St. Joseph and Elkhart Power to Build New Dam
The St. Joseph and Elkhart Power Company began actual work on a 21 foot dam across the St. Joseph river above Hen Island, about ax and a half miles above South Bend and two and a half miles above Mishawaka. Twenty men led by engineer Lang and hydraulic expert Charles H. Pavey will construct the modern plant to generate 4000 to 5000 horse power for South Bend manufacturing. A 3000 horsepower steam reserve will back up when water is scarce, with power to be sent to South Bend by next fall.
