Doubt surrounds Goshen saloon licenses as county commissioners may delay April grants to May. Elkhart and Goshen applicants race to secure 11 and 22 licenses, with Proctor urging restraint to avoid April wet in Goshen and dry in Elkhart.
Reported local option elections in Washington Bristol Olive Wakarusa and Locke Nappanee townships near Goshen Elkhart will test wet or dry sentiment. Bristol feared Elkhart’s licensing push while Nappanee Olives Wakarusa shows mixed dry and wet pressures among merchants and farmers with prior wet precedent in Wyatt and nearby towns.
D. C. McDougall sells his one half interest in McDougall & Yoder monument and stone dealers to D. R. Yoder and son Leroy Yoder. McDougall plans are not fully settled and will remain in Goshen for the present at least.
The private car of actress Viola Allen was attached to Lake Shore train No 23 last night as it traveled from Fort Wayne to Elkhart, delaying the schedule.
Eight year old Frances McCarthy, daughter of John McCarthy of Mishawaka, died yesterday from diphtheria in a local illness outbreak.
The grand jury will resume next Monday as Sheriff Leader serves subpoenas on many witnesses. Twenty one indictments had been returned to date, mostly petty with a few serious offenses. Before discharge, recommendations will be made regarding the county infirmary and other buildings.
The Misses Morrice Straub Larimer and Swart hosted a charity show for Miss Jah Davis. Davis and Guy W. Dausman plan to marry tomorrow evening at First English Lutheran Church. Mrs. George F. Alderman entertained guests for Mrs. W. Jack Latta with a bridge afternoon. Ruth Stemm hosted for Pauline Hatch with Bunco and favors won by Mary Butterfield and Exon Garvin.
Mr and Mrs Harrold E Weir of Chicago have leased the Brubaker property in Parkside from Drs Geyer recently purchased by them and will move April 15th Mr Weir works with L D Sampson in industrial promotion and visited Goshen during the hospital fund lot sale and decided to make his home there and join the community
Mrs. Peabody of Columbia City died this afternoon after an attempted self harm was noted in another column of today’s paper. Miss Grace Hattel remains ill with tonsillitis. St. Mark's ladies plan a pastry sale at Smith-Clark Co furniture store Saturday. Chicago Coffee Cake and Parker House Rolls-Jennings, at [text incomplete].
Crawfordsville and three nearby townships voted against the return of saloons in an option election. The city, seat of Montgomery County and home to Wabash College, remains dry by a majority of 136, continuing dry status under the local option law.
Fort Wayne reports Perry township in Allen county voted dry by 20 points in a historic election under option law. Huntertown lies in the township with three saloons previously. County rules cap saloons at one per 750 inhabitants, setting a total limit of 112, with 85 in Fort Wayne, as more than 300 saloons existed countywide before the change.
Churubusco and Smith townships in Whitley county voted wet by 32 votes yesterday, mirroring Columbia City which went wet Tuesday by 233 votes in the same county.
Hratford township in Adams county voted against saloons yesterday by a majority of 27. The measure reflects local temperance sentiment and will influence county policy and enforcement decisions.
County Auditor Batchelor filed a bill with City Clerk Rimpler for 405.40 covering total expense of the city local option election in Goshen ten voting precincts held last Tuesday. Warrants to precinct inspectors will be drawn against City Treasurer Watts and payable starting Tuesday April 4.
Fort Wayne Gary and South Bend are Indiana cities controlled by the booze interests and will gain extended notoriety. Councils refused to raise liquor licenses to 500 under the new law while the minimum is 300. South Bend had 50 and Fort Wayne 300 minimum. South Bend has about 275 saloons Gary about 200 and Fort Wayne about 230. Indianapolis has decided upon a 500 license.
Dr. R. H. Thomson a noted palmist from Kansas City Mo occupies rooms over Boyts restaurant offering palm reading and consultations on past present and future. He comes highly recommended and promises guidance on human affairs.
The shoe firm of H. C. Helfrich in Elkhart today reported it was the fifth victim of a clever check forger who operated in the city with remarkable success. Police have no clues and believe the forger worked with a confederate.
Officers learned that the tip about U S deserter William Nelson did not come from a disreputable woman as reported yesterday. The informant was a woman who said Nelson lived with a notorious character.
Measles outbreak disrupts Goshen public schools especially in primary grades with only six or seven pupils present in rooms of up to 35. Attendance severely limited as illness spreads.
The city medical society will meet tonight at 8 o'clock in the Office of Dr. Eby.
The family of A. Puschmann was released from quarantine today after a period of isolation. No further details were provided about the circumstances or location of the quarantine.
The Elkhart city and Northern Construction Co face a $1,000 damage suit by George W. Beerup after he fell into an unsighted sewer trench on East Jackson Street. The case hinges on alleged negligence guarding the open trench and involves City Attorney Proctor and defense by J L Harman Ira H Church.
Mrs. Etta Hoak aged 53 died at her daughter Mrs. Ada Kruger home in Mishawaka after a 15 month illness from a complication of diseases. Born in Ohio on April 2, 1857 she moved to Mishawaka five years ago from Ligonier. She is survived by her husband two daughters one sister and one brother.
Miss Delta Kauffman a Mishawaka schoolteacher from Goshen was taken to St Joseph hospital in Mishawaka after a severe pneumonia attack. Her parents Mr and Mrs Daniel Kauffman have gone to Mishawaka to be with her.
The will of E A Carpenter former Elkhart postmaster was probated yesterday in the Elkhart superior court. All property, real and personal, is left to his wife Grace A Carpenter. The will was made last Friday.
The Ulery pool room has been moved to the second story of the Ulery block to make room for a saloon opened by R. H. Collins.
At the Lyric theater a light comedy by Selig and an Edison comedy entertain audiences. A Gaumont thriller also plays, offering variety in the evening program with three distinct film styles.
Elkhart anti-saloon figures Rev. H. N. Spear and Dr. C. L. George say reports of remonstrances to bar saloons are unfounded. They back waiting to see election outcomes before further agitation and note business interests may scrutinize saloon operators after reopening.

