Immediate break in at Sanford Hendricks of 615 South Ninth Street ended with the family awaking and the two intruders fleeing south on Ninth Street without taking any items. Police link the pair to a prior prowling at Frank Alford’s Purl Street home.
About 200 members of the Patriarchs Militant Uniformed Rank of the I O O F gathered at West Side Park in Muncie for the midsummer session. Business matters of state importance were discussed but no decisive action taken, with sentiment to abandon the midsummer meeting. Next gathering set for Marion in February 1906. Grand secretary W H Leedy of Indianapolis attended. Uniformed ranks drilled under Col Witt of Anderson.
Goshen Lodge No. 798 B P C E has nearly closed a lease for the third floor of part of the Sanders Hay Neidig block on South Main Street. The Elks will occupy modern quarters above Silver Bros furniture with a $720 yearly rent including fuel. They will move from Ulery block once the new block is finished and access will be by electric elevator.
Ex Postmaster James D. Casey returns to Ligonier for permanent residence after residing in South Bend and Niles Michigan. Mr and Mrs Casey and their daughter traveled through Goshen yesterday to reach Ligonier.
The Fort Wayne and Wabash Valley Traction company approves plans for a $1,000,000 power station on Spy Run Avenue Fort Wayne. Officials say it will be the finest station in the middle west.
On July 29 the Lake Shore Route will run a popular low rate excursion to Chicago. The train departs Goshen at 11 35 a m. Round trip fare is 1 25. Tickets are good until July 31.
Leroy Noel employed at Pease Engine Works had a deep cut in his left wrist after a piece of steel struck his arm yesterday afternoon. Medical aid was given locally and the injury described as serious but not life threatening.
Heat caused the death of John M. Seppey a war veteran at La Porte yesterday He died within fifteen minutes after being stricken and is named as the first victim of the heat this season in the report from local authorities.
Co B Stiver bought a Shetland pony from Chas Wyland north of the city for his son Donald.

The Goshen company's officers announce the state militia encampment will be at Fort Harrison near Indianapolis August 2 to 11. Preparations begin immediately with weekly drills and target practice at the local rifle range to ready Co. G for the annual maneuvers aboard the Big Four railroad.
National bankers fear the 1903 change listing bank stock for taxation in individual names instead of banks. Banks may pay the tax on all stock, but some may opt out to boost dividends and ratings. The legislature faces criticism for departing from the prior, satisfactory method.
Henry Little, longtime editor of the Garrett Clipper, is battling pulmonary trouble and confined to his home in Garrett. His son Tracy has taken over editorial duties after the recent transfer.
Claude Cultice, a Marion garbage wagon driver, fell while unloading at the crematory and hung from an iron rod above flames until rescued. Physicians say his prospects are poor as he fights for life after the near fatal incident.
Miss Clara Ganger daughter of David Ganger of Dunlaps fainted this morning in front of the Chicago Fair store and fell striking her head on the cement walk. She also sustained a bad cut over the left eye.
The ice cream social hosted by the ladies of the First Christian church at Mrs. H. L. Jackson's home 613 South Third street drew a large crowd last evening and netted a neat sum for the church.
An unknown boy about 17 years old, possibly James Burnett of Valparaiso, drowned while bathing at Beloit Kansas. Local authorities reported a drowning with no identity confirmed.
About 35 people from Goshen joined a morning excursion to Michigan City arranged by the soldiers and sailors.

A single night shipment from Benton Harbor sent 13,000 packages of fruit including 500 to 600 baskets of peaches.
The Motte estate of Jesse W. Motte of St. Louis has been closed under Missouri law. Executor George W. Lubke Jr. has delivered property in Goshen to heir Mrs. NB. The Goshen building from Shoup Kohler is valued at 8000 dollars. The total estate is about 300900 dollars with most assets in government bonds. Bequests split among Elizabeth Noble Wheeling Alderman etc with each receiving around 190000 dollars and Alderman receiving Motte's diamonds.
A criminal case against Pacific Express Co. for evading the free delivery law started at Wabash with Prosecutor Brewer leading. A drayman charged with collecting 25 cents for deliveries allegedly refused to surrender a package, returning it to the office. Prosecutions have begun in related cases, and in Elkhart, Judge Dodge ruled American Express could limit deliveries to its office.
The Toledo and Indiana Electric line will reach Fort Wayne by next March if no new delays occur. Lawrence, Barnum & Co. and Patrick Hirsch & Co. back the project, forming the Toledo, Fort Wayne & Western. The incorporators also filed papers for a Toledo to Cincinnati line earlier this week, with potential connection to the Bucklen Valley line.
The Elkhart stone yard loses money and cannot compete with imported crushed stone. A new plan proposes using prisoners on the streets in three squads to reduce costs and benefit taxpayers. An annual pilgrimage from southern Michigan to the Lourdes shrine at Notre Dame is scheduled for August 12. Some 3000 guests are expected as a grotto replica of Lourdes Lourdes water is distributed worldwide for healing. The Notre Dame grotto features a Virgin statue and a long iron fence, funded by an eastern Catholic donor.
Former Hotel Whitcomb bowling alley manager Ray Walker last seen in St. Joseph Michigan in April has been located in Syracuse New York. He works as a hotel clerk and writes to his wife in Mishawaka Indiana explaining his whereabouts without giving reasons. Mrs Walker was ill when he vanished and reportedly refuses to forgive him.
Property owners seek a permanent injunction against Mishawaka city authorities as Judge Walter A. Funk hears petitions in the St. Joseph circuit court over pavement on Main Fourth Mill and Union streets using Warren Bros bialithic pavement proposed by the common council. The dispute has been lengthy.
While rowing on Long lake near LaPorte Mrs M E Rickert of Lapeer spotted a blue racer snake. The reptile lunged into the boat as it struck and Mrs Rickert killed it with a small rifle. The 15 foot long snake had a 16½ inch girth.
A fierce thunderstorm in northern Wabash county yesterday afternoon killed Calvin McCutcheon a farmer near Liberty Mills. It also razed Jacob Heeter s barn at North Manchester and damaged the David Sundem home at the same location.
The regular monthly meeting of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the First M. E. Church will be held Friday at 7 30 p m with Mrs J A Snapp 443 South Sixth Street noting the shift from afternoon to evening attendance.

