Frank Howland was arraigned on assault with intent to kill, pleads not guilty and a trial date set for March 25. Mrs Bessie Howland bond as a witness fixed at 500 dollars, she hopes for liberty soon. Carroll shows improvement at Ash Hospital, prognosis uncertain, may leave him paralyzed.
The Commercial Exchange committee on Jefferson theatre reconstruction met to plan a canvass for the subscription sale of first night tickets. Seats cost 10 dollars, with 5 dollars seats available later. Harvey A. Banta will buy 100 dollars worth, and the sale is expected to fill the house. By this afternoon 600 dollars in tickets had been sold, with the Mur d ocks and H. S. Dickey each purchasing 100 dollars.
Sick List reports C. C. Latta improving after returning from Chicago with an ear abscess. Mrs. W. H. Miller remains seriously ill. W. D. Platter has recovered from a recent illness. Harry Leaming returns home from Crawfordsville where he attends Wabash College and is convalescing. Miss Anna Miller is able to go out after months of illness.
The National Dairy Machine company operates with 55 workers and faces a backlog as demand grows. Management plans to rapidly increase the force to meet orders, aiming to add staff as soon as possible.
City streets are in very poor state with mud filling crosswalks making pedestrians struggle. Tug Neese of Milford was in Goshen today observing the conditions.
Indianapolis March 12 The house adjourned sine die without reconsidering the metropolitan police bill and the Farver insurance bill both killed by Gov. Hanly veto. Police and insurance measures failed for reconsideration.
Tomorrow morning the defense in the St Joseph Elkhart superior court in a junction suit must file its answer while motions to dismiss are pending. Several cases were dismissed including quiet title and probate disputes. A judgment in the Indiana Nat Bank St. Joseph Hydraulic note case was adjusted to 1 894 34 dollars. The Hart vs L S M S Co suit began. jurors were told to render for the defense after the plaintiff rested. A truancy case involving a 13 year old was referred to the probation officer. Discharges and real estate sales across the docket were also noted.
About 20 members met at Dr. W. O. Vallette's office to set arrangements for the new season. Officers were re-elected with W. Jack Latta as president and P. R. Judkins as vice president. Frank Kelly named general manager of the grounds. A transportation committee was formed to seek service from the Indianapolis line to Goshen. Membership fees were set at 10 dollars for men 5 dollars for women and under 18. Clergy to receive free membership. The season opens April 15. last year the club had 68 members.
Gov Hanly signed a new law making wife desertion a felony with penalties from two to twenty one years. It allows requisition to return a deserter from another state and targets men who abandon families. Elkhart county is cited as a past fertile field for enforcement.
Weather is expected to open to allow major projects in Goshen. The Jefferson theatre and business rooms are slated for reconstruction, the courthouse renovation proceeds, and about 75 new homes may be built this summer. The Goshen Syracuse electric line and Purl Street paving will boost activity, with contractors busy and labor in demand.

In closing the South Bend estate of the late Renatus H. Duey the widow Athelia Duey disposed of the Duey flats to W Schuyler Robertson for 40000 dollars. Mrs Duey formerly Mrs O N Lambert wife of the Elkhart street car man and insurance promoter. She divorced Kim. Mr Duey and his first wife now dead were known in Goshen as musicians.
Scores of new pleasure crafts will be placed on the St Joseph river at Elkhart in the spring. Elkhart dealers have had a flood of orders. Since the construction of the Hen Island dam an excellent river is afforded below Elkhart and its popularity is apparent.
A group from Goshen and Elkhart counties will depart for Colorado next week to take up homestead claims near Limon. The party includes W. B. Lehman, John W. Cornell, and James Gardner the barber, with David D. Rodibaugh and M. A. Cornell accompanying for a prospecting trip.
Jake Stahl the former Washington manager is in Elkhart due to his mother's illness. The veteran baseball figure remains in limbo about returning to big league play this season.

Postoffice officials in Indianapolis last week forwarded a large batch of unmailable postcards to the dead letter office under a new general order. The ornate cards, embossed and decorated with metal and glass, lacked valid addresses, and many had no return address. Some offensive novelties were seized from New York and held for Goshen, reflecting strict discipline to protect stamping machines.
Samuel A. Williamson writes from Calumet Michigan about the copper region dubbed the copper country. He notes Calumet is the largest village with a town board instead of a mayor and describes the Copper King Calumet & Hecla mines with high profits. Test judged satisfactory. plans call for two, possibly three passenger cars daily Warsaw to South Bend and return.
Several street corner lamps are poorly lit or dark. The Seventh and Main junction lamp is out, and the Highth and Madison lantern is useless. North Side residents urge a light at Cottage avenue crossing of the Lake Shore to curb accidents and robberies.
The 14 year old son of Wm Sheets and a companion named Flowers ran away Sunday then returned last night. Fear had spread they went to Chicago, but they were found in Elkhart. They slept in a livery stable, had no food, and returned hungry. The Sheets boy is employed by Banta Furniture and regarded as industrious.
J. J. Shaw, a Republican with ties to the organization, returns to duty as a Lake Shore switchman in Elkhart after sixty days spent in Indianapolis influencing state legislation.
A meeting will be held in Goshen tomorrow to decide on organizing the Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan baseball league. Current members include Mishawaka, Goshen, Elkhart, Syracuse, and Dowagiac, Mich. Three more towns are needed.
Frank McClellan of Benton Harbor Michigan was struck and killed instantly by a street car. It is claimed he was intoxicated and wandering on the tracks. He was 48 years old.
J. J. Shaw, prominent Elk hart figure, states that A. R. Beardsley is an aspirant to succeed A. L. Brick in congress. The remark places Beardsley among potential candidates amid electoral talk in the region.

Miss Levina Wahl was the guest of Dr and Mrs Dobson of Goshen. Mrs John B H Rigney has gone to Kalamazoo to visit her sister. Prof J S Hartzler returned from Topeka where he had been visiting. Mrs E B Smith of Niles is here to visit her parents. Cr H Smith of Kalamazoo visited J W Smith's family and returned home. D F Cartmell formerly of this city but now in Middlebury township was here on business yesterday. Harry Freyberg came home from Ligonier to visit his parents. Thomas Catchpole arrived from Toledo to join National Dairy Machine Co. R A Hartzler and J S Yoder from Topeka were here to purchase a light plant. Moses B Cripe left for Carpio North Dakota on a prospecting trip to visit his daughter. Byron Kauffman arrived from Detroit and may remain to visit his parents in Middlebury.
The Beacon Lights ladies held an entertainment focused on Reciprocity Day at the home of Dr and Mrs W O Vallette. Five women from South Bend and Mishawaka read papers while Mrs BE Kettling showcased Japanese lacquer work and souvenirs.
Despite a legislative failure to strip police appointing powers from Gov. Hanly, Charles Silvers remains Elk Hart police chief and Hikhart will head Tight Town for two more years. Hanly supporters vow to prevail.
The Elkhart Water Company and Clark and Trainor of Chicago responded to inquiries from the Elkhart board of public works regarding the new water supply contract. The contract has not been awarded as yet.
