City council voted five to two to acquire Mrs Nina Meyers lot at Third and Jefferson for a city hall and central fire station. The purchase totals 4350 with 350 cash and 4000 in 5 percent certificates due 1913, while opposition argued against a south of Lincoln location for a central fire station.
The council bought Mrs Mina Meyers property for 4350 dollars with support from Armour Leidner Knox Smith and Young and opposition from Cripe and Rimpler. It set April 3 as the bid opening date for North Main street paving. It amended sidewalk rules requiring cement rough finished walks six feet wide set one foot from the property line and clarified liquor license fee matters under the new act.
Mayor Spohn presided over a one hour meeting with all seven councilmen and key officials in attendance. Actions include permits for electric signs, moving a shop, a new fire alarm box, street sweeper purchase, and a North Main paving contract with bids to open April 8. Financials show treasury balances and a sinking fund.
Charles H. Snorf completes negotiations to dispose of his interest in the Stephenson Snorf Co to Robert Hudson of Columbia City. Hudson Dry Goods proprietor will move to Goshen soon. The company will be incorporated with 30000 dollars capital. Snorf remains in Goshen for now.
Lou Ogle residing southeast of the city on the Dierdorff farm has received a pair of mulefoot pigs from Kansas. They are claimed to be resistant to cholera.
Colored Socialist groups in Elkhart arrange for a Sunday speech by Mr. Garrison a colored orator from Monticello Ind The local socialists will likely host him in Elkhart the night before the Sunday event
A socialist group plans to start a Goshen paper and notes coverage for those missed in the distribution of their big sale bills. The announcement invites readers to attend a reading at the local meeting.
The supervising architect of the treasury will begin in June the sketches for the Laporte and Bloomington post office buildings. Work on the Elwood building sketches will start in May and Goshen in June, marking initial Indiana projects.
United States Senator John W. Kern arrived from Washington at noon and visited the Indiana legislature in the afternoon. He addressed both houses briefly, paid respect to the members, and wished them happiness in the years to come.
Senator Shively will depart Washington tomorrow for Indiana with a stop at Brookville to visit Mrs Shivelys relatives. Representative Barnhart has returned to Rochester from the capital.
Many Indiana counties yesterday set the saloon limit at one to 1,000. A few counties set the limit at one to 500.
Mrs Walter Brown wife of a North Side resident was found dead by her husband after a night of illness described as acute stomach trouble with heart neuralgia. A lifelong Elkhart county resident and Methodist, she leaves husband Dayton and Edward, both in Grand Rapids, Mich, daughter Mrs Wm Mishler of New Madrid, Mo, and sister Mrs J B Vesey of Mansdale Tenn. Funeral arrangements not yet made.
Rev. Leander Keyser D D of Canal Dover was elected successor to the late Rev. Ss A Ort L L D at a Wittenberg College board meeting. Keyser previously taught at Middlebury and served as pastor of Grace Lutheran in Elkhart and spoke in the city on several occasions, with many friends here.
Noble County commissioners set apportionment at one saloon per 800 residents, granting six licenses in Kendallville and two in Avilla. Additional county elections ordered for March 27. Saloons opened at Kendallville and Ligonier yesterday. Tomorrow at 1 p m 100 six ft ladders offered at 35 cents each cash only no delivery. Only one ladder per buyer. Hawks Hardware Co.
Voters are set to decide on closing the Goshen post office with over 900 ballots cast Sunday and results showing overwhelming support for the closure!
Attention to every member. Urged full attendance in uniform this Wednesday evening March 8 by order of the Captain.
The Indiana General Assembly adjourned with laughter as the House, led by Speaker Veneman, adjourned sine die at 12:02 a m after Rep. Thornton and others joined in. The Senate followed at 11:59 p m on Senator Yarling's motion. Gov Marshall signed 83 bills including child labor and apportionment measures while vetoing five involving former county officials.
Senate refused to dismiss the conference committee, ending the Grube referendum bill after a late effort by Senator Grube to overturn house amendments. The chamber also killed the McGinnis tenement measure, ending related action for the night.
An official Feb 18 1911 report from the Elkhart County board of charities and corrections notes the infirmary faces fire danger absent repairs and the Elkhart city jail is not properly cleaned. The board lists members including Dr A C Yoder Eunice Stonex Fanny H Mc Cracken Louise Helfrich George Rowe and Dr H A Barbour.
The Meyers lot purchase ordinance was delivered to Mayor Spahn who has ten days to sign or veto it. If he does not sign it becomes a veto automatically. The council can override the veto with a two thirds vote, which carried the ordinance last night.
