Jury acquits Middlebury man in larceny case at Bontrager store

Charles Lehman Middlebury constable and school teacher is acquitted of larceny for the Bontrager store burglary. Jury verdict opened at 9 am followed by a sealed 10:10 pm verdict. State witnesses Shed Ecker and Ed Shaner face punishment for alleged pretrial conspiracy. Prosecution expected conviction but defense praised Lehman’s character and alibi.

Noble county schools candidates narrowed after Keehn withdrawal

Prof Roy D Keehn withdraws as superintendent candidate for Noble county schools to continue studies at Chicago University. Remaining contenders are Prof W A Fox Albion Prof F H Hersh Avilla and Prof W A Beane Ligonier high principal. Miss Gordon to Lead Children’s Meeting at Local Church

Miss Gordon will conduct a children’s meeting in the lecture room of the First M E church this evening from 7 to 9. All children and young people of all ages are invited. Married by Justice Luther Linde yesterday, William H. Rigga of Lakeville Indiana wed Miss Laura Thorpe of South Bend. They will live at Lakeville. Eggs have fallen from 5% to 14 cents per dozen. Engineer Cook surveyed the Boozer Bros and Kilgore dam near Benton with $25 000 to be spent. Frank Hope named substitute for rural route No 4 and training with Carrier Kercher. The W C T U members also noted.

The Ben Hur dance and card party drew strong attendance with Beverle and Wolf providing music. Mrs Susan Bechtel and Eli Wagner wed at the Bridges home in Wakarusa with Rev Swartz officiating. Master Hubert Knight marked his 12th birthday with a Fifth Avenue M E church Sunday class gathering and a musical program. The Warsaw Winona electric line power house site is chosen, cost over 125000, five motors and three trailers planned, with 25000 more for rolling stock. The Mount Memorial building contract for 60000 was awarded to J A Schumacher Co, three stories high of pressed brick, ready by September 1.

Burns at tailor shop injures Samuel Trump in Elkhart

A gasoline clean up at the F E Trump tailoring establishment left Samuel Trump badly burned across his face and singed hair. Doctors say wounds cover most of the face but are not deep and he will stay at home for several days under care. The report also notes a Ligonier girl Bernice Herald injured from a fall, Chicago death of Mrs. Frank Kimball, and local business and family notices including a large dam mortgage filing and a family reunion plan near Elkhart on June 4.

Lake Shore inspection of Elkhart yards and new locomotives

Lake Shore officials led by W H Marshall and others inspected the Elkhart yards to assess enlargement plans, with a proposed freight cut off from the western entrance to Allendale or Yellow Creek. The Baldwin Locomotive Works will deliver 30 engines by August 1, including passenger and switch engines, and the 700 and 1000 series will have readiness adjustments. Mrs May Bird of Elkhart partially settles a $20,000 claim over a death at Sodus, Mish.

Deiver Prevents Wreck On Lincoln Avenue

Ed Hatfield driving the baggage wagon west on Lincoln avenue avoided a collision when an unknown lady backed a car into his path. Hatfield vaulted to the ground, injuring himself lightly and preventing a wreck. Also notes on local electric railway plans, real estate purchases, and other Goshen items.
