S Summers of Chicago arrives in Goshen claiming C C Hill stole about $1000 from her after a hurried marriage plan. Hill, a former Goshen businessman now elusive, left his wife and creditors behind. Summers, dressed fashionably, pursues Hill through Goshen and Constantine, while police assess her meritorious case and Hill's whereabouts remain uncertain.
Attorney Janes Showalter files for Frank Lin BK Adams vs Ella Adams alleging abandonment. Parties wed June 22 and separated August 20. A license issued to Claude H Hilbert. Ekihart and Myrtle J Keely consent. Judge Wilson in chambers. Two bids for Bristol bridge loan total 2705 at 12 premium. St Joe Valley Bank of Ekihart bids 2755 at 5 percent interest, payable in advance.
Ex city attorney I A Simmons is the sole living Goshen member of Co A 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery following the death of Dorsey S Chamberlain. A reunion of the battery is planned for Rome City in September. Work on the Kindig block for Silver Bros Co advances and should finish by Sept 15. The local morgue basement is finished and steel ceilings soon. Attorney Warren Berkey had facial bleeding twice, but no serious harm is expected. An Italian organ grinder and monkey sought by Salvatore Sandill of Toledo. Michigan City Democrats seek a speech by Senator D B Bill. Baptist Sunday School plans a phase at Burns park Thursday.
Gold Democrats in the state line with the party and will vote for Bryan. They had awaited the national gold committee decision on a third ticket, and with few exceptions most will back Bryan now. They oppose the money plank and imperialism is their top issue. they also blame the current administration as controlled by trusts.
Cora Spry a twelve year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Delorma Spry on North Seventh street draws attention as an extraordinary plantchet reader. Neighbors claim she has solved several local mysteries and spends much time at home telling of the past and future.
The indiana department G. A. R. reports 450 posts in the state with four new posts since the last report and nine disbanded. Membership shows a gain of 196 members in six months, while deaths since January total 210.
In the state versus John Gessinger case, guilt was found for assault on Samuel Hoover with a $355 fine and costs. Hoover was found not guilty on an assault charge. Gessinger pleaded guilty to profanity and paid a separate fine. Additional cases involving Wm Troyer and a threatened affidavit against a farmer were noted as unresolved.
James Reed who escaped from the Elkhart stone yard on May 5 was recaptured at 2 this morning at a relative’s home in Elkhart. Also noted: Wick ham escaped through a grate. Willie Wood Charles Moore or Hugh Reynolds named. Peter Westbrook bound over to circuit court under 300 dollars for stealing razors from Geo Townan of Eckhart. Townan’s barber shop victim. Wh Stewart and Walker outriding bicycles. dog attack by Wm T Ecker leading to a warrant for Ecker, member of Co E, once attacked Jonas Hoover.
Joe Buszkowsky a 37 year old Pole narrowly escaped being crushed by a westbound electric car on a Sunday night near South Bend. He was riding ahead of the car and crossed its track when struck, head cut and bruised. He refused ambulance and walked home. bicycle wrecked.
Deputy United States Marabal Rose arrested Louis La Fleur on war revenue law violation charges after a Middlebury bottle without a stamp was sold. He was bound over in 200 dollars and jailed when unable to pay.
Mrs Samuel Wheatstone daughter of Mrs C A Barthol resided on South Third street near Bristol six miles north of Goshen found dead about 5 pm beside a tree in the yard where she sewed. A victim of apoplexy and heart trouble she left behind a husband and three children aged 18 months 4 and 6 years. The infant slept with the deceased head on her breast. Coroner Esenbeiss held the inquest. undertaker Culp notified. The family believes sudden death occurred around 1 pm with no signs of extreme suffering. The 27 year old was known in the city and will be interred Thursday.
Fort Wayne hopes to host a grand circuit race week during the September 17 period with possible meetings at Empire track New York City Terre Haute track and local businessmen urged to donate 1500. Detroit Driv ing Club secretary George D Connor in Fort Wayne promises a five day meet with purses of 1000 daily.
A quiet Republican judicial contest shows no major moves this week. In LaGrange county factions debate Dodge Vail and Chamberlain as candidates for the Shipshewana convention on August 16. Dodge supporters claim strength in Goshen while Vail faces cross-county opposition and finance appears ample.
The gold loving cup by Tiffany & Co. New York, gift to James Oliver for his enterprise in building the splendid new hotel in South Bend, was sent to the Paris Exposition by special arrangement and praised as the finest piece in the Tiffany display. Paris papers and critics are enthusiastic.
