Local man strikes gold in Utah mine venture
Hugh L. Berkey son of Rev. Isaac Berkey from Clinton township left Goshen for Ogden Utah two years ago seeking health for his wife. He bought a half share in a gold mine at Kive Point after a large vein was found. The claim rose to thousands in value and a $30 000 offer came in on Saturday with advice to hold for $50 000. He has not decided on a sale. if title passes he will likely return to Highart County. Earl Smith a drayman for Trustee George Cobb fell from his wagon at the east side of court square while collecting ballot boxes, but escaped serious injury. He avoided further harm beyond minor bruises.

Fire and smoke damage hit Pony saloon and alley blaze
Two alarms sounded as Goshen firefighters battled a Pony saloon blaze at 118 West Washington Street. Ars Welty and Bert Smith narrowly escaped a falling chimney while two separate incidents caused damage to the saloon and adjacent property. The rear card room wall blew outward and an east wall burned, with $50 in contents loss and $800 insurance on stock. A second alarm at 5:30 pm spread to the roof, extinguished by local firefighters. John Wiggins owns the property, insured in New York.

Gladys Hill nine, daughter of Mr and Mrs W A Hill of Garfield avenue, died Sunday at 3 am of leucaemia the disease which afflicted other Hill children in the past month. Louis Hill fifteen remains critically ill and may not survive. Funeral for Gladys will be Tuesday at 2:30 pm. Doctors Becknell Cook Kreider Edmands and Dreese attended. Blood analysis sent to Indianapolis proved unsatisfactory and another specimen will be forwarded. Contagion is not believed, though the family’s cluster of deaths prompts caution.
