A violent storm struck Elkhart at 3 am with wind and heavy rain. David Kauffman, Big Four yard master, was shocked by lightning entering an electric wire and knocked unconscious in the kitchen. He was revived after hours of effort and faced ongoing fright.
A large force of Italian laborers began building a turn out on South Main Street between Pearl Street and Garfield Avenue in Goshen. The project spans about one block and should finish in ten days to two weeks, with some South Main Street property owners north of Douglas seeking added payment from the company for brick.
Wednesday evening the Christian church members surprised the pastor at his Olive street home. A large gathering enjoyed two hours of social time, strengthening church ties. A kitchen shower for Emma Rummel precedes her Aug. 21 marriage to Dallas Blue. Picnics, dinners, and cottage gatherings filled the week with local families and visitors from Reading, Goshen, and Toledo.
Richard Collins is confined to his home on Middlebury street by illness. Mrs. Collins is able to sit up after an illness of four weeks. Mrs. George Snider of four miles north of the city is sick.
Ballpark thefts see a large haul taken previously by local youths. The stolen items were recovered today and returned. The marshal warned of arrest and prosecution if further incidents occur.

The will of William A Butler rich Benton township farmer was probated by Clerk Fleming this afternoon. Dated July 5 on his death bed it names Burton W Butler Edward L Butler and Edwina S Butler as heirs with equal shares. Appraisers may decide on farm values and the estate was valued around $100000 with the homestead 40 acres among the bequests.
Deeds filed by Recorder Vernon allocate the late William A. Butler’s Benton township farm to his three offspring. Edwina S. Butler receives 206 acres in Benton, Burton W. Butler gets 40 acres and the business room at 228 South Main Goshen, Edward L. Butler receives 160 acres in Grant County and 40 in Clinton township and will live with his sister. The Jackson township 160 acres left to be divided among the three heirs.
Eph J Mentzer a railway mail clerk formerly of Goshen and now of Biknart filed for divorce from Jennie Clark Mentzer of Cleveland in superior court. Married in Cleveland December 5 1905 he alleges separation April 18 last after moving to Elkhart with children. He says she is a fortune hunter sought to obtain life insurance policies and to have Chicago realty conveyed to her name and that she treated him cruelly.
The Fort Wayne diocese marks its 50th anniversary with celebrations on September 22 in every Catholic church. The events are described as among the most elaborate in the diocese's history and will honor its formation.
The Supreme Tent of the Knights of the Maccabees concluded its eleventh and final triennial review in Detroit on Saturday. After this meeting the organization will hold gatherings only once every four years, among several changes adopted at the close of the session.
Nelson Books, held on charges of placing an obstruction on the Co. B. and N. I. tracks, was visited today by his brother as a sanity commission proceeds to assess his mental condition.
Mrs. C. L. Doty of Birkhart returns home to find her husband has gone. He packed his clothing and tools and left without explanation.
In superior court the Newman-Monger company seeks judgment to foreclose a mechanic's lien for 2000 against William Reader. The action alleges the lien remains unpaid for work performed and materials supplied, with the prayer for relief including foreclosure and related costs.
Miss Effie Hardesty will appear in an extra number at the Irwin tonight. She will perform a singing turn.
Goshen is preparing 180 boys for a Winona Boysville camp event with 5,000 residents anticipated. Messenger Boys of First Presbyterian plan to locate first, led by Thomas A. Davis and seniors Abbott Newell Knox Dewey Beck. Other church groups join with Cadets and Cadets’ clubs set to travel, as PF Abbott Jr campaigns locally.
Syracuse stockholders of the defunct Indianapolis Huntington Columbia City and Northwestern Ry Co have been notified that unless action is taken at once the property will be sold by the receiver at a great sacrifice. A meeting of all stockholders is set for Friday July 26 in Indianapolis to raise funds to pay debts and take the line from receivership led by former president C I Merrifield. Local stockholders show enthusiasm to join the effort.
Mrs. Julia Ann Lenon of Muncie died suddenly in La Porte where she had traveled to visit her husband Edward Lenon employed on the New York Chicago Electric Airline. She had suffered ill health for three years but remained able to visit and be up and around until her death.
In Albion the town talks of a young woman named Marie Cook who has the smallpox and is in charge of the Albion Home Telephone Exchange. The exchange is quarantined and her mother cares for her as she remains afflicted.
James Holley died ten days after a fall from a Cromwell area barn. Despite initial hopes for recovery, autopsy revealed a brain blood clot caused his death.
John W Fieldhouse transfers a lot in Elkhart to Vernon W Steiner for 30 dollars. Carrie R Howland transfers a lot in Elkhart to Carolina Swanson for 425 dollars. Florence G Davenport transfers a lot in Goshen to Caroline Elva M Hill to Frances E Minger for 650 dollars.
A partial lunar eclipse occurred last night with the climax at 10 22 as three fifths of the moon’s diameter was obscured. Astronomers note all eclipses originate from the east due to the moon’s eastward orbital motion.

