A late night blaze destroyed most of C. H. Cripe’s grocery on East Jefferson street with $1,000 loss, $500 insured. Fire started in the rear. cash was taken home by the owner and a possible burglary is suspected. The alarm from box No. 36 at Tenth and Madison streets was the first in over a month.
About 10 o'clock last night a burglar entered the Alford residence on Purl Street through the kitchen and entered the sleeping area. Mrs. Alford seized her husband to prevent pursuit as the intruder fled via the back door. neighbors heard the scream before the man escaped across the yard.
The day reached the 100 degree mark as the hottest of the season. Business slowed noticeably with rising temperatures and no relief in sight.
Mathias Thallemar a foreman at Ropar Manufacturing Co Mishawaka aged over seven years was attacked by two highwaymen at midnight. He was badly hurt and relieved of nearly one hundred dollars belonging to the firm plus his personal money and a gold watch.
A freight car derailed in the Lake Shore yards when a broken beam dropped onto the track at the Lincoln Avenue crossing. Workers replaced the trucks in about thirty minutes, with only crossing damage reported.
A daughter was born last night to Mr and Mrs J W Brennan of South Fifth Street, and a son was born this morning to Mr and Mrs Frank Burt of North Second Street. Both families are reported in good health.

Police notified and his father checked with relatives in Elkhart as carnival activities possible.
Mrs Amanda Martin 38 wife of Jacob Martin railroad worker North Side was declared insane and to be sent to Longceliff for treatment once accepted. She had been in failing health and today became violent using an ax on furniture. Her husband and four children will care for her at home until admission.
Mortuary record reports the death of a two year old child of Mr and Mrs Wade residing at 410 West Wilkinson Street. The notice provides the basic details of the infant death for the local funeral home records.

Frank Middlecough known as Bumpus and Samuel Layman escaped the Wabash county jail in the early morning. Despite thorough search, officers report no trace of the two fugitives at this time.
Mr and Mrs Homer Winters of South Eleventh street learned their son Houston is hospitalized in Albuquerque New Mexico with typhoid fever.
Freeland Matthews of Milford experiences a morning stroke and remains in serious condition as doctors monitor his status.
Orville Simmons sold two Riverside lots to A S Zook yesterday for a total of 750 dollars. The transfer records designate the property in Riverside as the sold parcels. The deal completes a private sale between the parties.
The Huntington Columbia City and Northwestern Railway withdraws its application to use Goshen streets citing council opposition to a steam powered franchise. Insists the line be an interurban carrying passengers mail and freight, while plans to pursue private rights or alternate routes. Council offered a 50 year deal using Winona and Indiana company tracks but the vote blocked the steam clause.
Rural agent M. D. Hoyt and Postmaster Sherwin discussed expanding rural delivery in Elkhart county. Goshen currently has seven free routes. the plan adds two more bringing total to nine with new routes to Elkhart Middlebury Nappanee and other towns. Full operation likely by October 1st or possibly November 1st with completion in about 30 days.
Rev. James A. French, formerly Notre Dame vice president, left for Cincinnati to assume the presidency of St. Joseph's college. Rev. A. Morrissey, Notre Dame’s retiring president, is at West Baden for ten days. After a month in Atlantic City, he will begin a year abroad in Europe.
County Clerk Link of LaPorte will draw a venire of 40 men for jurymen in the disbarment case involving attorneys Worden Darrow and Talbot. After names are opened, defense and prosecution strike 24, leaving 16 who will be summoned by next Monday morning as the state proceeds to trial.
The White restaurant will move into the room vacated by Cunningham drug store in Decatur Indiana. A lease is signed and Mr White is arranging renovations to create a modern handsome dining spot. He promises Goshen will have its finest restaurant.
All cases in South Bend except two have been released from quarantine and officials believe smallpox is practically wiped out with no danger of spread. The remaining two cases are under quarantine at the homes of Mrs. Mary Kline and Mrs. C. H. Clevinger.
A naphtha launch returning from River Bluff struck a snag in the St. Joseph river and sank in six feet of water at Buchanan. All 21 people aboard reached shore safely with no serious injuries.
Telegram reports Bishop Isaac W. Joyce near death in Minneapolis with family advised to prepare for his end. He is unconscious and death is believed imminent.

