Benham Dead at Ninety One A Pioneer Hotel Keeper
Richard D. Benham aged nearly 91 and a 62 year resident of Elkhart county died Sunday at the home of his daughter Mrs John Wurster on Madison street after about a year of illness. He was an early Goshen hotel keeper and pioneer figure born August 25, 1818 in Hoopsville New York. He married Martha Stewart May 26 1839 and came to Elkhart county in 1849. Funeral arrangements are noted for Wednesday at the Wurster home with interment in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Last night a major fire of unknown origin gutted the Smith shoe store in Warsaw's central business district with losses around 15 000 dollars. Edward Smith, owner, was away in Marion and returned as the fire peaked. insured for about 8600 dollars. The building was insured for 3000 by Ham Hetfield. Dickey and Sons dry goods next door suffered smoke damage. The blaze threatened the district and Goshen and Winona officials offered aid and equipment.

Death of Former Resident Jasper N. Matthews
Jasper Newton Matthews died at Plymouth last Thursday. Born in Elkhart County in 1845 he married Sarah C. Fudge in 1868. His sister Mrs. Lucinda Cline of Milford survives.

Sunday Evening Blaze At Cottage Avenue House
Firemen rushed to a Cottage Avenue and Reynolds Street home near 8 pm and battled flames leaping from the roof of a frame house owned by L H Barbauh and used by Wm Bandelier. Damage were limited to the roof and one wall with minimal water loss to contents. Fire believed started by a chimney spark. both building and contents insured and loss to be adjusted this afternoon.
