Canoe trip ends at Elkhart for Chicago pair
Earl Parsons and James Wallace, both 19 and naval reserve members from Chicago, started for New York in an 18 foot canoe weighing 45 pounds. After reaching Elkhart they could not reach the Maumee by water and resorted to the railroad. They sent the canoe to Fort Wayne, planning to reboard there for the voyage. The Elk hart to Fort Wayne leg spans 84 miles, the longest portage on their record breaking journey.
