The Rohrer divorce case drew about 300 spectators as Mahion H. Rohrer testified four hours denying charges. Evidence on farm value and alimony emerged while family members and court officials watched closely.
Louis Hill aged 15 died of leukaemia at 4 40 pm Monday, the fourth Hill child to die in three weeks. Gladys, 9, died Sunday. A double funeral is planned for Wednesday at 2 30 pm at First English Lutheran Church with interment in Oak Ridge. The family, reliant on a paper carrier, awaits blood analysis from Indianapolis.
A 19 year old named Harry Prough was accidentally shot while handling a 38 caliber revolver at the county infirmary this morning. The bullet passed through his clothing and lodged just under the skin of his belly though his condition is not serious. Hospitals and doctors from Goshen and Elkhart attended. Library board to elect a librarian tonight with several candidates named and pay around 50 dollars monthly plus an assistant librarian to be chosen.
Alva Gardner, despondent for days, entered O. J. Beeson’s drug store yesterday to buy laudanum. The proprietor refused the sale. Gardner left, stating he would end his troubles. Relatives are closely watching him.
Attorney W L Stonex visits Milford and Warsaw as talks consider a Goshen to Fort Wayne railway touch point to replace a Syracuse route after a 20000 subsidy vote. A formal announcement is expected soon. Thunderstorms and rain hit the area this morning. The Dutch market at First M E church offers refreshments and homemade candies with a gentle supper. The Young Ladies Missionary Circle of the Presbyterian church meets at Miss Mabel Simmons home on Wednesday at 2 30 PM.
Elias Binkley 77, a Goshen resident, was struck by Big Four No. 24 while crossing the Rock Run bridge near Main Street. He died two hours later from head injuries after the train appeared to strike him and throw him about 20 feet. Engineer J B Torrence testified the whistle was blown but the victim did not move. Binkley had known hearing loss and had been near the Banta Furniture site before the accident.
A funeral is planned for Thursday for Mrs. F. H. Woomer and Mrs. W Reed of Pueblo, and Mrs. F. C. Jester of Chicago. The deceased include three brothers David of Los Angeles John of Buffalo Uriah of LaSalle and one sister Mrs. Henry Witmer of South Seventh Street.
Loyal Life Insurance Co has gone out of business and will transfer in force policies to the I O F Co of Pennsylvania. Goshen readers received Philadelphia contracts showing higher rates. Policyholders may transfer up to the policy value covered by Loyal Life assessments. new insurance is required for additional sums. Some holders, including Dr. C L Dreese with $590.40 paid, may choose to drop policies rather than pay higher assessments.
Col. John C. Wingate, a poet philosopher and tax commissioner, recalls quitting tobacco when he was young before marriage. He notes he was an inveterate chewer years ago but has not touched the weed since. The LaPorte Herald reports his remark.
Mike Curtain Bob Fleming and Roy Souders acquitted of murder will sue the Pennsylvania Railway Co. for 75000 damages. Frank Sprenk a crossing watchman and Capt Stoll of the railway detective service headed a conspiracy against the boys.
W. J. Spruce of Kokomo, former News proprietor, has bought the printing plant once owned by the Courier and Arena at a sheriff's sale for 475 dollars. He plans to ship the outfit to South Bend to start a new newspaper.
Perry Smith son of 8S. H. Smith of this city was seriously injured while loading logs near Barrons California ten days ago and has been confined to bed since. Further particulars are not known at this time. Mr. Smith left Goshen for San Diego and later Barrons.
Capt Willis Olive writes from Honolulu to Mr and Mrs William Uline in Mishawaka describing a stormy sea voyage across the Pacific. He notes nearly all soldiers were sick except him. Fulton circuit court rules superintendents receive necessary office expenses and per diem for days actually employed in school work regardless of county funding.
George Castetter of Waterford Mills attends a district postmasters meeting in South Bend to discuss service matters and to organize the district. Paul Taylor, a young actor, was detained in St Joseph for a $100 board bill from a summer resort debt. Ruth Brown dies in North Second Street household at 1 15 PM of consumption. Delegates from sixty precincts across sixteen townships in Elkhart County were chosen for the county convention in Goshen tomorrow. The race centers on recorder ship between O C Vernon and F B Leaming with Vernon's supporters claiming leads in multiple townships. Contests for commissioners and county offices are noted, with party factions mobilizing through the precincts and Goshen organizers optimistic about Vernon’s nomination.
Claude Mentzer was elected captain of the South Bend High School track team at a meeting of the High School Athletic association, succeeding R. B. Kelly. South Bend defeated Carroll Hall of Notre Dame 48 to 41 with Cotton Eldred and Broedmus starring. The Elkhart Victors plan a season start and Notre Dame joined the Penn relay carnival alongside Yale Harvard Princeton Chicago Wisconsin Cornell Michigan and Columbia.
