Elkhart, Indiana. Samuel Trump a filer at the Corn horn factory earning 1.25 daily was jailed for contempt for failing to pay 70 toward child support after a December divorce from Cor Trump. He blamed hardship and hoped future raises but judge Ferrall ordered detention until payment or a surety.
County commissioners relent after initial refusal and grant permission to the Fourth of July committee to use the west side of the park for the celebration, ensuring planning continues as Inde pendence Day committee is pleased. Robbed in Chicago. Thief Takes 250 to 300 dollars from E W Baker. Baker reports his cash missing after leaving clothes in an adjoining room. no suspects identified.
J G Harro lp responds to Councilman Butterfield over water payments. He says the city rate is 3 per wagon per week during sprinkling season and disputes Butterfield’s April to October framing. He asserts he has not violated the contract and credits the city treasurer’s records.
The Fourth of July meeting attracted strong turnout with Joe H. Lesh named parade marshal. Floral and athletic committees expect about $200 in prizes. Lodges urged to keep open houses for visiting members as preparations continue.
Tomorrow morning Harry Myers will join Haskins and Son in the Stonex block, buying half the restaurant business from F. P. Haskins who opens a new Elkhart outlet. Seventy five employees at Syracuse Manufacturing Company North Manchester strike to retain D C Lamb as department manager. The firm, once based in Syracuse, is linked to the Lambs of Goshen, with McGarvey and Brown disputing at Besson s drug store.
Chicago Telephone Supply Company completes contract to move its plant to Elkhart with 150 Beardsley avenue lots sold to fund building site. The facility aims to open by Sept 15 1902 and pay about 800000 in wages over six years. Local officials report possible two hour faster Century trains to Chicago Cleveland route. A mysterious incident at an Elkhart boarding house involved “cowhoge” causing severe pain to residents.
From Fostoria Ohio Van Bennett writes the Democrat claiming no indictment was returned in the Buckeye state for stealing clover seed. Bennett says he was arrested in Goshen months ago kept in jail several days and released. He plans to sue for damages for false imprisonment and reputation ruin.
Mrs Minnie Shreiner aged 37 of Elkhart died yesterday from consumption. She was a member of the Mennonite church and wife of Levi Shreiner.
The marriage of Rudder Rusk of Elkhart and Nora Harmon of Goshen will be held at 8 p m at the bride s aunt Mrs Russell Blair s home in Elkhart. Rev Light of the Methodist church will officiate with about 125 guests including visitors from Dayton Canton Chicago and other cities. Bertha Wilson of Chicago cousin of the bride will be bridemaid, Harry Long of Elkhart best man. The couple plan a short wedding trip and will live in Elkhart. Rusk teaches music.
After it in earnest Warsaw targets Ringling winter quarters. Dr Chas A Rigdon heads the campaign to attract the show. The Times notes over 1000 workers are employed seasonally with 200 300 laborers year round, and Ringling’s investment exceeds half a million prompting local businessmen to act.
Prof T J Juday and daughter Misa Bernice attended the fifteenth Juday family reunion at Lake Wawasee with over 250 members. The gathering featured a big dinner, singing, and speeches with Prof Juday among the speakers. Separately Rev MacLaughlin united Wm Bickel of Bristol and Eva May Spencer of near Bristol, who plan to live in Elkhart after a Chicago honeymoon.
The Northern Indiana Baptist Association began at First Baptist in Mishawaka with Rev. E H Emett delivering the annual sermon on the Defeat of Amalek by Israel. Officers were elected, reports read, and new pastors introduced as the gathering continued with society and auxiliary meetings scheduled through the week.
A Grand Rapids telegram reports Lee Morgan, once jailed for board bills and other larcenies, attempted suicide at Michigan City prison after release. He had become a book agent, traveled with his wife, and faced mental distress and theft accusations before the assault. The incident may lead to insanity proceedings. The 83-year-old daughter of John Ger ing of Mishawaka fell from a steamboat dock into eight feet of water last evening. Her 5-year-old brother clung to timbers and her clothing for ten minutes before rescuers pulled them into a boat. Both children are expected to recover.
