Major General Pershing lauds American troops in France noting no losses or serious illness during transport. He commends their health and appearance, calls the landing a complete success, and thanks France for cooperation in providing barracks, beds, food, and sanitary facilities.
The finance committee approved a revised war tax plan raising excess profits for corporations, partnerships and individuals from 14 to 40 percent. The package increases revenue by about 505 million over current law, bringing total war tax revenue to about 1.6556 billion dollars and is unlikely to be cut.
Madrid report says a German submarine seeking refuge at Gadiz departed yesterday morning escorted by two Spanish torpedo boats. Berlin promised the submarine would head directly to a German port and refrain from attacking enemy ships or taking any other wartime action.
London reports that American minister Dr. Maurice Egan protested to the Danish foreign office over anti American remarks by M Stauning a Socialist in the Danish cabinet at the Stockholm peace conference.
Rome reports today that in response to heavy attacks several Italian outposts have been withdrawn. The announcement confirms reduced frontline positions as the conflict continues.
Ruth Kline aged 36 daughter of Martin Kline of near Silver Lake wandered from her home in a demented state headed for Chicago. She was found at Bourbon.
Paris reports the first American expeditionary unit under Major General William C. Sibert arrived safely at a French port. Rear Admiral Gleaves wired Secretary Daniels confirming the landing. A New York dispatch said the second contingent disembarked that morning and moved to a nearby camp. Officials in Washington noted no official report but confirmed all first expedition units have landed safely.
Chicago, June 30. Two courts and the state's attorney office began a full probe into the affairs of Graham & Sons private bank which closed its doors yesterday. A receiver appointed by the U S district court oversees the bank with assets about 6 million dollars, liabilities five million, and deposits around four million.
Baron Rhondda, British food controller, told reporters in London on June 30 that the food situation is satisfactory given current conditions. He added there is no present fear Germany will prevail in the submarine campaign, though the future remains uncertain.

In Elkhart Superior Court Judge Harman sentences Levi Wilson to life in Michigan City Prison Ralph Russell to Jeffersonville reformatory for two to 21 years and William Haizlit to Jeffersonville reformatory for two to 21 years for the June 18 1917 murder at a rooming house. Clyde Whitmyre of Elkhart pleads guilty to failure to support a child and is sent to Michigan City prison for one to seven years.
Ernest Roosa of Goshen, a new member of the Winchester militia company detachment under Lieut Daly, is hospitalized after a fall from the N X C bridge over the Elkhart river west of Goshen. He suffered injuries to his right ankle and head and will be out of duty for several days. Dr. G A Whippy attended.
Democratic chairmen from five of six counties in the 12th district met at Fort Wayne to discuss party organization. They decided to drop party lines and nominate good candidates for delegates to the constitutional convention.
Postoffice clerks from across Indiana are expected to gather at the Hotel Severin in Indianapolis on July 4 for the seventeenth annual state convention of the United National Association of Postoffice Clerks.

Addressee pays receipt if return receipt is requested. Parcel contents must be fully described to classify perishability or fragility. Insurance fee stays the same. Indemnity for C O D parcels increases to 100 with a 25 cent fee. fees are 10 cents for remittances up to 50 and 25 cents for up to 100. Parcels over 50 with remittance 50 or less may include 25 cent fee for indemnity up to 100. Parcels with remittance 50 but higher collection costs may require 10 cent fee.
Reports say Wakarusa has raised 750 dollars for the Red Cross war fund. Millersburg and New Paris campaigns progress well with satisfactory subscriptions. Full Fikhart county apportionment of 20000 dollars expected to be raised.
Mortuary notice reports Philip P. Roush a North Central locomotive engineer aged 35 died at home in Elkhart from heart ailment. Survived by wife, one daughter, father Jonathan R. Roush and four sisters.
Albert Vrbovec, a horn maker, faced Elkhart city court on assault and battery charges for striking his wife. He was assessed 11 dollars and a 20 day jail term was suspended if he posted a 500 dollar surety of the peace bond after knocking out a front tooth.
Frank Foulks, badly injured in a Thursday auto wreck at Elkhart, has been moved from General hospital to his south Ninth street home in that city.
At Fort Wayne the Home Telephone Co has surrendered its franchise and will operate under an indeterminate permit from the Indiana public service commission.
Harry C. Dangler sells a residence on North Sixth Street to Isaac and Charles Masters of this city. The transfer records show the transaction completed and filed locally.
C B R Waterhouse longtime Kendallville resident and landowner died last night at Kendallville. He owned a sizable estate and the Kendallville Reds baseball team.
Joseph D. Oliver Jr of South Bend a plow maker visits Washington to confer with Herbert Hoover the food director. No details of the interview were released for publication.

More than six hundred people enjoyed the second band concert of the season at Rogers band park with Elkhart musicians aiding the ensemble. A pavilion dance followed as Elk hart residents mingled, and tomorrow Ben Koehler's South Bend All Stars face Rogers Greys with former Central league players in the slate. Adam Michalowski and Joseph Lewandowski were found asleep in the basement of Mrs. W. G. Muzzy’s Elkhart home. They had been hired to remodel the house and, with nowhere else to sleep, believed the cellar posed no harm. Their explanation was considered satisfactory.
Leonard Buckland aged 30 of Brownstown is jailed at Seymour Indiana on bigamy charges. Two wives have appeared. one wife in Indianapolis says she married him in St Louis on June 29 1914. The other wife, formerly Miss Josephine Goss of Brownstown, says she wed Buckland on June 13 1917.
A son was born to Mr and Mrs Toy Gow Chinese of St Joseph Michigan. Mr Toy Gow formerly conducted a laundry at Laporte.
