In Goshen the city local option election returned a wet majority of 146 with 2,380 votes cast. Wet wins were led by precincts Three Four Five and Eight, while Ninth and Tenth stayed dry. Boundary changes and West Side shifts influenced totals compared to two years ago.
The Goshen vote ended with a wet outcome as saloons were not to return, while Elkhart stayed dry or opposed the measure. Merchants feared a dry Goshen could push Elkhart into wetness but the townspeople backed the wet result. Returns showed the town went wet by last evening with most precincts in.
Election commissioners canvassed the wets and dries in Elkhart and Goshen at the county auditor's office. Goshen board members were James O. Smith Elwood Starbuck and D C Batchelor with 146 majority for wets. Elkhart board led by Ernest W Lohrman Willard M Elwood and D O Batchelor with 468 net majority.
Wet defeats prevailed in eight of nine Indiana cities voting on licensed saloons with Princeton Dunkirk Columbia City Goshen Elkhart Washington Greensburg and Greenfield approving. Fowler also voted wet while Parke county townships all went wet. City results show margins with Washington 331 to 0? not provided for all. detailed tallies listed for several cities.
Goshen applicants including George F. Alderman Anton B. Witt William F Fredeke John Schnurr and others await county commissioners action at the regular April session. Licenses advertised may be deferred till May and 11 to 12 saloons are expected in the city.
Mrs Daniel A Sanders hosted a bridge gathering yesterday afternoon with prizes going to Mrs Harry M Sanders Mrs D W Neidig and Mrs E W Hawks. Mrs James A Arthur and Mrs Thomas Mew hosted a bridge this afternoon. Mrs W B Leas gave a masquerade party last night.
A blaze last night and into this morning damaged the New York State Capitol in Albany, with four of six wings badly burned. Officials estimate losses from five to ten million dollars, linked to faulty wiring and a million dollar stairway blaze, halting assembly hall use for up to two weeks amid graft allegations from the building period.
Mayor Spohn calls a special common council meeting for Friday night to elect a replacement for James F. Young Republican from the Fifth ward who resigned after moving to Warsaw. Young’s term ends January 1, 1914 with a $100 annual salary. The council is split three Democrats and three Republicans with a Democratic mayor. Democrats named William H. Miller and Henry Cripe are linked to the vacancy. Cripe ran against Young in 1909. It is expected a Democrat will win.
Indignation follows city council vote preventing liquor license increase from 300 to 500. Rumors of moving to dry wards arise as South Bend Tribune mounts opposition to saloons.

William Nelson, about 22, of Goshen area on Fish Lake road, was arrested in Goshen on a charge of deserting from the U S Navy at Philadelphia. He admitted desertion and later that he had enlisted in the navy. Fort Sheridan was alerted for his transfer. a $40 reward is offered.
Rumors that Elkhart ministers would lead protests against saloons in the Second, Third and Fourth wards were denied by local preachers who tire of persistent agitation. In Goshen, saloons are expected mainly in the Third ward where 231 wet votes to 148 dry gave a wet majority of 83, negating a blanket demonstration.
The funeral for Melvin R. Cuthbert took place at 10:30 this forenoon at his parents' home on Chicago Avenue. Fulfilling sympathy, 75 Chicago-Detroit Bay Co. workers contributed $85 to cover expenses. Receipts and remaining funds were presented to Mr. Cuthbert.
Dr. D. L. Miller, confined at home by erysipelas, returned to his office today. Dr. A. C. Yoder, previously ill, shows improvement. Jonas Rapp, ill for some time at his rooms above Smith grocery, remains in serious condition.
Reports say the Democratic state administration plans to appoint Peter Kruger of Plymouth as deputy for South Bend in the state labor bureau.

Washington Bristol Olive Wakarusa and Locke Nappanee townships vote Friday on a dry option. Campaigns are absent and temperance sentiment runs strong in Bristol Nappanee Wakarusa and nearby areas, where saloons have not operated for years.

The vote cast yesterday exceeded two years ago as residents traveled from far points to participate. J. Clint Beck left his Elk hart postal route to return and cast his ballot, illustrating strong local participation as Clint never fails to vote.

A special entertainment at Madison Street School on Thursday March 30 at 7 30 pm showcases First to Sixth graders in a music study demonstration under Supervisor G Hesser. The program opens with First and Second grades followed by rhythm work tone drive and note songs with each grade presenting progress ending in two and three part singing by the Sixth grade. Proceeds fund a new piano. admission 20 cents.

The 16 year old son of M Thacher, a Boston store magnate, sparked a scene on the Twentieth Century when he ducked under a seat to avoid leaving with his mother at South Bend. He aimed for Vandalia then Culver to continue as a student.
A pony owned by I. G. Lehman of 169 Crescent street ran away yesterday afternoon and struck a rig driven by Jesse Tulley of 613 North Second street on North Main street. The accident caused minor damage and no injuries.

A southbound Lake Shore freight train was held up by three robbers at Auburn Junction twenty miles north of Fort Wayne at 9 last night. Crew forced to surrender watches and 50 dollars fled after robbers. The engine was cut off and chase ensued until robbers fled into the woods toward Garrett. Authorities in Fort Wayne Auburn and Garrett joined the hunt with farmers assisting.
Mrs. T. C. Whitcomb of Middlebury died yesterday morning at Longcliff from Brights disease after a long illness. She was 72, born Jane Carr, and survived by her husband and son Myron E. Whitcomb of Elkhart, with a late son Alva E. deceased. Two sisters, Mary Foster and Sarah Shobe, also survive. Funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 PM at the residence with Rev. Bowen officiating. interment in Middlebury Cemetery.

Thaddeus Talcott, the aged wealthy inventor jailed in St. Joseph county for perjury and contempt, grows furious after long delays and losing daily visits from a nearby girl. He paced his cell for hours denouncing people and events as three old accounts suits loom over him.
A man naming himself James Wilson passed counterfeit checks at five Elkhart stores including L C Wells Shafer and Schulz F A Blessing Scoles and Co and the Winer clothing store. He obtained 20 dollars from each shop and fled. No trace of the suspect has been found.