Father L A Eberle arrives from Portland Ind to assume pastorate of St Johns in Goshen after three years at St Marys Portland where the church grew, was remodeled, and grounds improved. Father Fitzpatrick leaves Goshen and Father Travers of Fairmount will lead Portland.
The third annual session of the St Joseph Valley chautauqua begins in Elkhart tonight with Dr C M Eisenbeiss postmaster of Elkhart and association president delivering the opening address. Dr H A Gobin of DePauw arrives to lead Bible work and Prof Pearson of Philadelphia arrives to oversee the platform. William Jennings Bryan is slated to speak tomorrow afternoon and Senator Tillman is expected to draw record crowds next week.
William J Bryan will arrive in Elkhart from Chicago at 1 20 tomorrow afternoon over the Lake Shore. A reception will be held on the grounds before his lecture at the Chautauqua. He departs Elkhart at 5 over the Big Four to Niles Michigan then Michigan Central to Kalamazoo for another appearance.
Chief of Police Silvers of Elihart warns liquor dealers to obey the law or face prosecution and fines. He will enforce statutes, urging closing by 11 p m and reopening next day. He also urges bartenders and porters kept out on the Sabbath amid actions to revoke Frank Weatherwax's license.
After lying 54 hours at the bottom of Sylvan lake the body of Geo O Connor a Fort Wayne young man who was drowned at Rome City was recovered in the late hours yesterday restoring the family’s sorrow with the grim task of burial.
Klopfenstein and Himebaugh of Go shen submitted the sole bid for a paving contract in Warsaw. The award has not yet been made, amid ongoing trouble over paving in the area.
Myron Staples son of Sheriff Sta ples of Whitley county died after a coal oil can exploded in the jail eating room at Columbia City. He was alone in the room when the fire occurred.
Travie Butler of Benton travels with the Barlow Bros show, moving from New Lebanon to multiple sites in Pennsylvania as the act tours the region. Butler reports active jumping between venues amid the traveling circus circuit.
Races may be staged at Model Pacing Farm next summer as plans include a grand stand and a fine track. D H Mast, owner, aims to develop racing and matinees to attract visitors, boosting Goshen’s status as a horse center after his move from West Milton, Ohio.
A crowd watched fifty mud splashed autos parade to Columbus Circle as the Automobile Club of Buffalo clinched the Glidden trophy for a third year running. Percy Pierce of Buffalo previously held the prize, with his club maintaining the lead amid the July tour through Goshen on July 11.

Mary Gadowski a Polish woman from South Bend could not read English and boarded a train to Toledo believing a slip in English was her ticket. At Elkhart she was removed and sent back to South Bend to obtain a proper ticket before continuing to Toledo to wed.
Rev. E. S. Shumaker district superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League will succeed Ulysses G. Humphreys as state superintendent and begin duties September 2. Shumaker was chosen by the Indiana headquarters committee and will base his work in Indianapolis.
Will Plank, an employee of the Economy, bought an 80 acre farm from Sol Stutsman about three miles west of Goshen for roughly $100 per acre.

Creatore's band has been engaged to give two concerts at Winona park on Wednesday August 7. The engagement follows a successful appearance in the city and adds to a busy summer schedule for the orchestra leader.

Samuel T. Murdock, a principal owner of the C. S. B. & N. S. Railway, urged Elkhart council to grant a 50 year franchise. He pledged at least 150000 dollars to extend and improve city lines within two years if approved. The council, with one dissent from Alderman C. M. Lounsberry, passed on first reading before adjourning.
Crowds, notably Goshen residents, attend Theodore Thomas orchestra at Winona Park this week. Frederick Stock conducts the large ensemble in a sacred music program led by Mrs. Thomas Whallon of Indianapolis, with Bruno Steindel the renowned cellist. The group debuted in Winona last year and remains on a high plane of excellence. Afternoon and evening performances continue through the week.
Construction on the Syracuse and Milford railroad advances with an expected August inauguration. Hourly motor car passenger service will connect Syracuse directly to the Big Four and Winona interurban at Warsaw Goshen and other northern Indiana points, with Oakwood Park near Lake Wawasee serving as a station.
Rogers band offers an open air concert tomorrow at 7 30 PM in the court park pavilion. The program includes March Genius of Liberty Heyser Selection It Happened in Nord land Herbert Waltz Romantic Tobani Selection from Tannhauser Wagner Piccolo Solo Polka Spring Warbling Medley Overture played by Mr. Davis Cox Halle.
A 35 year old named Jennie Bessemer attempted suicide in Kalamazoo by taking carbolic acid substitute from a drug clerk who misled her with a castor oil composition. She swallowed half the contents, ran to bid a friend goodbye, and survived.
Charles Crary was assessed $15 for intoxication after being arrested on Pike street by Marshal Self and spending the night in jail. He will soon return to San Francisco, California.
