Paris reports a strong German counterattack between Ourcq and the Marne was broken by Allied forces. The war office says the positions held, with attacks in the Grissolles area seven miles NW of Chateau Thierry and Bezu Saint Germaine four miles north.
The German crown prince calls on Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria as German units retreat from the Marne front. Allied forces drive the Germans back near Soissons while French and American troops push across the river. American troops report crossing the Marne east of Chateau Thierry and taking Barbilion woods as the French throw bridges under heavy fire. Meanwhile Italian advances press the Austrians, and Emperor Charles accepts the Austrian cabinet resignations.
London reports the British destroyer Maine has sunk a German submarine. The official statement confirms the naval action and notes the date of the operation. More details were not released.
While Mr and Mrs Floyd Stauffer were in Goshen Saturday evening an unknown party entered their residence near Dunlaps but was discovered before he could secure any loot.
John Belt of five miles north of the city sold his 60 acre farm through Albert Weaver to Irvin Wagner of Nappanee. Possession will be given December 1st.
In Orleans Massachusetts on July 22 a wrecking fleet worked to raise three barges sunk by a German submarine offshore yesterday. They also sought to salvage a fourth barge and the tug Perth Amboy damaged by shell fire.
The Rev. Morris Peterson who just returned from Minnesota resigned as pastor of First Christian Church after about two years in the role. He has received several offers in pastoral evangelistic and YMCA work and will remain in the city indefinitely.
It is officially announced that cash sales of war savings stamps in Elkhart County up to and including July 15 are $407,676.50 or $3.08 per capita. The county’s allotment is $1,007,880. Pledges from June 15 are not included. Including pledges, Elkhart County has exceeded its quota.

Garrett July 22 1913 Irvin Clayton aged about 50 years who had lived in the city for several months shot himself in the mouth with a revolver after a period of ill health. He formerly lived at Milford and is survived by four brothers P H Wm Creiz and Otis Clayton.
An automobile with Missouri plates stopped for gas at a Goshen garage. A Nebraska plate car pulled in. the two drivers, an intimate friend and the Missouri party, realized they were unknowingly touring together. A long visit followed.
Damage aggregating fifteen thousand dollars occurred from a fire that began in a barn at the rear of Joseph Palicki’s residence in South Bend. Six property owners, all Pollocks, are listed as having losses.
The Nappanee town board ordered R. R. Berlin to visit Goshen and obtain official measurements from the official plat of East Lincoln Street for a planned survey.
In Gary police raid operations 300 gallons of liquor were seized and diverted into a sewer system. The raid underscores ongoing efforts to curb bootlegging in the city.
Washington dispatch reports five Indiana men named in yesterday's casualty list. Killed in action Ralph D. Boone of Greencastle and Daniel Hibbard of La Porte. Died of wounds Myrl Mullens Owensburg. Died of disease Charles Braugh Ellettsville. Died from accident or other causes John Vaughn Mongo. Severely wounded Chriffith P. Jones Jaunionville.
James Cook of Battle Creek Michigan is hospitalized in Epworth after being shot near the base of the brain by John Voiani an Italian in the Voiani soft drink parlor. Cook and two drunken companions abused Voiani when he refused service and labeled him pro German and a stalker. Voiani is under arrest and police statement filed.
Jacob Pfeiffer of Middlebury township attended the battalion review at the fair grounds Sunday. He will be 92 years old next November and appears much younger. Two other Middlebury residents, John Lake and J. I Shrock, are also noted as aged.
Two hundred delegates attended the IIth semi annual conference of Lidia union printers at Kokomo with reports on wages organization and working conditions.
A large crowd witnessed a battalion drill at Elkhart county fairgrounds. Early calls tested mobilization as Major Henry W. Pease ordered five companies to assemble at Milford Junction, with alarms sounding between 1 and 3 a.m. The display showed unusual readiness among the guardsmen.
Militiamen led by Chef Johnson of the city, aided by guardsmen, received excellent music from the First Regiment band of Warsaw. The assemblage is described as one of the finest military bands in Northern Indiana.

A valuable dog owned by Boyd Whitehead survived injuries from being run over by the Folker automobile on Wilkinson street. The dog was rushed to veterinary offices but neither doctor was in. it was believed to be hurt internally. Recovery is reported complete.
South Bend News Times reports Mayor Carson a Republican targets Democrats in city hall aiming to push them to the basement of local government.
Advance guard instructions were carried out with Elkhart and local detachments along Turkey Creek. Troopers acted against mock Hun forces in a detailed exercise under Major Pease. The drill went smoothly with no heat prostrations and regular camp meals served.
The Osceola M ishawaka paved highway is now open to general traffic with only a short two block section not requiring detours. Traffic will improve after a long paving period east of Mishawaka. By year end 1919 a Goshen to South Bend drive on pavement is expected. Plans to pave Elkhart to Osceola, including a new road, are set for next summer.

Washington July 22 A national plan for a liberty wheat harvest in 1919 was announced by the U S Department of Agriculture Farmers are asked to sow winter wheat this fall not less than 45 000 000 acres an increase of 7 percent over last year The department suggests that as many as 47 500 000 acres could be sown if conditions are favorable to better meet Allied needs in the war effort.
A son was born yesterday morning at Goshen hospital to Mr and Mrs Jacob Yarian of Harrison township. A daughter was born last night to Mr and Mrs Birch Barnard of North Third street.
James Hawkins of Bourbon Pennsylvania a railroad section hand was seriously injured when struck by a locomotive at Etna Green. He stopped to pick up tools and failed to notice the approaching train.
Frank Bogash 55 a well known Racetrack promoter and driver died at his Fort Wayne home from injuries after a sulky fall during a race. The accident occurred recently and Bogash had been a prominent figure in local harness racing.

Foy Thomas a 17 year old boy son of Mr and Mrs Maos Thomas residing between Lagrange and Stone Lake in Lagrange county drowned last evening at about 9 oclock while bathing with other youths at Stone Lake He reportedly suffered cramps after entering the water and cries for help were not heeded until it was too late Witnesses from Goshen Samuel Raffensperger Noble Cripe and county clerk George H Rimpler spent the day at the resort and saw the drowning The body was in the water about 15 minutes before recovery and attempts to revive him using a Culp lung motor failed to restore consciousness.
Orba Miller a railroad agent at New Paris paid a fine and costs totaling 26.15 in Justice Fryberger's court after being found guilty of assaulting Dr. Stuckman the New Paris physician. Prosecutor Simpson had issued the warrant for Miller's arrest on Saturday evening following a complaint filed by the physician. The alleged attack occurred from behind with no notice of approach.
Charles F E Heckman an Indianapolis school janitor was compelled to salute and kiss the American flag by about 500 Nordyke and Marmon Co. employees at the Indianapolis plant. Soldiers on guard assisted the workers during the incident.
Burt Inks of Ligonier has purchased the White Light theatre in Ligonier from EB N Tillman. The deal transfers ownership of the local playhouse to Inks, expanding his holdings in the town’s entertainment venues.
