Mrs. Deal F Sweet wins a divorce from Phineas W Sweet with Judge Ferrall approving. Ellen H Barnes sues Endowment Bank K of P over a $1000 policy with an Elkhart judge keeping funds in court. Dr William Armour’s divorce case against Gertrude Armour proceeds amid allegations of abandonment and thefts.
The New Paris high school debating society holds a debate Saturday evening March 7 on the question Reform that Socialism is desirable in the twentieth century. A literary program follows and all are invited. A plan to organize a northern Indiana fair circuit includes North Manchester LaPorte Rochester Huntington Decatur Bourbon Bremen and possibly Wabash. The Kelly Foundry and Machine Company received a sixty inch pulley shipped from Dodge Pulley Works Mishawaka via the interurban.
Telegram from Goshen announces the death of Mrs H L Vannuys born Lillie Loring wife of Rev Dr Vannuys pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. She died at her nephew Dr Harry Logan's home in Beranton Pa at 7 this morning after years of invalidism. Burial will be in Scranton Friday.
Celia M. Bratton of Vietula died at 1 40 AM Monday March 2 after long heart failure and final apoplexy. Dr. Thomas Cammack of Milford, in a somnambulistic state, left a second story window at the Hotel Haya in War Saw and fell to the ground 81 year old doctor bruised but survived with no broken bones.
The valuable brood mare Ruth H. belonging to Clarence Harris died Monday evening at his farm south of the city from injuries suffered by falling on icy roads last week. The mare had a 2:24 trotting and 2:22 pacing record and was bred by F. G. Hubbell fourteen years ago. Funeral notices and local society items follow including services for Mrs Joseph Burnstein and Mrs J. Bimon, a Knights of Columbus social, race notes on Charley Herr, and gatherings at the Pas Ma La club and Baptist women’s group.
William J. Proctor an 81 year old Elkhart resident died at home after a long illness caused by paralysis. Born in Knightstown in 1791 he moved to Elkhart in 1829 and helped build the Mishawaka dam. He is survived by three children and his widow. Funeral for Casper Keyser held at Catholic church with Ancient Order of United Workmen in attendance. Knights Templar will travel by special train to Fort Wayne for Grand Commandery meeting on April 15. Sheriff Manning pursued William Long for contempt of court and Long escaped via window before surrendering at Goshen.
In 1960 the Democrat recounts a 1860 Goshen court house meeting that organized a Democratic club. It lists officers including Dr. A. M. McKinney as President and Julius Waldsmidh and John W. Hagens as vice presidents, plus an extensive list of founding members and signatories from that event.
A baby boy born to Mr and Mrs Samuel Schafer four miles west this morning. The South Bend Times outlines the Hansche Behwartz elopement noting Hansche's musical work and dental supply venture with his Chicago office at 1008 Memorial Block, plus the couple's prominent Richmond Indiana family ties and German community connections through Mies Schwartz.
A. J. Stephenson, longtime Goshen resident and Lake Shore conductor, died at Council Bluffs Iowa at 7 30 yesterday morning aged 70. He moved to Warsaw in the hardware business in the 1860s and left Warsaw in 1868 to the west. He is survived by three daughters and two sons. The body will be interred beside his wife at Milford. Mayme Stephenson will come from Council Bluffs to live with her sister Mrs M E Meader.
The remains of Mrs. C. C. Shafer died in Denver arrived in Goshen at 4 56 today. The funeral will be private Thursday at 8 p m at J. P. Shafer's home two miles west of Goshen burial in Oak Ridge. A note on April 12 mentions Easter and the Jewish Passover overlapping in rare timing.
The Burt hotel in Decatur now employs boys as waiters in its dining room. Seymour Owen 54 died Saturday at his Kendallville area home. Miss Cleo Clusser Huntington hurt by coffee pot explosion. Mrs. John Confer oldest woman in Wells township Os sian died Saturday aged over 87. Boyd Hamer Kendallville attacked Night Policeman Barnett. self defense left Hamer with a non fatal arm wound. Elopement tale from Silver Lake features De Von Getty and Ruth Arnold aged seven and six years.
The resignation of F C Raff of South Bend as superintendent of the nree I division of the Lake Shore railroad is effective. His successor is H A Ziesel of Chicago, who will assume the Three I duties along with Lake Shore responsibilities. Raff will focus on Ruff & Bilge Oolitic Stones Co, in which he is heavily involved. Ziesel previously lived in Elkhart and served as county councilman before his Chicago appointment.
Soo City will on that date go into commission on the St. Joseph Chicago route. The Big Four expects to eclipse all previous records this year on Chicago travel by Lake Michigan.
The Democrat reports efforts to revive Indiana National Guard with a recruiting push, arguing service equals three years of virtual slavery to protect trusts. It warns governors and guardsmen would answer to the general, potentially deploying soldiers against workers and strikes, with little real reward for soldiers.
