Soldier keeps shinplaster relic from Civil War pay
B H Clay, once of Goshen and now with McCray Refrigerator in Kendallville, served in the 29th Indiana volunteers and was paid $70.20. The paymaster gave him 20 cents in government shinplasters. He kept one ten-cent piece as a souvenir, gifting the other to his brother, and has carried the piece for 43 years, still looking as good as new.
