Indiana and Illinois coal operators rejected a joint meeting of operators and miners to settle the day men strike. President Wilson weighs reopening the wage award of the bituminous coal commission to include nine liberers, amid labor discontent and production cuts.
The United Mine Workers of America received blanket authority from its international executive board to take any necessary action in response to the walkout of mine and day workers in Indiana and Illinois coal fields. Terre Haute officials report nearly all mines closed with no change in the situation. Operators in Indiana declined to join a joint conference with the union.
Chicago coal operators scale committee members meet to consider President John N. Lewis invitation to confer with miners scale committee. They say they cannot alter the wage agreement signed last April unless the government reopens the coal commission hearings that produced the scale.
TERRE HAUTE July 30 The coal strike in Indiana is described by United Mine Workers District No 11 President Ed Stewart as virtually nationwide with less than ten percent of bituminous mines operating. He expressed hope for an early resolution but cautioned the path forward remains unclear.

Edward W. Neidig of Urbana now owns the Urbana milk condensing business with partners Haines Egbert and W. W. Fobes of Goshen. Egbert and Fobes recently bought Neidig's partner's interest as part of the ownership group.

Frank Brooke deputy lieutenant for County Wicklow was shot and killed at West Landrow station Dublin as he alighted from a train. Born 1851, he joined the navy in 1865 and retired in 1877 as a lieutenant.