Charles B. Rogers died at his son Claude E. Rogers home in South Bend after a seven month cancer illness. He leaves his wife, two daughters Mable Mull and Helen, and son Claude. Born in Cardington Ohio 1854, he worked for Collier Bros. The private funeral was held at 3 PM at his son’s residence with Rev. Henry Hostetter officiating.
John Espa Hayden 79 of near Pierceton died from injuries after a heavy barn door swung shut in strong wind as he entered the barn. Hayden was a prominent prohibitionist and local figure.
Curtis and Fred Mack of Elkhart who run the Van Dyke Eaton stock company faced a serious fire in Des Moines Indiana when the auditorium theater burned. The Van Dyke Eaton effects were consumed and the company had performed at the Jefferson late in 1908.
W H Shumaker a former Jackson township resident now tied to newspapers in Grand Rapids Michigan and South Bend Indiana has become a proprietor of the Three Rivers Times-Hustler.
Hicks the weather profit forecasts a varied April with rain and thunderstorms followed by frost and fair spells. He cautions of windy days and sudden changes while noting periods of mild warmth across the month.

The state board of pardons is urged to revise rules to consider only life terms or long sentences for terminally ill prisoners. A. C. Troutman, convicted of forgery in this county, sought release. friends told the board his plan to marry the bank director’s daughter in Nappanee was halted by the arrest. He forged a note to fund a home and wedding, but the plan collapsed and he received a 2 to 14 year sentence.
The Kosciusko circuit court case over Chas L Brown’s will nears completion after eight days and about 60 witnesses. Albert Leedy testified about Brown’s grooming and frequent contact, asserting Brown appeared of sound mind. Brown, once a Leesburg saloonkeeper and five times married, left all property to the Warsaw firm Widaman and Widaman. Brown’s children from his first wife challenge the will.
Alton Packard the master American cartoonist humorist and versatile entertainer appears as the fifth number in the Citizens Lecture Course at the Jefferson tomorrow evening March 31 after over a dozen years on the Lyceum platform. His engagements include numerous returns season by season.

A Chicago dealer in manuscripts is prosecuted for selling the play In the Palace of the King to Aurora Illinois high school students for class production. Some plays with paid authors up to 2000 dollars weekly have sold in manuscript form for five dollars. Dealers obtain texts by sending stenographers to theatres to capture dialogue. Goshen high school classes in 1909 and 1910 paid royalties of fifty dollars to agents for George Ade for The College Widow and The County Chairman.
The body of 72 year old Oregon i Richmond was found in St. Joseph Michigan. A retired doctor and former army captain prepared for death writing directions to the coroner and using poison to end his life.
