A Sunday afternoon cyclone battered Goshen with fierce winds and rain, uprooting trees and tearing awnings. Lightning struck houses and a factory chimney while many streets showed wreckage and communications were cut for hours. No injuries were reported as repairs began.
Hosack Joseph L. Hosack 55 died at 2 30 p m Sunday from abdominal cancer at his father in law Henry Bowser 118 Wear Madison street after a lingering illness He was a resident of Elkhart came to the city five weeks ago and never rallied Survived by wife and four children Charles Auburn Walter Butler Burt Chicago and Nellie Carver Columbia City Funeral services set for 2 30 Wednesday from Bowser residence Hosack previously ran a blacksmith shop in the old Hope building before leaving Goshen
A Big Four excursion train of 13 coaches carrying hundreds from Louisville, Kentucky, derailed after a northbound freight blocked the main track at a switch near Alexandria. The freight cars were wrecked as two excursion cars failed to clear. Tracks were blocked for three hours. hundreds of passengers walked into Alexandria and awaited the return train. No injuries reported among the passengers.
Lon Cox and a Chinese laundry worker fought on East Lincoln avenue about 9 PM Saturday. Cox reportedly taunted the man, who defended himself with notable pugilistic skill. Cox's wife intervened to prevent a fall down basement steps. No arrests were made.
Louis Roth aged 18, son of Mr and Mrs George Roth, died Sunday at his Bristol home from diphtheria after a brief illness. He recently graduated from Bristol High School. Survived by parents, brother Homer and nephew of William Ulery. Private funeral held yesterday.
Mrs. Jacob Minger suffered severe hand burns when a kettle slipped and spilled boiling water as she emptied it yesterday.
A Goshen meeting of telephone men discussed opening an exchange for farmers mutual lines in Elkheart LaGrange and Kosciusko counties. H L Oldfather of Peoples Mutual Telephone Co and I N Smith of LaGrange attended. The goal is a first class line to Indianapolis and improved service.
The Warsaw Union notes hints that the probe into selling exam questions was halted after State Superintendent Jones blustered about it, suggesting fear of an inquiry into his office. Some believe the state office is likelier to hold guilt than county superintendents, and the public deserves an explanation from State Supt. Jones.
Harry 8. Enyart resigns from W. W. Hatch & Bons in Crawfordsville to take the La Porte Michigan City interurban post now under construction by J. J. Burns and others. Upon completion he becomes general superintendent. he is noted as a capable figure in electric railway work. A lawn party at the Teagarden home in West Goshen Saturday drew about 60 guests with games music and late refreshments.
Charles Cunningham, two year Chicago bank worker visiting his parents, leaves for Rawlins Wyoming to join the First National Bank of that city. A Goshen high school graduate with many friends, his move is celebrated.
Former Goshen resident Robert Elliott visits family in town before returning to Toronto Canada where he works in the car shops. The post office gains a new stamp canceling machine and improvements near completion. N Brown returns to Warsaw for auto repairs after a steam jet accident blinded his eyes briefly. New positions: Clifford Bartholomew leaves Myers & Haskins to cook on a Lake Shore dining car while Henry Sawyer fills a vacancy at Cafatiera. A bakery theft and a reform-school returnee noted. Mel Meredith plans early September horse starts. A street quarrel on West Lincoln Avenue ends without arrests.
Jacob Bloss a fruit grower from near Bristol and his son Reginald Garver were held up near the Osceola school house while returning from selling berries. Two armed men forced Bloss to surrender about 75 dollars. They fled toward the railroad, likely boarding a Lake Shore freight and heading west possibly to Chicago.
A New York Herald Sunday photo uses a Miss Pearl Boyer image from Goshen with the caption Miss Minam Stuyvesant Van Der Planck, claiming she is from New York and is at Bethlehem New Hampshire. The article calls this intentional mislabeling a fraudulent credit practice by large papers.

Yesterday Harry R. Whitmer and family drove to Lake Wawasee. On returning they ran out of gasoline and the auto stalled at Ira Hapner farm. They left the car at the Hapner place and traveled to Goshen on the Keith stage. The vehicle had not run for days and had just been repaired.
The annual session of the Eel River Christian conference will convene in Goshen August 12 to 17 at the First Christian church. About 200 ministers and delegates are expected. Local churches invite all to help with entertaining the visitors under the shared custom.
Mrs. Jesse Callahan of near Decatur laid a sheet of fly paper near her four month old baby's bed. When she returned in half an hour the child lay dead with the paper stuck to its face. The infant had drawn the paper over its face and smothered. The mother is distraught.
Engineer Peter Dunnahoo remains hospitalized at Clark hospital in Elkhart with a weakening condition and a pulse that fluctuated but shows no improvement. Doctors fear death is imminent, not more than 48 hours away.
Agent J M Ober claims freight handling at the Big Four freight house reaches a record high with eight freight handlers employed now. A few years ago only two men were on staff. The Heatwale Camp No. 4075 Modern Woodmen trip from here sold 233 tickets. The train left at 8:30 and returned by ten. Despite a light sprinkle, the day was orderly with no accidents. Thousands visited the Michigan resort as Big Four railcars moved through town.
A. B. Witt found suspicious raw meat on the way to town, took it to Dr. Armour who diagnosed strychnine. Authorities will monitor the site where poison was located. It clarifies where many dogs were poisoned last winter and spring.
Goshen Lodge No. 798 BPOE negotiates a special train to War Saw via the Big Four this Thursday July in which a lodge will be organized there. Local attendance expected. Prof. J F Rieman plans a winter lecture course with top national talent, aiming for a program rivaling Elkhart.