Miss Undine Andrews, the season’s biggest hit, performs talking and singing soubrette at the Irwin tonight. An ad line about glasses sparked chatter, with Hawks Hardware Co. noted in the snippet.
The estate of John Werner was formally closed as executor Frank A. Hascall was ordered to pay legacies totaling amounts to Goshen churches lodges and individuals. The estate valued at about 40 000 included farm sales and a Goshen residence bequeathed to a local church, with the Mishawaka Orphans Home receiving nothing due to unpaid legacies.
Capt William Miner Barney aged about 86 died at his son Clark H. Barney’s home near Bristol after illness. Born July 6, 1825 in Willsboro New York he helped organize Co B 100th Indiana in the Civil War and served as Elkhart city judge after politics and business in Elkhart. He leaves two sons Clark in Bristol and Dr Lée Barney of Elkhart, plus two brothers. Funeral set at Elkhart cemetery with special interurban car carrying mourners from Bristol.
Mortuary notice reports Amanda f Sailor died at home in Elkhart from dropsy and heart trouble. Funeral services held at Grate Unit Brethren church, Elkhart. Burial planned at Sugar Gisvé old home. Born Sitio August 25, 1844. Survived by sons Oliver of Goshen, Frank, John, Joseph, Charles, Albert, Earl of Elkhart. daughters Mrs. C Brown of South Bend, Mrs. Robert Davis of Elkhart, Mrs. Thomas Pickerel of Cagsopolis.
J B Stoll editor of the South Bend Times is named by Gov Marshall to a North Prison board seat with compensation of 300 dollars yearly. He succeeds R C Houston who resigned to become deputy bank examiner. Other directors listed include F E Beard Attica M E Foley Indianapolis and H R Koffel Knox. The post was offered to Stoll previously in 1871 but he refused then.
Court action covers Pine Creek and William W Stettler drains with added time to report. Dismissal in Wakarusa Hoop Co. vs Goshen Veneer Co. Judgments include 66.50 for Thomas J. Prickett vs Royal Alford. Guardian reports ordered. Grove divorce case amended. Marriage licenses issued for Hart Stout and Harriet Moore. Probate and commissioners court actions on estates and road vacation plans.
Wise presents paving estimates for North Main street from C C C and St L tracks to Walnut Hill top. Brick costs 11944.50, Creosote Block 18422.50, Asphalt 15830.50, Asphalt Macadam 12590.50. frontage 1885 feet, 6480 square yards paving, 1925 cubic yards excavation. Street width 32 feet.
A local theatre note recalls The Wolf playing at the Jefferson last night after a Goshen run two years ago in fall. The Shu bert s are no longer responsible for the production and the six person cast is required for this show.
The 13th district is realigned under the reapportionment act signed by Gov. Marshall. St Joseph Elkhart Laporte Kosciusko Marshall Starke Fulton counties join the district while Pulaski moves to the 11th. The new district votes in November 1912. Metropolitan police bill for Goshen area died. paving intersection funding bill died.
The 1911 acts will yield a book over 1,000 pages, one fifth larger than the 1909 edition. The prior volume had 189 chapters and 810 pages. The new compilation will include about 030 new laws and several joint resolutions.
Mrs Jane Pollock marked her 70th birthday today at 315 East Plymouth Avenue. Guests including Mr and Mrs J W Rondabaugh of Jackson Township and Mr and Mrs Frank Neff and daughter of Jefferson Township attended. She received 200 post cards and many handsome presents as friends called to offer good wishes.
The Missionary Union of Goshen celebrates fifty years of women in missions with an event at the Baptist church on Wednesday March 5. An afternoon session at 2 30 features devotional exercises business and short talks on the call of womanhood covering India China Korea Persia United States. An evening program at 7 30 includes choruses, prayers, solos, and an address titled The Jubilee by Mrs. Frank Wells of Indianapolis with music by a Ladies Quartette.
At the regular township meeting all trustees except Mr Weaver of Olive who is sick discussed arrangements for the annual county commencement in June. A committee led by County Supt Weaver, Trustee Leer Harrigor township and Trustee Bemenderfer Eikhart township will organize the event. The topic New Laws Passed by the Legislature assigned to Trustee Bristol Bango township was carried over to the next meeting when Trustee Wortinger Clinton township will discuss Poor Farm Subjects.
The executor named in the Rev. Dr. H. L. Vannuys will declined. Henry W. Knapp of Scranton Pa was chosen as executor later. Rev BE A Vannuys, grand nephew of the deceased, was appointed and filed bond for 16000 dollars. Provisions of the will were published previously. The bond was filed and the signing witnesses included Ezra Alten Vannuys Herbert H Gortner and win W Hawks.
