Paris reports unusually heavy artillery on the French front north of Somme and on the Aisne front as German surprise attack fails. In Italy General Cadorna resumes the offensive with official statements claiming the capture of Monte Ortigara and Angello Pass.

George D. Bender a 39 year old South Chicago department store owner died suddenly yesterday at his sister Mrs M C Schrock’s home on South Seventh Street where he had been visiting. He had surgery for appendicitis in Chicago weeks earlier and was recuperating. Surviving are his wife and daughter Glendora, his sister Mrs M C Schrock of Goshen and brothers Frank Bender of California and W H Bender of Ligonier. Funeral plans were to be announced.
