Special dispatches from London and Washington on March 14 report heavy German reinforcements arriving at Verdun. The German bombardment continues and the Swiss German frontier is closed. Italian artillery activity increases along the Isonzo front signaling potential major action.
Brig. Gen. George Bell Jr., commander of the Fifth brigade, is ordered to New Mexico to relieve Gen. Pershing at Columbus. Mexican reports say Villa altered plans and may again stand against the American expedition at Otijos Pass in the Western Sierra in Chihuahua.
Fire originating in the roof completely destroyed the Stutsman school house four miles west of Gosh en Basher Chapel at noon today. The school was in session and pupils and teacher Charles Wallace were unaware until warned by passersby. No injuries were reported as neighbors fought the blaze, but the brick structure was a total loss.
Persistent Mishawaka chatter centers on the Eberhart financial interests with no official statement issued. Early reports suggest Mishawaka books were not caught for large sums, though details remain unclear.

Indianapolis March 14 Special Governor Ralston approved W. H. Hart of Indianapolis as the Republican member of the state board of tax commissioners to succeed Eben H. Wolcott. Hart will serve April 1 to December 1 with a $5000 salary. he is 68, Civil War veteran, former state auditor, and a longtime friend of the Governor. He previously worked as a newspaper man in Lafayette and Frankfort and was appointed third auditor of the U S Treasury by President Harrison.
Will not discuss position of delegates to Indiana Progressive convention on including Hanly temperance views in platform. Hanly recently returned from a temperance lecture and faces expected opposition from delegates. nomination appears unlikely.
Manitoba voters approve a provincial temperance act by a two to one margin. The measure closes all bars wholesale liquor houses and licensed clubs in the province after May 31 next.
Vice President Marshall has returned to the capital after completing a western journey. He arrived this morning to resume duties and address ongoing national affairs.
Dentists and physicians of St. Joseph county held a joint meeting and banquet at the Oliver hotel in South Bend last night Dr William G H Logan of Chicago gave the principal address with stereopticon slides urging cooperation. Rumors claim bootlegging is active in Goshen with whiskey coming from Elkhart in half pints. Two outsiders reportedly arrived last night with a suitcase full of bottles as investigators look into the matter.
Frederick YW Morrice formerly city editor of Goshen News Times and later at Sheboygan Journal and Press is now city editor of Canton Daily Register in Canton Ohio. Mrs Morrice will join him there and he reports satisfaction with the new position.

Otis Weldon Ryan, 15, son of Mr and Mrs J P Ryan of Elkhart 520 Oakland Ave sang at English Lutheran and Reformed churches in Goshen on Sunday. His soprano renditions God Will Wipe Away All Tears and The Mother's Prayer drew large crowds invited by Arthur Poissant World Purity Federation secretary.
Lillie Brackett McDonald widow of Danie McDonald noted Indiana mason and former Plymouth resident died in Chicago. The body was moved to Rock Island Illinois for interment. Daniel McDonald, once editor of the Plymouth Democrat, was buried at Plymouth on January 12 while Mrs. McDonald was seriously ill and could not accompany him.
Ed Walsworth plans to open horse training quarters at the fair grounds soon. He has long been connected with racing and now appears on tracks in this region. He expects to manage many horses this year with assistance from his brother Frank.

Brake works at a Chicago Detroit Bag factory. The wedding is set for September. The Bay View club was hosted by Mrs H B Bartholomew at Mrs R Browne's home on South Seventh Street. The O G Club will gather this evening at Mrs Roy Burkett's home on Plymouth Avenue.
Miss Annie B H Slate moved to her residence at 713 South Sixth Street which she bought from Frank A Osborn of Los Angeles Cal The former Hughes place at 108 South Sixth Street vacated by Slate was sold to C Edward Avke who will occupy it soon as they vacate the Spohn house at 518 South Fifth Street
When the ice on Shipshewana lake broke, Dr William Gabel, Charles Kollar, and Harry Ludwig plunged into icy water. They battled the cold for about 45 minutes before reaching shore safely, with all three men escaping drowning.

The third annual corn poultry and egg show will be held at Middlebury High School on March 16 and 17. Thursday features a 1 30 afternoon program with talks readings and demonstrations including bread baking and table setting, plus a 7 30 evening program with poultry lecture and music. Friday concentrates on judging and more talks readings and music by local and visiting speakers and groups. The premium list is noted as very attractive.

The Northern Indiana Telephone Association started schools of instruction for long-distance operators. The first session was in Plymouth with fifty operators from Ft Wayne, Warsaw, Columbia City, Valparaiso, South Bend, Knox, Nappanee and nearby towns. W S Vivian of Chicago spoke, Mrs William Bernhardt of South Bend organized and led, and three small switchboards hosted drills. A two day school will be held every three months.
James E. Watson remains active in politics and will place his name before the Indianapolis convention next month as a candidate for the United States Senate. The veteran statesman continues to campaign amid shifting party dynamics and expects a spirited ballot.
