Official Moscow statement says Soviet troops occupied Minsk on July 11. city is capital of the Soviet government and located about 250 miles northeast of Warsaw on the Beresina river. Polish forces are reported to have 1,000,000 men but lack rifles and other equipment.
The Spa dispatch reports Allies pressed the Soviet government for an armistice with Poland and Poland’s pledge to renounce imperialistic aims. Poland could field up to one million troops and requires rifles guns and tanks to proceed within about 15 days if the Soviets delay. The Polish premier’s party travels to Warsaw with Allied assurances.
American relief officials report continued aid to destitute despite withdrawals near battle lines. Bolshevik organizers claim control of areas. $5,000,000 in supplies remain on hand and feeding 1,100,000 people daily continues. Two hundred thousand children now lie within danger zones under Soviet control.
Paris reports 8,000,000 bottles of Baron De Mumm champagne slated for sale on July 28 as part of sequestered assets of Baron Walter De Mum. The property, seized in 1915 after he resumed German citizenship at the outbreak of war, will be auctioned.
Luther Blender of Goshen, 32, faces arson charges for the Philliker Brothers cooperage fire. He is free on $500 bond through his employers Maynard Brothers. Blender has a history of fires and reform school time, with ongoing claims of wrongful accusation. Separately, Mr. and Mrs. P H Winters of Mishawaka were injured in a Michigan auto crash near Gaylord. Mrs. Winters is unconscious and Mr. Winters has a broken arm.
Washington Supreme Court dismissed injunctive proceedings brought by Charles F. Fairchild of New York, president of the American Constitutional League, to block ratification of the suffrage amendment and test the equal suffrage law. The court found no authority to review state actions on ratification or the amendment’s validity. Fairchild noted an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Paris newspapers debate President Deschanel health with some predicting recovery and others claiming incapacity. Reports of resignation and new president plans appear with concern over his ability to serve.
In London on July 13 the special trades union congress rejected a proposal to use direct action to compel the government to withdraw troops from Ireland and stop manufacturing munitions for Ireland and Russia, marking Labor's stance on the Trist question.
In Scranton Pa the anthracite coal operators present their first formal reply to the nine workers wage and condition demands before the coal commission. They reaffirm the right to work without union membership and oppose the closed shop and check off while arguing current wages keep pace with living costs.
Louis PD reports Buck, sheriff of St. Joseph County, believes the arrests of Arlon Riggle and Guy Pinkerton in connection with the Daniels Motor Supply Co robbery at Elkhart open the path to a statewide gang organized for motor accessory theft. Riggle is said to be the son of an Akron clergyman. Both men were married and living in Elkhart before arrest.
In New York on July 13, the Citizens Prosperportation committee warned of legal moves to enjoin deep sea longshoremen from discriminating against goods moved by non union trucks. The warning came after a strike of 1090 longshoremen and Oriental Navigation company refusal to reject goods hauled by non union trucks.
Nan Russell a widow about sixty years old died after a cow trampled her at the home of her son Frank Russell in Stockwell this morning.
Cypher, who compiled the latest city directory for Elkhart, announced yesterday that the next book will be issued in 1922 and will also include a directory for Goshen city.
Ora J. Davies of Kokomo, Republican candidate for Indiana treasurer, said in Indianapolis he will not retire from the state ticket. He told friends “only death will take me off the ticket” amid questions after a shortage found in his Howard county treasurer’s office.
Indianapolis reports two brief sessions as committees push reports on governor Goodrich emergency measures. Amid partisan talks a short session is favored though opposition is possible to state coal mine plans and tax bills. Both chambers open today to consider Goodrich package and yesterday’s introductions.
Word has reached relatives in Goshen that Mrs. Eugene Swigart of Cincinnati, summering in Northport Michigan, saw her cottage burn to the ground Saturday despite fire protection. The origin is unknown with the blaze starting about midnight. Mrs. Swigart, formerly of Goshen, will rebuild next year after taking a smaller summer place.
Forecast calls for showers tonight and on Wednesday with unsettled skies. Temperatures are expected to stay mild as a low-pressure system moves through the area.
The Allied prime ministers defer the German reply on coal delivery terms to tomorrow after re examining the situation. Originated demands ranged from 2.2 million tons monthly to a German offer of 1.1 million tons, with Allies pressing 2.0 million tons.
The International Alliance of Bill Posters and Bilighters of the United States and Canada, with about 300 delegates, pledged strong opposition to Joseph Pennell’s plan to tax bill boards out of existence at its New York convention.
Deetie Cohen 50, of Kendallville and formerly of Goshen, died last night in a Waukesha Wisconsin sanitarium after a five week diabetes illness. Funeral arrangements to be announced. services in Goshen Sunday with burial in Sharis Israel cemetery. He leaves Minnie wife two sons Irving and Charles and sisters Mrs Crieger and Sarah Belle Cohen.
Gov J M Cox democratic presidential nominee announces a conference with President Wilson at the White House at 10 30 Sunday morning following a call with Secretary Tumulty. Preservation of lakes is among major problems discussed at La Porte.
The vacation Bible school at the Church of the Brethren Clinton and Fifth streets presents notable speakers. Prof. J. W. Shultz from North Manchester addresses at eight o'clock this evening, followed by Rev. J. M. Blough on furlough from India tomorrow. Dr. Ezra Flora, general Sunday school secretary, lectures Thursday evening.
The Northern Indiana meeting of the Lutheran Brotherhood met at Grace Lutheran Church in Elkhart. Officers were elected with Fred Bement of Goshen as treasurer and Gerhard, field secretary, spoke. District includes South Bend Mishawaka Elkhart Syracuse Napanee Millersburg and Goshen. A picnic date August 25 was set for members and families in Goshen with an anticipated crowd of at least 500.
Despatches from La Paz say Bolivia's government was overthrown and the president and cabinet imprisoned. Washington reports no confirmation from the state department or Bolivian legation by July 13.
Henry Dutch Dalka known as Frenchy is held in the county jail after an early morning arrest by Chief John Rigney in the Sanders Egbert millyard. He caused a disturbance for hours and the liquor seized is believed to be homemade whiskey.
Hartford July 13 The governor received from Joseph Tumulty secretary to President Wilson an acknowledgment of a telegram about the coal situation. The president asks me to acknowledge your message. Coal situation is having earnest attention and a satisfactory solution is hoped soon.
In Chicago on July 13 the 48 conferees yielded to the Labor party on nationalization of banks and credit facilities. A large Non-Partisan League group and single taxers joined labor, with plans to nominate a United New Party candidate. Delegates debated three plank proposals including capital tax, mine nationalization, and Plumb plan railroad control.
Twenty free clinics for venereal disease treatment operate in Tudiana under the bureau of health. The program runs with federal support and local funding from cities and counties. Total funding surpasses 60,000 with federal and state contributions plus local contributions for education and maintenance.
The lower house rejected a resolution for universal suffrage by a vote of 155 to 283. In Gary Indiana, Clifford Sterson, 16, drowned after a fall into the Grand Calumet River and his body was recovered about an hour later.
