A Huntington custody dispute explodes into a public scandal as Mrs Amber and John Diller elope with Amber’s 7 year old half sister, while Trustee Sweitzer sends Amber to Wabash under her uncle’s watch. The affair draws Elkhart and Marion investigators amid family accusations and press attention.
Maude Clarke, a domestic at Hotel Hattle, narrowly escaped being stabbed last night when admirer "Kid" Danning drew a dagger from his coat sleeve during a disturbance on East Lincoln avenue. Night Clerk Ralph Hinsley intervened but Danning fled toward Lake Shore station. Clarke claims ignorance of the man.
Chas. Donovan of this city and Clifford Allen, a well known rider, won the five mile tandem pursuit yesterday at Chester Park in Indianapolis. Distance 316 miles and time Us14-.
Dick Collins and A. L Place collided while riding on North Main street at noon today and both riders were thrown to the pavement. The bicycles were badly damaged. A horse owned by Mr. McCullough damaged James Crose's truck garden on the North Side. Mr. Close will likely prosecute. Henry C. Dodge, candidate for Republican judge, was in the city today to rally support and expects a large following at Shipshewana. Mrs. John Ganger, hurt by a fall at her home west of Goshen, remains in a critical condition unable to walk for weeks. The daughter of Dr. J. A. Stapp is in critical condition with little hope of recovery and not expected to survive until morning. Jacob Hattle yesterday lost a pocket book with sale notes. parties warned from buying any note drawn in favor of Hattle & Cripe.
LaPorte county commissioners granted a franchise to the LaPorte and Michigan City railway company. The action formalizes railway service expansion and outlines operating rights within the county.
Construction began today on the second and third floors of the March building on Washington street with a new stairway. A dancing floor and elaborately decorated ballroom in white and gold enamel will host society events and Criterion club dances. Mrs. March says the second floor will serve banquets after the campaign, and the hall will be fully lit by electricity with both halls usable. The finish is expected by October.
Miss Alice Stutsman hosted a refined lawn fete at her South Third Street home with guests Miss Carr Arnold Rigney Helen Carr Swartzbaugh Maiden Truex Rohrer and Messrs Miller Grant Butterfield Furman Rowell Lutz. A separate ladies party picnicked at Miller's Park and viewed a vaudeville show. Maude Devine will host a young ladies dinner at the Gilmore home on South Eighth Street.
Col. Adam 5 Baker, a respected South Bend citizen and wagon manufacturer aged about 50, died last evening from heart paralysis. He was father of Mrs. Chase Herr of the city. Mr. and Mrs. Herr were summoned after she had left him in good health about an hour earlier.
The county board of education met to arrange purchase of blanks for township trustees to requisition on advisory boards and for trustees to their successors. Supt Ellis is authorized to buy the blanks and trustees will report to the superintendent by August 7.
Katz struck an abandoned wooden main from the pumping station to Lincoln avenue. The intact condition suggests Fifth street mains south of Lincoln may not require replacement.
In Justice Farrell's court Clarence H. Nusbaum filed an affidavit against Jno Sternberg charging him with permitting Canada thistles to grow on his Hurricon township farm beyond four inches. Sternberg will contest the case.
Berjemin Miller, living two miles west of the city, fell from a hay loft yesterday and sustained serious injuries though no bones were broken. He will be unable to resume work for several days. Dr Miller was summoned.
Don DeBow aged about 1 left his Shipshewana home July 7 and is missing. Frank DeBow disclaims debts or trouble from him. In a separate item, Thompson Ross was killed in an accident near his home in Rensselaer and was expected to visit near Goshen to see F B Leaming and family.
At the Clifton township convention this afternoon Jacob Zellinger was nominated for a township position.
A movement to establish a public reading room in Goshen is led by the Y’s with aim to raise funds via subscriptions. Cooperation from W C T U Epworth League and others is sought to provide light ventilation and comfortable rooms on either the German block or Freyberg block second floor. Most reading matter will be donated and no charges will be made to users. Judge Henry C. Fox rules in Reid versus county over assessor salaries declaring county councils cannot block payment. assessors were paid for forty days though sixty were due. John Buchel, once of Mishawaka now in Joplin, Mo, visits South Bend and recalls the arrest of Albert C Peverett alias Canadian Whitey Thomas Black. Buchel says Whitey threatened to drive his family away with a gun.
Carey C the new grey stallion owned by Jos H Lesh placed second in the unfinished 2:19 trot at Grosse Pointe Detroit amid a long race carryover. Meredith drove Carey C to a heat win. later results include a 2:16 and 2:17 finishes as the track slowed horses. Delma was not started due to fitness. Cornelia Belle won the race and Lady Geraldine won the M and M 2:24 class trot. Ten thousand spectators attended the day’s racing with a $10,000 purse. Cobbett targets the Chamber of Commerce consolation race tomorrow.
During the heavy wind storm Monday the wind mill at Simmonna’s slaughter house west of the city was blown down to a total wreck. Derrik and tank fell with a crash. loss placed at 150 dollars. No one injured. Reports say fruit trees suffered across the county with many old trees uprooted.
John C. Swartz reports an interesting letter from his son, a private in the Philippines. He says many soldiers wish to go to China and notes his health has greatly improved after months in a hospital. Goshen ladies plan to attend a poverty festival in New Paris for the First M. and church. crowd anticipated.
The North Side bell team was defeated at Milford yesterday afternoon by a score of 18 to 6.
Major R P Davidson and cadets depart Chicago with a military auto battery bound for Washington on a test run via Toledo and Cleveland. The unit from Northwestern Military Academy at Highland Park plans to camp en route and drive 10 to 12 miles per hour over varied roads, with Goshen watchers hoping to see it tonight or tomorrow.
In Indianapolis a flood over two days drowned thousands of newly hatched chickens in private yard enclosures and barn lots. The loss mainly hit small owners who raise poultry for subsistence, while commercial farmers fared better.

J W Replogle and Milo Meredith attended a K Co T M gathering in LaPorte where a state banner was presented to the local Maccabees lodge of 550 members. Rathbone Sisters plan to organize a lodge in LaPorte. A 13 year old girl was burned when her dress caught fire from a stove. Interurban cars arrive for service between South Bend and Mishawaka. A stranger named W F Stepp robbed Louis Wilhelm's saloon for 375 dollars in rings.
