Lake Shore fireman Charles D. Carroll lies in Ash hospital after three bullets struck him, with doctors unsure when recovery may come. Mrs. Howland remains jailed as a key witness while uncertainty over motive and potential trial outcomes persists.
Officers believe Carroll sought domestic happiness and that Howland hunted him. The brakeman shot to kill following pursuit, raising questions about motive and sequence of events.
Last night at 11 o clock Mrs W A Whippy’s barn burned completely after discovery by Mr and Mrs John Cornell. Firemen saved adjacent buildings though the residence rear caught fire twice. The barn contained sleighs and a speeder. insurance covered only the barn at 300 dollars.
Goshen lodge No 798 B P O Elks meets Thursday to consider buying property for a permanent home after a special committee recommended purchase following the Jefferson fire of December 18 1906. Offered sites include the Smith house North Fifth Street the Dr Peck Bruce place North Main Street and the old Rowell Building at Lincoln Avenue and Third Street. Temporary quarters for the Chicago Fair will remain until action is taken by the lodge.
Goshen audiences will see a five act drama Tony the Convict at the Irwin Friday night performed by Modern Woodmen of America. The show begins at 8 o clock with vaudeville between acts and a 20 cent admission. The two and a half hour program features local cast members Samuel Neeter John Wogeman O J Hughes Geo Rothrock Barton D Hughes Eugene Rader Geo Hamman Delia Scarfos Mrs Marton D Hughes Dora Anglemeyer and Delsie Baker.
The Winona Interurban Railway Co. unveiled a new baggage and express car built in Winona Lake shops. The two fronted car can be operated in either direction and handles freight baggage and express. It will run Warsaw to Goshen now and later extend to South Bend, with four cars planned for local merchant service.
Goshen residents learn Hugh B. Haines son of Howard Haines 318 North Main street was seriously hurt in Chicago enroute to a funeral when a street car struck his carriage. He suffers a deep scalp wound broken right leg above the ankle a bad left leg fracture minor injuries include loosened teeth and a black eye. He will return home when able and damage proceedings will be filed against the street car company.
In South Bend it is stated that a report from the committee handling disbarment against former State's Attorney Kurtz, once of Elkhart Bristol and Middlebury, may be issued this week. The committee has worked long on the report and reportedly examined all details.
Ed Nymeyer and Lou Baker have formed a partnership to perform inside work including painting finishing and decorating and furniture refinishing. They offer services from Leidner Hascall to Hawks Furniture connections and can be reached at 719 on the Home phone.
W A Hoops begins a fine residence project in Chicago and intends to move there with his family next fall. The family will spend summers at Wawasee while Mr Hoops resumes business ventures in Chicago.
Wilson Rood of Harrison township purchases the David B. Nusbaum property at 517 South Sixth street for 3000 dollars and will move to Goshen in August. He has leased his tile factory to John Singer, the former foreman. On January 1, 1908, Rood starts his term as county commissioner succeeding Charles A. Davis of Goshen.
In a dated statement John McNaughton asserts his sister intended to replicate in her will the same provision for Mrs. J A S Mitchell as she did for Mrs. C J Thompson. He confirms that those wishes should be carried out.
Tomorrow at 2 p m Hawks Hardware Co will sell 154 quart preserving kettles at 19 cents each. The kettles are triple coated with a white interior and flaked outside and advertised as bargains.
Edward Caldwell, formerly of Osceola with a 160 acre farm, died February 28 in Malaga New Mexico where he had lived for several years. The remains will be brought back to his Osceola home for burial.
Mr and Mrs Noah Brumbaugh of Waterford celebrate the birth of a daughter born last night the couple said in a family note.
Blough Bros and Mehl open their hardware at a new site described as modernly shelved and improved over the former store. The location is noted as ideal and convenient for customers.

R D Benham is reported quite sick at his home with L H Nusbaum in residence at 1027 South Main Street. Local watcher notes the illness as a private matter with no further medical details provided.

Miss Doering has accepted a position as bookkeeper with the hardware firm Blough Bros. & Mehl. She joins the staff to handle accounts and office duties for the local business.
Seven bids were submitted for paving East Purl street with brick. W. W. Hatch & Sons won the contract after a council vote. The award to Hatch & Sons totaled about 19000 dollars with Metropolitan block used. The meeting also covered minor city business including building permits, lamp purchases, an amended cemetery ordinance, and budget notes.
The Knights and Ladies of Columbia fraternal order, formed in South Bend a decade ago, has ceased to exist. Its unpaid claims totaling 16800 have been re insured with the Loyal Americans of the Republic, based in Springfield Illinois, which may relocate its offices to South Bend after its May convention. Goshen lodge members report ongoing dues and belief the local branch remains intact locally.
The mystery of Frank Holem's disappearance is explained. An employee of the Central Union Telephone Company, he was implicated in wire theft near New Paris but the company now believes it has identified the culprit. Holem may return to his wife and job after the investigation. Mrs. Holem says he has gone west and will send for her.
In the legislature the Beardsley quart shop bill failed to pass the senate yesterday forenoon for want of a constitutional majority. The vote was 25 for and 18 against the measure.
Fire at the William Fuller residence near Yellow Creek lake Kosciusko county engulfed the roof and chimney and consumed the entire farm house while the family slept, leaving nothing but ashes.
Viola Bickford, adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A Walroff of South Bend, disappeared after leaving Tuesday with most of her belongings. She had lived with the Walroffs since age eight and was regarded as family. no trace has been found.
George I Smith reports Elmer Smith and his family left Omaha for Portland after traveling through Nebraska. He notes no snow since leaving home, but abundant rain along the route.
Hazel Eddy was arraigned in Elkhart on a burglary charge and given a 200 dollar bond for circuit court appearance. Her lover Tom Dixon has not been arrested and is implicated by her statement.

MORTUARY RECORD. BRACKETT Mrs Charles Brack ett, 31 died in Elkhart last night. She is survived by her husband two sisters and her mother. WINNEDGE George Vinnedge 50 died in St Joseph Michigan this morning. His wife and one son survive.

The will of Jacob Swartz, who died in Goshen on February 14, 1903, was made December 5, 1903 and probated yesterday. Milo H. Cripe and Amanda Cripe witnessed. executor named is Charles L. Swartzson. The widow Cornelia Swartz inherits for life, then the estate is divided equally among five children Willard E., Nora E., Charles L., Arthur E., and Jennie L. The last heir receives a bad room suit.
