Brutal attack on watchman at camp near Laporte
Gus Wiseman, watchman for the Air Line railway at camp No. 4, 18 miles from La Porte, was beaten by three hoboes two white men and a negro during the night. He was hurled into a firebox and left to die by suffocation and flames but escaped into the open and reached a whistle cord. Joseph Anderson at the water works nearby alerted the crew after finding Wiseman badly burned and collapsing. The emergency whistle brought out the rest of the force.
