Westbound Lake Shore fast mail train No 43 ran off the track at the Grand Trunk crossing in South Bend. Locomotive No 607 overturned blocking both tracks for hours. Engineer Shuler and fireman Harry Reed escaped unharmed while several mail clerks were shaken but not seriously injured. Wrecking crew from Elkhart freed the engine. damage described as nominal.
