The Goshen council on a proposed $6 000 Cunningham lot purchase for a new fire station draws strong opposition. Citizens argue current arrangements suffice, wasteful costs, and urge private hauling contracts instead of a part paid department and a central station.
Bob Hale in jail since a sensational capture near Waterford Monday night will be arraigned before Justice Whisler for bail before the grand jury meets in October. He professes remorse, blames his father in law Henry Cassell, and says he does not seek to kill. He claims to be French Canadian with Indian blood and asks for mercy for his two babies. Local response mixes sympathy with concerns over his reckless act.
Mrs. Margaret Weyrick and her granddaughter Edna Van Ness escaped serious injury when a runaway horse hit their lawn swing at 212 West Citizens Avenue. The horse, from Texas, damaged the swing and had a prior fatal incident in Austin Berkey’s Monday morning report. Ed Chapman kept the reins until the crash. The women were frightened but unhurt aside from minor bruises.
Receipts for the quarter ending June 20 indicate a gain of 737.56 over the same period in 1995. The Goshen postoffice reports business larger than ever, using the rise as a sign of strong local conditions.

A Goshen band led by Rogers will perform at the corner of Main Street and Lincoln Avenue tomorrow evening. The concert program will be announced tomorrow and is made possible through the kindness of the Winona management.

Early morning fire in the basement of Gohn's grocery and jewelry shop in Middlebury drew out the town's volunteers. Firefighters faced access delays of nearly two hours but fought flames with water from two chemical engines. Most stock suffered smoke and water damage. jewelry safe, show cases removed. George A. Briggs of Elkhart, chair of the county central committee, calls a mass Democratic convention for Thursday August 16 in Goshen. The meeting will be held to consider county party matters and nominations.

Born in WalhAlb en Bavaria Germany on February 11 1820 he arrived in the United States in 1839 and moved to South Bend in 1856.
John French a berry picker on the Charles Handy farm was shot and killed in a quarrel over a card game. The assailant, described as Thomas Payne, is missing and the sheriffs are searching the county. The 38 calibre bullet pierced French's left lung and lodged in his back.
Society notes describe a Jolly Trolley Party with Miss Bertha Chapman inviting seventy five friends in Goshen, honoring Miss Hale of Omaha and Miss Willis of Peoria. The Elkhart police arrested Mr and Mrs Leonard Harwood at Lake Shore depot this afternoon and held them for Goshen police. Violette Harwood a 14 year old girl was whipped by her father last Sunday and a warrant for his arrest was sworn out. The girl was being taken out of state to prevent her from testifying. Mrs Leonard Harwood is described as the daughter in law of the accused.
The St Joseph River Valley Interurban reports strong passenger and freight traffic. The first freight car run surpassed several schooners in load and farmers praise the setup as fruit awaiting packing can be loaded near their homes. The line extends from Benton Harbor to Dowagiac via Eau Claire.
The South Bend Tribune notes Mayor Fogarty will enforce speed laws and pledge strict action against violators. It cites widespread speeding in both residential and business districts and urges careful driving citywide.

The 12 year old son of Charles Guernsey was struck in the face by a prematurely exploding cannon firecracker yesterday near Valparaiso and will lose sight in his left eye.
Miss Lena Johnson, a domestic at Mrs. Harry Snell’s home in Elkhart, fell as she alighted from a street car Monday evening. The car was moving at speed and she struck the pavement, suffering cuts and facial bruises.
William Fagin a Notre Dame graduate and former husband of Sadie Harris of South Bend is wanted by Gallipolis Ohio police on a forgery and grand larceny warrant. Allegedly using the name Hargraves he forged Jennie Dunn’s signature on a $200 check. He is employed as a clerk at the Lackawanna Steel Plant in Buffalo NY and will be held until extradition papers arrive. He is accused of leaving behind social turmoil and unpaid debts.

Samuel W Smith husband receives personal property and life estate in the realty for three daughters Stella Wilder Cora E Shattuck and Ona G Garl who must insure their father's support. Benjamin F Swinehart named administrator.

Starbuck will fill behind the plate as a temporary replacement. The crowd was fair and the game featured several pretty plays.