The Epworth League of the Fifth Avenue Methodist church invites all to an ice cream social on the church lawn next Friday evening from 7 to 9.
The Winona Interurban Railway Co. files a trust deed to issue bonds totaling 750000 at five percent interest for twenty years. Bonds include 650 notes of 1000 and 206 notes of 500. Deed is issued to First Trust and Savings bank of Chicago with Emile Boisot as vice president. Construction progresses toward the Goshen to Leesburg route with cars expected by February 1996.
Mrs. Elvira Hammer of South Bend died in Kendallville. Eli Shirk crushed in an elevator at Studebaker works in South Bend. Rev. J. B. Carter, superannuated Baptist minister, died in Plymouth. George Berringer, 14, drowned at Fish Lake near LaPorte. William Ridely, 72, died instantly of heart disease in Pleasant township, Wagoner county. Howard E. Sinton of Elkhart died of cholera infantum. Rufus Rice, Hebron liveryman, died suddenly at 50. Joan H. Niles of Mishawaka died aged 69 years 6 months 10 days after sudden illness. William Wilcoxen, 58, died from a fall on a hayload in St Joseph county hospital care.
Elkhart will host a ten day Chautauqua from August 24 to 3 inclusive at Highland Park on the St Joe river with a lineup featuring William J Bryan Robert La Follette Sam Jones George R Wendling Rev Father Francis Clement Kelley Rev Dr Scott Hershey and Prof P M Pearson as platform manager La Follette will lecture The Menace of the Machine August 26 and Bryan The Value of an Ideal August 28.

Goshen residents prepare for the arrival of Adam Forepaugh and Sells Bros. shows in Elkhart with Indiana Railway extra cars at 8:30 and 9:30 am and 1:30 and 7:30 pm to shuttle crowds to the Allendale show grounds for parades and performances.

A barn about one and a half miles west of Bourbon on the Moffitt farm owned by Frank Seavelt burned. John Josef, a resident of the place, suffered the heaviest injuries from the blaze.
Mrs. Mary Service was granted a divorce from George H. Service in LaPorte on desertion and failure to provide. George H. Service, formerly a New Carlisle banker, was cited in the proceedings.
A new dining establishment is planned for the basement of the Jefferson theatre block. The dining room will measure 50 by 66 feet and be modern in design.

A Chicago woman arriving to join her husband in Elkhart assaulted a local man who insulted her. She grabbed him by the collar and used a monkey wrench, then fled to a hotel with her husband, refusing to reveal her name. A nearby nine year old boy from Elkhart is dying of lockjaw after a rusty nail injury.
Abraham Upp, a cautious and economical Elkhart businessman and banker, helped promote substantial local prosperity. Though inactive in business for years after the Elkhart National Bank liquidation, he remained a respected figure among Elkhart’s industrial leaders alongside Clark Lane and J. W. Ellis.
Red Everett and C Cleveland were arrested on a war rant by Fred Ostatag. Everett faces assault and battery charges and Cleveland was charged with calling. Cleveland pleaded guilty and paid 13 dollars in fines and costs. Everett pleaded not guilty and posted 50 dollar bond for trial after allegedly striking Ostatag during a dispute with his wife.
The Irwin will begin its 11th season Tuesday evening August 15 featuring Dixon and Fields in Hans and Nix a New York vaudeville style musical comedy. Libretto by Kirker Norton score by Howard Webster company managed by Walters and Mathews. Massive scenery and fine wardrobe accompany a strong New York cast.
Rev. Francis P. Faust of Ege Noble county filed a report from Europe dated June 26 from Gibraltar. He described the voyage as magnificent and planned to visit Italy the continent and the British Isles before returning home.
