Miss Carrie Powell sues for breach of promise in South Bend
Saturday afternoon Carrie Powell filed a complaint with the county clerk against Lee L. Laman of South Bend alleging breach of promise and damages of 10000 dollars. She says in November 1896 Laman promised to marry her while she was unmarried and over 18, he showed affection and visited often, then refused to marry.

Death in Yoder Miller Store From Apoplexy
William Kircher aged 42 former city resident died suddenly in Yoder Miller's store at 218 South Main about 5 30 p m Saturday. He had been healthy with minor dizzy spells. He collapsed while talking with Mr Yoder and Mr Miller, died without a struggle. Drs Ash and Miller failed to save him. Funeral at German Baptist church tomorrow at 10, Rev Riggle presiding. Burial church cemetery. Mrs Kircher and six children survive. Also notes death of Jacob Yoder 83 near Elkhart prairie. Burial Alwine Cemetery. Matthew Skelly 60 of Elk hart died of gangrene. Chas Mohler of Nappanee died after long illness. Washington report on Spain and Consul General Lee. Property change on South Third Street to James J Gardner. Goshen Democrats to reorganize tonight. City schools close Friday for one week. Young Peoples Aid Society meeting at Mrs Frenk Leibole's home.

Gasoline Fire Injures Wm. Farber at East Lincoln
Wm. Farber a fruit store operator on East Lincoln Avenue was badly burned when a gasoline burner for a peanut roaster ignited. The blaze struck his face and hands as he tried to light the burner, with significant skin peeling on his hands. Dr. A C Jackson treated his injuries and his escape was narrowly earned.

Truant case against John Kidder on education neglect
Affidavit filed in Justice Hattle's court charges farmer John H Kidder with failing to send his daughter Dessie to school for 12 weeks and not complying after notice. Trial set for Saturday at 1 30 pm. Kidder claims the girl attended except Thanksgiving day. Also notes bonds and other local legal actions including a dangerous person affidavit against Charles Kirkendorffer and a G A R cottage appropriation request from Elkhart county officials.

Health Statistics Show 1897 Accidents and Deaths Across Indiana
The Indiana state board of health reports 637 total accidental deaths in 1897 with breakdowns by drowning railway burns and scalds shooting and poisoning. Personal crisis reports reached 110 with 76 men and 34 women. 85 Americans 14 foreigners 12 unknown marital status. Homicides totaled 17 with six in September in Ripley county. The quarterly bulletin notes 6173 marriages and 7776 births in the quarter while 3959 deaths rose 70 from the prior year quarter.
