John B Witt suffered a severe head wound and multiple injuries after collapsing on a brick pavement at Lincoln Avenue and Third Street. He was briefly conscious, refused help, and was later taken home after leg and hand injuries.
Mrs John Genger residing one mile west of the city was badly hurt this morning when she fell violently while crossing a floor and struck her left knee tearing muscles and injuring the patella. A physician was summoned as pain intensified and she faces several weeks of crippled condition with a very serious knee joint.
An Elhart policeman intervened when a passenger refused to discard a cigarette aboard an interurban car near the jong curve west of Elhart. The conductor threatened to eject the group, the officer retrieved three fares, and a dispute over free rides followed. Nearby, census work proceeds with Goshen manufacturers amid partial blank data. A North Side Union ball game heads to Milford with Goshen players listed. Little Mary Miller shows slow but steady improvement after scalding. Mrs Betta Lorton injures her foot on a rusty nail, with blood poisoning feared. Night officers responded to a disturbance on the North Side with no arrests.

Miss Eloise RuTon of South Seventh street will host a 6 o'clock dinner tomorrow honoring Misses Lucile Benham of Chicago Dessie Kitch of Huntington and Lucile Herrington of Newark Ohio. About 15 young ladies will attend. The North Side Thimble club has gone to Lake Wawasee to be entertained at the H C Daogler cottage. In attendance are Mesdames Parker Freeman Svmmetz Burridge Howenstein Davis Quinn Fetters Crowell and Fisher. Miss Elizabeth Noble and Mayme Clark with Messrs Edward Brookmeyer and Herbert Adams traveled to Elk Hart for a Jolly Tats hammock party at Miss Agnes Pratt's Riverside home.
Report from Ligonier states the Magill household faces a cloud of discontent as Jewish residents seek the physician's resignation amid alleged unbecoming conduct at the Noble County convention. Rabbi Magill, a notable Republican figure, had been on probation since the event, prompting community action.
J A Madlem of Goshen petitions to rerun the Sixth street sewer contract or risks in building at the submitted price. He asks return of his $50 deposit. Committee recommends granting his request and letting the contract to the next lowest bidder.
Democrats of Elkhart township will meet in the council chamber Friday evening to reorganize the 1900 campaign and elect a successor to James Freeland who has served two years. An Horgan and Sevenson club will be organized. The gathering invites all Democrats and opponents of imperialism militarism trusts and McKinleyism to attend.
Elkhart poet Harry S. Chester publishes a 59 page collection titled When The Lights Go Out. The volume is neatly bound and dedicated to Hon. C G Conn and includes 47 works with a fine frontispiece portrait.
Lou Ogle of the Gardner stables left last night for Southampton Long Island with a car load of horses. He will return in about ten days, then Mr Gardner will send a car load east. Before returning he plans visits to various New York state points of interest.
Police report L LaFieur, wanted for an $805 hotel board bill at Hotel Hattie, is believed to be in Fort Wayne. He will be sought when he returns to his South Bend home.
While driving Butterfield’s back from the railroad stations to the barn this noon Ellis Duebuerry was taken suddenly and seriously ill and was compelled to stop the vehicle. He is better this afternoon.
Tom Rogers and John Dailey were arrested in Elkhart after an daylight break in at Fedder Bros. grocery. Each was bound over to the circuit court in 500 dollars bond and will remain in jail until the next term in October. They allegedly harassed passersby and attacked the clerk, with one man seen flashing a knife. Both men are candidates for the Jeffersonville reformatory and suspected seasoned burglars.
The common council of Niles met behind closed doors to discuss granting Indiana Railway Co a franchise for an electric line through the town. A Goshen to Niles through run is anticipated with fare differentials. The electric route may connect with Michigan Central and pass along the St Joe river offering scenic travel. A robbery at St Joe and a Goshen Elkhart crash story are also noted in brief.
The Interurban Congress of Modern Samaritans will meet tomorrow evening at Elkhart for a grand banquet and initiation of applicants by the South Bend degree team. Samaritans from LaPorte Michigan City South Bend Elkhart Goshen and other places attend. Goshen lodge meets at 7 o'clock and will board the 730 interurban car.
The Big Four freight locomotive, en route to be here about 5 o clock in the morning, struck a large maple tree blown across the Pipestone cut near Niles. Traveling about 35 miles an hour, the engine reversed but hit the tree on a curve with no warning. The impact damaged the headlight and tore the engine tender, while crew remained at their posts as the tree was pushed aside.
Prof C E Rogers writes from Lake Chautauqua N Y that his orchestra is at its 15th annual engagement and the chorus of 500 voices is superior to last season. The audience welcomed the ensemble as Mrs Rogers improves after illness.
C W Miller is named the Thirteenth district representative on the state Republican advisory committee succeeding L H Beyerle former Golden Times editor. Some local Republicans oppose preferring W J Davis or Col J B Dodge of Elkhart. Miller also serves as elector at large after his bid for Col Dodge’s gubernatorial nomination in Indianapolis.
A report notes Kentucky usurper Taylor will stump Indiana this fall with his first regular campaign speech at Butler on Sept. 1. Goshen Republicans oppose his visit fearing harm to their cause and chairman Berkey says no campaign arrangements are set. It is hoped Roosevelt will attend. Sears Gardner presents a gold-banded whalebone whip to Liveryman C. S. Hubbard of Dowagiac Michigan as a friendship token made by Barber & Herrick of Southfield Massachusetts.
The twelfth Goshen City band concert is set for Court Park at 8 o clock weather permitting. It features Chamber Robert Bruce Grand Selection on Scotch Melodies, Clarinet Solo The Warbler, and tunes such as Thuringen Waltzes. Jacob Hattel reports a lost pocketbook near Ariel Cycle Works with a reward offered. Mayor Dsahl will address Clinton township tomorrow. Jacob Zillinger and Chas Myers seek trustee seats. Katharine Parfitt reportedly bought a Shetland pony from Miss Helen Irwin.
J. B. Beach of Chicago a chief clerk of the general superintendent of construction for the Postal Telegraph company has disappeared from his home over a week ago. The contract for the Jos Lilly monument at the Wawas lake front has not been let. work will start late October or early November after the resort season ends.
Interest in reviving old county fairs grows in North Manchester and Huntington. Organizers aim to revive the Tri County fair grounds and hold a 1901 fair, with Huntington pledging funds and restoring a half mile track once famous for trotting. Goshen shows no revival, but locals want spring and fall race meets.
The Plymouth congressional convention adopted resolutions praising the Kansas City national platform of 1900 and Indiana state platform, endorsing Bryan and Stevenson and condemning a Porto Rico tariff vote. Charles Rawson a music teacher and dealer in instruments has left Bremen leaving wife and five children. Mrs Rawson receives funds from her father to move with the children to Lewiston Maine, their former home. The report notes the 11 year old son of Frank Pinney suffered a brain injury from a tine.
