City council considers six bids for paving 7th Street with asphalt brick and related work. City engineer prepares official tabulation while property owners on Chicago Avenue seek wider frontage. A small petition is presented by concerned residents.
Goshen firm W. W. Hatch & Sons warns of brick scarcity affecting Seventh street paving costs around 52000 under Hatch proposal. Lafayette’s Western Construction bids 53000 for asphalt while S. S. Saxon Co. Chicago offers a lower bid not fully in line with city specs. Property owners may petition within ten days. view on brick versus asphalt remains divided.
In regular session the seven member common council, led by Mayor Spahn, heard six bids for paving Seventh Street from the New York Central tracks to Main Street and adjourned to review official engineer tabulations. Bidders included H P Streicher Co, Western Construction Co, S S Saxon. one bid from L A Seaman lacked required non-collusion form. Three petitions sought brick with six inch sand and gravel foundations, and Third Street paving moves to start anew with a widened foundation option.
Adair Indiana Democrat and gubernatorial hopeful will be paired with Wilson in supporting the motion to table the McLemore resolution warning passengers about armed ships. Outcome depends on whether Rep. Gillop is paired. no word on his stance due to absence.
Washington March 7 Special Cantrill of the Rules Committee refuted claims that Indiana primary elections influenced the postponement of the McLemore resolution. He said no reference to the Indiana primaries had been made during committee deliberations and stressed the procedural focus.
In the decisive house vote the administration carried the previous question 256 to 160, blocking further debate on a warning to citizens against travel on armed merchant ships and preventing an amendment to the McLemore resolution.
Oliver Anglemeyer of near Nappanee died at his home after a prolonged illness from consumption. A farmer, he leaves a wife, two children, his parents Frank and Mrs Anglemeyer, five brothers, and two stepsisters. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at the brick church in Union township with burial there.
Deputy Bowser reports Elizabeth Trainor known as Bessie and daughter of Mr and Mrs John Trainor of North Tenth street is missing from home aged 16. She and her lover Big Knight aged 30 a member of the Tipperary Boys bought tickets for St Joseph Michigan.
J. J. Densmore of Benton Harbor Michigan arrived today to oversee his family’s move to Goshen. He will manage the Morris 5 and 10 Cent store occupying the remodeled No 127 South Main Street building with a bazaar department for higher priced goods. The Morris company serves as wholesalers for 100 stores and owns 18 retail establishments.
Indiana dispatch notes about 30 percent of Elkhart County voters taking part in the first primary with little local interest. Canvassing to begin at 6 pm, listing officials and party lines, as Goodrich favored for governor and New for senator among Republicans.
Lodema Sanders of Elkhart died in Detroit Michigan after kidney operation that was reported as successful but caused heart failure. She was about 60, widow of coal dealer Jacob P Sanders, mother of Clyde Sanders of Detroit and Mrs Leo Ensing of Allegan, with a sister Mrs Chloe Kauffman and brother Tie Clark. Funeral plans to be announced.
Two meetings are planned tomorrow at 6 p m for the First M E church Sunday school board with a snpper to be served. Rev R K Wade of Elkhart Goshen district superintendent will give a general address on Sunday School Work. The fourth quarterly conference follows at 7 p m with Wade presiding and department heads presenting reports. Election of officers is scheduled. The Northern Indiana M E annual conference will be in Fort Wayne starting March 29.
A fleet of twenty five German warships was observed in the North Sea. Further German advances were reported in the Verdun region west of the Meuse. Deaths from the Spanish steamer Principe de Asturias near Santos were expected to reach about five hundred.
Clingdaniel, plaintiff, sues C. S. B. and N. I. Co. in Kosciusko circuit court for 5000 dollars alleging injuries from an January 18 1914 incident on a Northern Indiana inter urban car. He says the conductor forced him from the rear platform after insisting the fare be paid at five cents. He claims the conduct was boisterous rude and oppressive and caused serious injuries.
About 350 striking brass instrument workers in Elkhart band factories met in a two day conference chaired by Mayor Smith. Reportedly, arrangements may be made for a swift return to work following the discussions.

Society notes report the Novelty Dancing club's opening dance at Jefferson hall on St Patrick's night March 17 with spot lights and decorations. Miss Goldie Himebaugh entertains the Silent Builders class at North Main home. O G Club hosted by Mrs. Herman Roscoe on South Seventh Street. Delta Phi girls hosted by Miss Marie Dundy at East Pearl Street. Bernice Elliott entertained the Tri Kappa sorority at North Main Street.
Few groups including women's clubs cooperate with Indiana Conservation Department and national agencies in a baby campaign that ends Saturday. The effort involves the Indiana Federation the General Federation and the Children’s Bureau as partners.
A masked man entered Melvin Hun ter’s grocery in Elkhart and pointed a revolver at 18 year old Walter Garl who was alone. He stole $150 from the cash drawer as Garl was ordered to stay still. The robber commanded Garl to remain in motionless on penalty of death while holding up the cashier.
J. S. Gerrip of Wayne county C and Silas Yoder with D. D. Troyer of Clinton township teach at the Clinton A. M. church Bible conference. Attendance is large as meetings run to a close Friday.
Citizens asked the county commissioners to build a footbridge over the St. Joseph river at Ninth street. The request was refused with the board declaring the city, not the county, should provide the structure.

Mrs William A Wickham aged 45 died at her home in South Bend after a brief illness with pleurisy. She was well known locally, visiting here often. She is survived by her husband Dr Wickham and a son of the late Dr W W Wickham of Goshen. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Mrs W B Kreider of this city is a sister of Dr Wickham.
Fred Gygi a laborer living in Hikharck was arrested for assault and battery on Peter Shvick’s complaint. Police say Gygi drunk attacked his wife, who fled to Shvick for protection. Gygi followed, allegedly knocked Shvick down when he intervened, and was released after sobering to assist his family.
Present at tomorrow’s hall meeting for a wood craft demonstration with 25 choppers guided by the degree team. A social session follows featuring F. W. Miller and C. C. Miller the big cat.
