In Goshen Indiana on May 16, Harry Toms was found not guilty of murdering Erastus Paul in New Paris. Jury returned verdict at 9:55 p.m. after 5:30 p.m. deliberations. A 77 year old Benton Harbor man J H Rizner was found dead near Garber Lake farm of Henry Shannifield seven miles north of Elkhart. An empty laudanum bottle near the body and two cents in clothing led coroner to conclude suicide after Rizner had been missing two weeks.
