Washington officials say a European neutral may propose mediation to avert war with Germany. They stress no offer will be considered unless Germany ends ruthless submarine warfare. President Wilson plans to address Congress in an extra session on April 2.
Miss Marie Bowman daughter of Mr and Mrs John Bowman of South Third street escaped from men who stopped her on a side street in Elkhart and rushed into the interuban depot. Dr G W Kirby reported the girl arrived unharmed and that the assailants had tried to drug her but the treatment failed before taking effect.
Seven applicants appeared at the Elk Hart army recruiting station Tuesday. Three were accepted: Frank O. Simmons of Grand Rapids, Roy Wyland and George Pryor of Elkhart. Two were rejected for illiteracy, one for hernia, and one for defective sight. The illiteracy rejections were described as excellent physical specimens who could not read or write.
On charges that he is a pest and danger to the neighborhood, the South Bend city court was asked to dispose of cases against Pat Brennan who lives in a shack. Mrs. Mary Brennan filed charges alleging he is a cripple who refuses county aid and prefers begging from kitchens.
D M Coen of the Merchants National Bank South Bend addresses the banking class at the South Bend Business College to discuss banking questions and present the bank's official statement. Mrs Coen, formerly Mildred Spitler of Rensselaer, is well known in Goshen.

Seventeen year old Harry Robinson, a war-saw youth from a local home, ran away to join the United States navy, pursuing enlistment.

Frederick S. Fish estimates the J. M. Studebaker estate at 5 million dollars in probate records filed in St Joseph circuit court. The will leaves about 60 percent of the value to immediate family and household staff, with major bequests to Trinity Presbyterian Church and George M. Witwer. Witwer receives 25 thousand dollars and 500 shares. long time staff get smaller cash bequests.
A letter to Michele Ronzone, Italian grocer in Elkhart, reports 15 local Italian volunteers have died in the war over the past year. Dominick Reilley and 14 others from the Elkhart Italian colony were killed while serving in the trenches.
Orvay Myers aged about 10, son of Mr and Mrs Oliver S Myers of West Oak Ridge avenue, died yesterday afternoon at home after illness. Survived by parents and two younger brothers Anthony and Argus. Funeral services tomorrow at 2:30 PM at the home, burial in Oak Ridge.

At Kankakee Judge Merrill ruled that Lottie Ely was not legally married to the late John Hess of South Bend and therefore not his heir. The finding stems from a suit by Hess parents challenging a $2,000 bequest to Hess second wife from the estate.

Mrs. Anna Moyer age 79 died at her son John Moyer's home seven miles southwest of Goshen in Harrison township after a fall and prolonged illness. Widow of Abraham J. Moyer she leaves four daughters Mrs. Singer Mrs. Buzzard Mrs. Brenziey and Miss Anna Moyer and two sons John and M L Moyer plus 12 grandchildren. Funeral services Saturday at 10 am from home and 11 am at Yellow Creek church with Rev. J A Stump and Rev. Vernon Stump officiating. Burial Yellow Creek cemetery.
Local high school candidates for the Northern Indiana Oratorical contest to be held in Gary on May 12 are Walter Kester Russell Stambaugh William Latta Raymond Cosbey and John Gunther. Girls will choose their representative in coming weeks. Judges will heard short talks next week to decide the winner.

Henry Ort of South Bend underwent a second operation in two years at Epworth hospital, his left leg below the knee amputated. His right leg was amputated two years ago. Ort suffers from diabetes and the condition stems from his legs necessitating the amputations.
A Goshen Indiana lamp maker Novelty and Brush Co. is extolled by a salesman in a large eastern city for producing the finest lamps in the world. A former Goshen woman admired the lamp on display and learned its origin.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o clock from the late residence 312 E Clinton street and 2 30 from the West Goshen church. Rev William Hess assisted by Rev Stutzman will officiate. Interment will follow at West Side cemetery.

Hoy Stockberger formerly of Milford and a Purdue graduate has passed a critical exam and been commissioned a first lieutenant. Merrill Chatten of Milford, a Purdue student who was hospitalized for several weeks with scarlet fever, remains in Milford and will not return to the University this term.
Mrs Elizabeth Delcamp age 8 2 years is seriously sick at 411 Summit street. Kenneth son of Charles W Myers at 502 South Fifth street has a very light attack of scarlet fever. Lud Miller is in a critical condition at the home of his son Harry Miller on the North Side. Mrs Laura A King is unchanged. Samuel Clayton of Milford is very ill at the home of his son Scott Clayton at Silver Lake.
