Editor Louis B. Fretz wrote a grim farewell to his stenographer before vanishing from Fort Wayne. The letter spoke of despair and threats to self harm as he traveled to Garrett and Waterloo with checks returned for insufficient funds. Bishop Alerding buys Grape Island for diocesan retreat

Farmer Injured as Horse Steps on Foot Near Town

George Bemenderfer residing one mile north of town suffered a severe foot injury when his horse stepped on it just after quitting work last evening. Several toes were dislocated and flesh cut. he is resting easily today but confined to the house for several days.

Tax Board Opens 45 Day Session With Oath Administered

The State Board of Tax Commissioners began a 45 day period with members taking oath to assess property per law. Senator A D Ogborn of New Castle elected stenographer and Frank Martin named Deputy State Auditor secretary. Ogborn the sole applicant for stenographer will be paid five dollars daily plus thirty cents per page. Initial twenty days focus on property assessments, next fifteen on county board appeals, final ten on board appeals. few appeals expected from Elkhart County.

Ed Carter returns from Goshen claiming officers did nothing as Fausch who robbed him was caught with 55.50 of Carter’s money. Carter fined 10 for contempt, costs reduced 55.50 to 17.20. Rattlesnake Bite Narrowly Survived Near Milford

A daughter of Richcreek on Crabb farm near Milford was bitten by a rattlesnake but antitoxins saved her life. Oscar Jay and Miss Viola Hess to wed at the bride’s South Main Street home with Rev. Indiana University offers law scholarships to Goshen high students

Attorney D. J. Troyer announced that two Elkhart county high school students will receive three year law course scholarships at Indiana University Bloomington. Goshen graduates may pursue the LLB degree under this program.

Fort Caswell authorities offer a reward for Charles D. Shelpman of the 102d Coast Artillery who deserted June 11. Animal College trains animals for Gentry Bros United Shows

The city hosts an up to date red brick building educating animals used in Gentry Bros shows. Students complete courses and join the show program. This season the arena expands to twice its former size with performances on Thursday July 24 at Seventh and Douglas streets. Admission is 25 and 35 cents.