Garman John Garman born 1818 died at his Elkhart home. Father of David Garman who died after appendicitis. Survived by one daughter three grandchildren and one great grandson. Linderman Mrs Linderman 43 died last evening at home New Paris due to complications. Survived by husband Jacob one son Frank and daughter Jora, mother Mrs Symensma two brothers and two sisters. Funeral Sunday with 9 am gathering and 10:30 am service at Whitehead Church, Rev Hiram Farney officiating. Interment Whitehead Cemetery.
During a regular rehearsal of the Ladies' Bon Ton band in Elkhart E A Couturier of New York, possibly the world’s top cornetist, listened as he played several solos. Couturier is temporarily leading Trumpet Notes Band.

Arrangements were completed for Goshen Lodge No. 798 to play a baseball game with the South Bend lodge team at Springbrook Park on Tuesday afternoon July 25. South Bend Elks, defeated by Goshen on July 4, seek a rematch.

Despite growing ownership of cars, horse prices rise from 175 to 250 dollars, with demand increasing in this territory and Southern Michigan. Dealers see no need to fear automobile competition yet as the shift remains uncertain and horses remain in strong demand.
A high official of the United States Express company denied claims that the U S company would be succeeded on the Lake Shore by American Express. He stated the report is entirely false and that the U S contract with the Lake Shore remains valid for several years and the line will not be deserted soon.

A crowd estimated between 7000 and 8000 watched the Forepaugh Sells Bros show in Allendale Addition Elkhart last night. The tent ran about three fourths full and several new acts impressed audiences. Afternoon business was lighter than hoped before the troupe heads to Benton Harbor Michigan. The Forepaugh Sells property is now held equally by James A Bailey and Ringling Bros with much equipment worn yet overall high talent.
The U S Texas and Oklahoma Oil Co. shot its No 3 well at Geneva Indiana at 6 pm Monday. The blast filled the hole to 400 feet with pure oil after 120 quarts of nitroglycerine were used and drilling interference delayed progress. An experienced driller predicts the No 3 will yield about 50 barrels for every 10 from Nos 1 and 2.

Goshen’s ball team traveled to Nappanee to face the local club in a scheduled scrimmage. The Goshen lineup includes Bunyan on the mound, Goldstein catching, Dale Kelly at first, Pratt at second, L. Kelly at second, Belknap at short, Hutchinson at left, Leaming in center, and Horne in right.
J. H. Kirkpatrick of near Marion reports 167 bushels of wheat on four acres an average of 42 bushels per acre.
John Dull and Clarence Rowe of Elkhart were caught in Goshen after a drunken spree. Dull escaped police in a chase with Constable Heath and was later fined 26 dollars for intoxication and assault. Rowe paid 16 dollars for intoxication.
Detective Halls reports John Doe, a Milford counterfeiter, refuses to reveal his real name. He is linked to William Jones, ex convict and gang leader from Van Wert Ohio, with brothers Al Bert and John in the same gang. Doe has served two Ohio penitentiary terms and is jailed in Marion County as a dangerous figure. He describes coin thefts from Nappanee and Milford and notes similar notes in Chicago.
Columbia City owns the plant and faces a dispute over costs as a new monthly rate schedule lowers or raises bills. The Post notes business houses that paid eight dollars are now billed twenty five to twenty nine dollars, casting doubt on past pricing or current charges.

Bishop John Hazen White and his newly ordained son travel to Delphi where the son prepares for a ministerial career in the Episcopal church. On Monday the bishop addressed cadets at Culver Summer Naval School as Rector White considers serving at St. Marys church in Delphi.
