and Bays are overseas veterans having crossed to France in June 1917. Hill was wounded twice including stomach wound and shoulder shrapnel. Several prospects called on the officers to start formal applications for enlistment.
The body of Louis K Hawks died at his home January 10 and was today interred on a lot in Violett cemetery after resting in the receiving vault at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The Elkhart county institute of the W. C. T. U. opens tomorrow at the First Brethren church and the First M. E. church in Goshen. Activities include sessions Thursday with talks on Child Welfare Sabbath Observance Americanization and Law Enforcement by local and state speakers led by Mrs Retta Jones of Alexandria. Nora Nowells of Millersburg issued the program.
Washington reports census figures with Clinton Indiana at 10 962 up 4 738 or 7 76 percent while Jeffersonville Indiana falls to 10 098 a decrease of 314 or 15 percent.
Police raided the Gohlin How dry saloon at 111 East Washington Street South Bend arresting eleven men charged with gambling. The saloon was run by Joseph Horka according to reports.
Coal miners demand a larger wage increase with union leaders pressing for a 27 percent rise. They state acceptance of the 27 percent offer is only temporary and insist on a sustained raise beyond the interim period.
New York March 30 Representatives of bituminous coal workers said they would seek a higher wage increase than the 27 percent accepted yesterday by the joint conference of operators and workers. A sub committee to arrange a new agreement began its session, with William Green and T. H. Tenua named by the joint committee as members of a contract panel to draft a tentative wage accord and consider the commission’s award.
